Priscilla (2023)

Hey, it's your old pal, Slim, and this is 70 millimeter of podcast for film fans just like you with me as always is my close friend and artist Danny Haas hello and our close friend and member of the Memphis Mafia Pertile Xs Every episode is connected to a theme for that month and this time it's new Vember new movies were just new to us. We're continuing things this week with Priscilla from Sofia Coppola and you can use the chapters in your podcast app to skip right to that discussion Casey Haas left her review This week saw Priscilla Silla She wrote told Danny out loud in the theater that Priscilla was the same age as our second daughter Obviously he knows our kids ages, but the fact was hitting me so hard. I had to say it out loud Mm-hmm we'll get into it You People have been asking me I've been getting DMs this week. Oh the big news that dropped Everyone waiting for the big news months in the making What are you talking about? What is it? You see this humane AI pins He's can't I believe you bring here we go Yeah, here we go. Listen these people used to work at Apple. They are releasing this AI pin It attaches to your clothes with magnets You ask a questions. I don't know Pearl. What are your vibes on an AI pin? AI pin leather bracelet not included The first thing I said after seeing this video it's a 10 minute video Yeah, I didn't click on the link revolutionary technology And my first thought was like it's a it's like an Alexa that you wear on your body Because everything I saw in the video This is what my Alexa does We'll get into it in the end cut episode. We don't have to be us around this AI pin. No one knows what that we're talking about it But our DMs were flying Actually, you know, I had to talk about something in our DMs. Oh my gosh We'll get into a Priscilla just around the corner. I was doing some like extensive Priscilla research Here we go today And I'm like looking up photos Priscilla Presley and then I see Priscilla Presley With Leslie Nielsen and I'm like wait a minute She was the lead in the naked gun movies. I had no idea that that was the same Priscilla Presley Hmm, I would I I could I was stunned I couldn't believe that this like news had escaped me for decades and I love those movies Can't believe what I was probably you knew this you you were your student of her acting career. I guess I'm no, I'm sorry. I am not. I did not know this. I've never seen naked gun I couldn't even tell Priscilla Presley from God or Jesus, you know, if they were standing next next to each other I mean, she looked fantastic in the naked gun movies. That's my memory of those films We'll get into it Priscilla right around the corner Um, Dan, did you watch any movies this week that you want to talk about? You know, I watched one that would be considered a big one To I think letterboxed folks. Yeah Cine files we watched the first of the before trilogy We watched before sunrise with wow And well, I know Ethan Hawks name. I honestly can't remember the other female leader Presley it's presley Julie Depp Delpy Yes, nailed it um I gave it four stars. I had an amazing time watching this film It um, I'm really looking forward to finishing the trilogy, but I honestly I honestly thought it was gonna be a little bit more um Like sappy or love story. I'm not sure why I thought that maybe the time it was made, but I was really kind of enamored with the long conversations that they have in this film and I just really enjoyed it I could I felt like it could sit there and listen to them talk forever. What should you basically do in this film Um, there was like a long bus ride that I really enjoyed the conversation and then playing pinball and You know, I just I just kind of I like these long conversation films. I think it's why I fell in love with um My dinner for Andre when I watched it a couple years ago for this pod and I don't know. This was a really fun movie. It was fun. It I guess is not the right word. I just really enjoyed it I'm sorry because you watched this right. I thought that this would have been on borderline Potential picked on the line that maybe you think so. I thought I would have picked this. I mean, we'll get to it at some point Yeah, what made you watch it? Is that a promise? What did I watch this? I think We were trying to find something to watch that night And I was honestly on letterbox looking up like fall Vibe movies So we really come up with nothing in case you I think just picked it out of the blue um So we just picked it starting the trilogy. I don't know if we'll keep going anytime soon, but We watched the first one. Ethan hawk is so young in this. Yeah. It's a baby baby hawk Per if you were learning to fly you watched this before No, I've never seen those uh never yeah never cross my my path Wow Before is it the is out they call it the before trilogy the before trilogy. Yeah, before sunset before sunrise Before midnight. I think not in that order. I think I just a big investment to start a trilogy at this point in my life He just wrapping up. Yeah, you're wrapping up the AI journey. You need to really think about what you spend your time with I mean we should also talk about how part of went to the movie theater twice in two weeks again Like this is and you posted a photo of your local theater in the discord and I mean, it looks it does look like a ghost town Do you want to dox what theater that is? I don't know. We don't want to jeopardize any partnerships Eventually, they have seen the future award neo philadelphia They were still showing asteroid city on like the main Thing of the top of the theater the banner outside of the theaters. It said coming June 28 And for the record it's November now if anyone's listening from the future The it guy got maybe fired a couple of months ago. No one knows how to log into that windows computer to change the posters from Rosé Proto, what did you watch anything worth mentioning? I Was able to watch a movie that's been on my watch list now and not that my AFI journey Is on hold until we cover raging bull. I was looking at my watch list. It's like where do I go from here? You know I've watched every important American movie Where do I go from here Uh, so I saw that the movie sorry to bother you From 2018 was on amazon prime and I remember when this came out there was like a lot of hype around it But then I kind of like disappeared and people haven't really talked about it again But I've had on my watch list because people said it's kind of weird You know, it seemed like a kind of a cool surreal movie people were like, oh, you're just like, wait Do you get what do you see the thing that happens while um And it is kind of out there It's I would say this is like a surreal dark comedy maybe is like what I would say it kept I kept thinking uh It's like a mixture Of like a David Lynch movie and like maybe Judd Apatow or something. I don't know It's very it's very strange. It was a little too surreal for me I think like I like I think I like my movies a little bit more grounded. This gets pretty way out there but um It has like a some interesting like social commentary Um, and then lequith stanfields in this he's the guy who is in get out Uh, not the lead, but he's like the one to mention. Oh, yeah, he was just an honor mansion Uh, he has a pretty he has a good amount of cool movies. Uh, he's great in this Tessa Thompson's in it as well. They're both great. Um, it's got a lot of style and it's just really funny So I gave it four stars. I had a good time. Oh nice. Okay. I also saw you find a log tomboy Oh, yeah What made you come across the fact that you forgot to log that three months ago Oh, well, I was looking at my watch list and Tom was still in there. Yeah, so it was like, oh, okay, I forgot see that's That's the importance of a watch list. It serves many purposes one of which is when you forget you've watched a movie Right there true true Uh, we have some new patrons to say hello to bridge your chev and lee all joined this week at patreon.com slash 70 mm. They got access to the vhs field discord Uh, discounts on dany's prince cold war episode was out and about and what's next blue valentine I think is our next episode that'll just be for patrons and then the mailback. So this is a reminder too We do a yearly mailbag episode in December Or post in December, but I think we're recording it after our Napoleon episode. So folks When I send in a letter that is completely off topic or anything it'll just be for supporters. That'll be recorded soon Also, you log Tommy boy. Oh my god. Yeah I mean also for the chance you log tomboy and Tommy boy in the same week Yeah, freaky, right? Back to back lot, but you I didn't even see a heart or a star rating on Tommy boy though You know what the reason this was on my mind is our our dear producer Dale He just watched this and he gave it five stars. Let me just look at his let me just give look at his review warranted in my Yeah, I mean he was saying he's reminiscing on watching this as a 14 year old It awakening something in him. Oh god, you know He said he couldn't hide the delight on his face as a repeated word for word the script for the whole my gosh I mean that's deep love And I love Dale. So I was like, I mean, let me get in there. See what's going on. Yeah close this humane AI pin tab And let me find out Tommy boy I'm making the Tommy boy and I think it might be my first Chris Farley movie Interesting, I don't wait you've never seen it. Yeah, I haven't seen Tommy boy. So I mean, oh, let's just say it didn't really work for me Uh, I'm kind of upset that this is on the the VHS village top 100 movies of all time even if it's the 100s movie Like we knew we need to do an audit or something. I mean, we're gonna recast our votes I think this upcoming year and we'll you know, we'll set the record straight. We'll set some ground rules But that you've said it it could jump it's gonna go higher probably black sheep. Maybe we'll replace it enough. Oh, I have veto power I demand veto power I love Tommy boy grown up Tommy boy was one of those movies that was a formative goofy comedy I'm trying to see when dirty work came out with normic Donald goodness my god dirty work changed my life when that movie came out 1998 No, is Tom even seen with um does he is at the the hotel made seat Where she's trying to she's or it's David spades at the door pretending to be the Daily chat says yes, God what a seed Chris getting frustrated I got a lot of stuff like you do like a triple threat of Tommy boy black sheep and then rounded out with dirty work directed by Bob Sagitt too The king the king the goat Extremely go to Bob Sagitt all right. It's time for Tommy boy maybe Every week we also give out a free year letterboxed patron gets uh, let's see what episode what days is coming out Just reminder to at the letterbox sale the annual letterbox sale is where I corner I think when this post on Monday It's actually starting sooner. We're starting it a few weeks early and you could 20% off Pro or patron so any who you get a backdrop on your account you can see where your movies and your watchlist are streaming This week's winner Believe it or not. It's our old friend kev What what Extending his patron status that let's review for Priscilla four and a half stars for Priscilla Great movie and all but you're telling me that Priscilla Presley never met the colonel never spoke to him They're past never crossed am I supposed to believe this no colonel in Priscilla. Thank God Who is the The colonel the colonel get colonel Tom Parker out of here This sounds like this is Kev is letting his love of another movie influence possibly This is so fiat He's being self-kev influenced somehow in his reviews. I also want to point out like We don't talk about it a ton But there are so many podcasts to that jumped out in the last few years You know from our discord kev host one of those co-host one of those with Kenzo Austin danger pod But there's also a criterion connection movie mixtape 1978 Josh real Latinos the needle drops. There's so many podcasts Um in our community that are worth listening to I don't know if there's a website I'm not sure if these crew has like unionized and has a website um Trainor in chat is saying wow trainer has how many episodes is trainer's podcast post in the last Six months trainer has a podcast Uh god trainer is not even answering the question. He's like he refuses to answer my question about when the last episode was posted So anyway If you're looking for some other podcasts, there's a great group in our community Join our discord find some new podcasts. Listen to if you get tired to listen to us joke around goofballs Oh, what did I watch? Yeah, what did you watch It's gotta be something I continued my chucky cinematic journey. Yeah, I didn't that end well I don't know it didn't end well but bride of chuckies was actually really good It was hilarious actually. I was shocked chucky and Jennifer Tilly Jennifer Tilly looks incredible in bride of chucky. I love Jennifer Tilly Uh Jennifer Tilly is like a former lover of chuckies human form And she tracks that yet she tracks down the doll She tried you know, she's you know, maybe still got the hots for Chuckie even though he's a doll Eventually she gets turned into a doll using the voodoo magic So now you have a chubby Yeah, and then you have Jennifer Tilly as a adorable little doll people And they have like a scheme to get human bodies. So they're it's it's like a buddy comedy Horror I don't know it's so hard to explain but it was I gave it four stars Um my review I wrote chucky smokes of dube in the back of a fan and eventually gets laid pumping his little doll body his heart So then I watched uh, this is all on to be it's like to to be just Auto plays and continues Then I tried to watch seed of chucky where they have kids you know, they have a child Um, and I fell asleep during half of it And eventually there's like some really fourth wall stuff that breaks like Jennifer Tilly is in the movie as herself They're filming like a chucky movie and she's in it But then also the doll version of her what does also in it um, so I will I wake up At one point they're falling asleep and Jennifer Tilly is pregnant Human Jennifer Tilly and I was like wait did chucky have sex with human Jennifer Tilly I mean So then I made it just dead pans. No, it was a turkey bater. He went off into a cup. You shouldn't have fallen asleep. She said So I did not rewind it um, I did not rate that one. I had to give that one a rewatch So there's apparently two more after this that are more modern But she literally says she needed to break and we will not be continuing in the near future Together, I needed a break Right to the next October. She doesn't want to explain chucky to you anymore. No, she knows what's gonna happen. Bless her heart Um, I also watched fall of the house of usher that Netflix show from um Mm-hmm Mike Flanagan Who I I think I called Mike scam again when I watched a midnight mass. I was so annoyed with it But followed the house thus fall of the house of usher was was okay. I liked it Say it's like another eight episode show, you know You know how they how they do Like a master of horror Kirby suggests The jury is out Should we get into our movie Priscilla I think it's time Priscilla 2023 Newviember This was announced weeks ago Go see it in theaters part of what is this movie What happens when you fall into the orbit of a star Priscilla falls into Elvis Presley in 1959 and doesn't come out until 1973 She is a freshman in high school and has the chance to meet the king of rock and roll With an encounter Elvis I Has turned towards her and her whole world has been lifted into the clouds and left her in a dream Where she has his heart And she chooses to live in his orbit and to find out what it means to love and be loved Priscilla I do have to cause you a portal record a UFO for interns Is pre and post movie thoughts and there were some real banger Elvis impressions Mainly just grumbles I think he I think the thing is is he found a way to speak without using his tongue Like if you just try to talk without moving your tongue you're halfway there Oh I couldn't even say I was trying to keep my tongue motionless Are you dandy now you try? No My goodness gracious I my backstory with Priscilla Presley obviously you heard of the top show I have no knowledge of her I didn't even know that she was the lead actress in three of my favorite movies the naked gun Trilogy Um, I also don't even really know anything about Elvis Yeah, we you know, I said we would never release our DMs But I will say that there were conversations about me watching live Delta yet Delvis live Elvis concerts And you know the the one that they show in the movie the one where he's wearing the leather This is 73 aloha show and then his final show So I was kind of just mainlining those shows today Part of what about you? What's your what's your history with Priscilla Presley and And her husband? No history with Priscilla uh, I feel like I probably Saw and heard more about Lisa Marie Presley than anyone else. Oh, yeah, I'll rip with her. Yeah, and did Yeah, Elvis Presley his performance. Yeah, like watching these these clips um That have you guys seen this guy before has anyone watched Elvis before he's incredible. He is incredible Uh, which I feel like this added to the movie. I you know, I watch the clips after Um, but just watching the movie and then coming and seeing him perform and seeing like what kind of Yeah, performer he was uh It adds to it while also I feel like the movie does a good job of communicating just how big Elvis was at the time Yeah, Masha's asking you have any of us seen Bos Lerman's Elvis the answer is no, I have not seen it. I refuse. I did need to take a break It was getting too heated the eye around that movie I yeah, you probably some repress like you know, you're right. I think our upbringing at least our age Her mic was acting her uh, yeah, Lisa Marie Presley with Michael Jackson I remember when MTV dropped that music video with the two of them and nobody thought This would last I mean people need to google that moment from the ncv awards or they They make out on stage I'm very happy to be here And just think nobody thought this would last Yeah, you talk about a formative moment kind of the man seeing Michael Jackson make out at least a more But I thought this would last I mean look at the clip. It's nuts Danny you've you've alluded to it in previous episodes But you do have a connection to the king. I mean, I feel like ever since I could listen to music My dad was playing Elvis. We listened to so much Elvis growing up I like I've formerly I like I remember like driving His old like dodge ram This brown dodge ram. He had no seat belts. We could crawl crawl on the seats wherever we want And he would just be putting in these cassette tapes of Elvis And we've listened to Elvis so much. I have like old ticket stubs from when my dad saw them Live here in Orlando whenever they came to Florida so many stubs um, but I didn't really know Priscilla Outside of kind of like the public knowledge of her so like this story is like all brand new Yeah, I think we knew I think I knew way more about Lisa Marie than Priscilla, but Yeah, in my household Elvis was king. I mean, we I mean, I just we've always known about Elvis my entire life We've watched his movies. I mean, I've seen these movies that he did My dad would play those. I think we used I think he's still I think there's VHS somewhere, but Yeah, Elvis was it in our house Lindsay in chat says Jacob the Lordy's Elvis voice was way more palatable than awesome butlers I thought Jacob did like an unreal job Um as Elvis which we'll get into right on the corner. We'll get into a chill Um, but this is based on Priscilla's book, right? It's like El Priscilla and Elvis and there was a TV movie I think in the 80s that was done also of the book I wish I had known that sooner and then we come up wanted to track that down and watch it to see what kind of differences there were So we'll go around the room round table style We jot down some notes when we watch these movies and then we'll end things with our letterboxed rating We probably have to start with Danny. I feel like given the history of the king But also learning a lot about Priscilla the the star and real human being It's weird. I don't know where to start because I think the most shocking thing for me about learning about Elvis and Priscilla um Well, a learning about all of Priscilla's kind of storyline but to know the age gap. I know Casey's review set at the top of the hour I had no idea that this I had no I knew there was an age gap. I didn't know that it started with her as a freshman in high school while they were stationed in Germany um And Elvis was quite older than her like 10 years older than her. It was very It was a very Interesting way to start the movie and I know it's how the story starts But it also kind of puts a lot of this story into perspective on how It's predatory all I mean it's it's gonna be how that her story kind of continues on how he's treating her and I was really just kind of shocked by It's um But then also as a story unfolds on how Elvis treats her um I mean sexually how he you know keeps her at bay until they're married. It's very it's not I mean weird isn't the right word because Obviously their age gap makes the makes it all weird, but I don't know he he was just very awkward I don't know of Elvis being weird like this. I think that was like I think that's a way that caught me the most off guard like him reading The bible and the stuff to her and bed like Elvis came off like such a creep and a weirdo in this movie Um, and it was just so off-putting so much of Elvis's scenes like I kind of expected it on some level of just being like an a-hole husband But just being just it was just like a plus creep the whole time for me Yeah, 90s they met in 1959. She's 14. He's 24 Yeah in Germany when he was there for military service. Yeah, he was drafted in the army in 57 Part of your thoughts Yeah, I think that's that's one of the more interesting things about this movie is how It's so focused on Priscilla that there's this huge star of Elvis in this But all of those things that make this relationship so bizarre And how it how it how they meet how it develops how they relate to each other You don't get like a full picture of Elvis like it's really you're seeing like this one side of where he's just with her And like why does he do this why does he control their relationship in this way Why is he yeah, why is he just the way he is with her and like what were her his motives and goals and like did he plan this all along Is he just like a super weirdo in these these ways was this all part of like a bigger plot like there's so many things that I I'm curious as to why it was this the way their relationship That they don't it doesn't really delve into um Either as like his motives in those terms, but also It's very like guarded too and I feel like in terms of how Priscilla was responding to this stuff too big time So it's it's it's almost like you're kind of shut off to both of them and it's very clear that Priscilla is She's like sucked into this and doesn't know what to do And I think that's the main thing like that is well communicated that she is like way in over her head And she doesn't like she almost doesn't understand what her life is And you're kind of lost there with her Yeah, I think in your UFO He even said that you didn't realize that Elvis was In the movie so much and I thought the same thing and I don't know why Maybe it's just the lack of knowledge that I didn't realize that like The whole thing was gonna be the two of them and the book is called Elvis and me. I just had to confirm So I guess you know the majority of it is their relationship And you're right there is that kind of like weird lack of Depth into their thinking and they're like emotional state And I guess that really is probably what I guess I don't guess but Probably on purpose Because you're really just supposed to just have these scenes play out and they do play out in like You know someone in a previous review and our community said it was like a lot of vignettes You know, and you're just kind of left to pick up the pieces yourself and infer what they're thinking Um, which is a very interesting choice for this film. I thought A lot of it made me feel like we were supposed to be Kind of reacting how Priscilla would react in these moments like we're confused as well We're kind of star struck by Elvis as well And you know all these weird scenes like she's kind of like having to struggle with them on the spot the same way we kind of are It's like I think we're meant to feel awful for most of it for most of these odd scenes And Kaylee's amazing Yeah, she's great actually yeah, she was like she played the role so well when she was the 14-year-old version Priscilla's like is there a second actor in the movie? Yeah, she's the young in Priscilla because she does Fit the role so well Yeah, and like even the The parents I guess at first were like We don't want you going over this party But then we don't want you hanging out with him then we don't want you going to visit him I mean, I don't know was 1950 something or whatever like what was What's the general consensus at that time? It's different right like maybe it was Copacetic in a way. I don't know Yeah, well this that's actually kind of my first point is that It might have been like accepted But I think the other thing is that it's also Elvis Yeah, like he's this international star, and it's like here's your you know Elvis Presley even though he is like a rock and roll star. It's like He wants to spend time with your daughter And she wants to see him and you have like this Broken relationship but well, it's like it feels like your relationship is breaking with your daughter as you move to Germany She has away from her whole life And that's I feel like that her Going to Elvis. It's like it's very tragic in the way that it's outside of her control I feel like it's outside of anybody. It's outside of her parents control It's outside of her control that she'd fall in love with him like he is the heartthrob of the globe And he has his eyes turned towards her there's like she's she's hopeless like there's no way She's not falling in love with him like it's completely outside of her control And I felt like that was so well communicated at the beginning of this movie of like She goes to his house in Germany like three different times And those scenes of her like back in school like you can just see on her face like she is head over heels Insnared by this guy like so in love like she there's no escape for her Um, and I just thought that I thought that was really well done Yeah, one of my notes was if you see him play in front of you at a party and talk to you You're 14. Yes. How does your life not Immediately change forever from that moment on yeah And like eventually get invited to his room too like there's just I like I'm I was starting to think of like you know the you read those stories of teachers having relations with students Like the woman there's so many like when we grew up about like the the female teacher who had a relationship with a young boy in school And then she goes to prison but like the relationship continues after she comes out of prison You know like I was thinking of that too like There's no way she's not going to become infatuated with him and it's almost like you're creating that relationship By force and she's just gonna be stuck with it because she doesn't know anything better. You know I mean when Jacob sat down at the piano on that scene I was about to throw my panties at the start Yeah, that was an excuse me. Those are your quarter royale shorts Boy, uh, we've actually hit like all of my main points already First 10 minutes I do want to talk more about Elvis just kind of being weird. So it's it's like my lack of Elvis knowledge, but I kind of didn't put two and two together But like when he's in the army and trying to like come out of it his like career starts to hit a low um, and then he goes through these various phases like he's reading the bible at a certain point He's getting into like, you know spiritualism He goes through like these various phases and I did go to read a little bit about her book It talks about how he's tried different things To like get back in the swing of things and like she really was turned off by the spiritualism stuff They tried LSD together, which we see in the movie. Oh, what a scene amazing scene And I don't know they just made me Curious and it like I just felt so disconnected to his outbursts But then at the same time like oh, I guess maybe that's supposed to be how persilo felt in those moments Like when he throws the chair When she gives him feedback about the song. I don't know. Elvis. What are you doing? I didn't make any sense to me in that moment. You asked Yeah, he asked for the feedback Yeah, and then when they're when they have that amazing scene where they spend like three days together in bed or whatever Um, and they're they're playing around with the pillows And then he freaks out about getting to hit with a pillow. They just all seem so weird When he freaked out, but I guess that was on purpose because you're supposed to be in persilo shoes. I don't know Yeah, I think so for sure You're kind of as lost as she is in those moments And I feel like that's like more the point of it is not like This isn't like a turning point in the relationship It's not saying anything about the relationship. It's just like communicating How how confusing it was for her to be with this guy who Uh, you know, is this you know larger than lifestyle But then he has like this life with her But it's separate between those. I mean the way that she felt Almost like in prisoned in Graceland, you know, and like almost like he wouldn't let her leave. Yeah, they're most of it Because he was cheating on her the whole time, right? They made it seem kind of vague in the film, but it was pretty legit that he was having affairs with the other women But it was almost like nebulous in his explanations where Hopefully persilo would just kind of know that I'm going to be connected with these women read that however you want And it's just gonna happen Danny number two Hmm Number two, um, I thought this movie was stunning. I think it was a beautifully shot film I there were so many scenes that I just I loved how long they just kind of sat and quiet the scenes of um Priscilla in Graceland The lighting in those scenes are incredible the the set design of Graceland looks so good It felt so timeless because I know it doesn't look like that Uh, anymore. It's crazy that they even just kind of built their own kind of Graceland Um The there's a great montage in the very beginning when she's kind of when Elvis is away and she's counting like the days of seeing him again just the Gorgeously shot scenes and I just couldn't get over how beautiful this film was when they go to Vegas I'm like oh my god if I could time travel I'm going back to 60 70s Vegas like I want to see Like that's it's it's it's it was incredible. It looked like they used like Stock 4k footage of Vegas or something because it it looked like they just blew up so a film reel of Vegas at that time and looked great I think they had to have done right that was stunning. Yeah, that was yeah, there's just so much this film was beautiful and I mean, no, I don't have not seen any other couple of movies or Sophia Copeland movies and I just I feel like I have to dig in but this one. It's just beautiful Copeland journey We should do a couple of month That'd be fun. Yeah Yeah, the cinematographer was AJ Young and I think Tamara Devaro was a production designer. I watched a quick like the Not sure if it was wired or vogue or something But they had Sophia and the two leads kind of watch a scene and break it down and it was that scene where he's reviewing the demos and Sophia paused it and like circled the screen just of the photos in that room like they made all the fake photos of The actor What's his name? I wrote it down. Sorry Jacob as Elvis like with an actor who was playing his mom. They had the fake old records in there Yeah, it's just so cool to think about like all the details that went into just that room That really you're not seeing but it's in the backdrop So the production design was aces. I thought about that when they start showing Elvis on tour again and they start like pacing up the posters and the vinyls and it's all photos of Jacob instead of actual like yeah, Elvis material and I thought man what a gig like I would have loved to have been like Getting to create these fake Elvis for posters with Jacob. What about what a fun gig that would have been yeah I also like I think they didn't get the rights to use any Elvis music either in the film Um, I'm gonna talk about music in a second. Yeah, but I like that Like I liked the music that was done in the film creating its own vibe. I like that they didn't have to lean on that And like complete expectation, you know, yeah, I think it worked really well the the music selection Puerto next on your list um The other aspect of the relationship there there there's there's there's sexual relationship Which is like a pretty big part of this movie and it's There's so many things that happen in this movie that just feel The opposite of like what you expect but in the same way feel as like terrible like her You know, she falls for him she's in Germany Her Her parents agree to allow her to go live on Graceland with Elvis Presley to finish school And she gets there and she's like, yeah, the Finch High School and she's just like moves into his bedroom It's like here's my you know 16 17 year old daughter or whatever moving into Elvis's bedroom ready to get it on with him Right there is ready. Yeah, she's totally ready and he turns her down and then he turns her down Until they get married. I don't know how long that I guess she was 21 Oh my gosh, so that was like four more years Of this turning her down. Wow Like I don't even know What is like what is his like what is he doing? Yeah other than control right like cheating on her I mean Priscilla is in absolute Fox Yeah, in like in at this point of her life I mean for most of her life she's Fox all of her life But at this time your Elvis you're like, okay, we can't baby Can't get into the temptation. We can't what he even says like if we give in If we overcome this temptation We can overcome anything he has like a few lines That are just so wild and like you know To I guess his credit at the time too when she was even younger They like kiss once and he's and I think she even says in her book that he was kind of like a gentleman As as much as you can be and for until they got married which you're right Like I can't believe that that ended up being the case And I almost want to think that it was almost Sincere of him where he's like all right. Well, I sleep with these other women, but she's gonna be my wife You know, yeah, and that's different with her and maybe he even told himself that But the way it plays out it ultimately feels especially like towards the end of it when he almost like when he trusted like Reaper at the end Then you're like, oh my god. This is like the opposite of the beginning of the movie Yeah, Ed points out in the book they were doing other stuff though So this actually I pulled from the wiki of the book because it cracked me out quote the couple kissed and engaged in pitting But Elvis always stopped the make-out sessions before it led to actual intercourse Anyone use the word petting In out loud to just to describe that kind of stuff maybe in the last 20 years 25-30 years Heavy petting I remember hearing the phrase heavy petting in high school And I was like what is that Oh Nobody news if you want to google out in cognit mode first and foremost um Danny number three. Oh man, we're back around um I want to talk about my favorite um Needle drop of the film Uh dolly pardons. I will always love you at the end is an absolute banger of a choice for this film because um that song dolly originally wrote um Uh four out she she partially wrote the song for Elvis himself And uh there was a time when she went to Record the song with Elvis in the studio and uh uh The kernel Wanted to take all the rights He said he told her Elvis doesn't record Uh without the rights to all the songs and so he wanted Either half the rights or all the rights or the song doesn't get recorded and dolly said no And she kept the rights that I will always love you which is an absolute banger of a song But she turned them down, but for Sophia to use this At the end when she's leaving Elvis There's a very choice uh Music Uh bit and I was like I mean it was a flooring it floored me at the in the in the moment But then finding out the reason uh she picked the song is pretty powerful. Wow Yeah, we were talking about Somewhere someone linked to the Elvis A performance of unchained melody Oh my god And during I think that was his last show right his last live show in 1977 I mean you talk about chilled up That's that that that forms as a banger Holy cow. I came out of the theater because we were We're DMing like right before my show started and you sent that and then I didn't watch it until I got in the car I was sobbing In my car Watching this video and then I said hope after did her I was like Jenny you gotta watch this So I pulled it up on my phone and I just put it on the countertop and we just stood there watching it I was behind her and I started crying again This is like That I don't know whatever I all this had Is something friggin else like it you can feel it On your phone watching it whatever he had it is unbelievable Oh My love My darling I hungry for your touch Oh Time Goes by So slowly I mean, it's fine because we were I can't remember Danny linked to that video and there's like you know never before seen banter before on chain melody So Elvis is like bantering back and forth with this guy is gonna hold his mic form And I think we all hit play the same time so like when Elvis like start singing out of nowhere We're all like oh my god. Holy shit like it's an amazing performance So he looks like he's about to fall into a coma And then he still got it. He still has it when he needs it Ah boy the one thing to watching all these performances Um Man the amount of flash photography in these shows That is gone in like modern day. It looks so cool rewatching some of the footage of the audience the flashes going off Pro wrestling is the same way There's just something about seeing all those lights go off in the stands that it's just not something that is happening ever again Which kind of sucks Proto final point um Yeah, we kind of hit all mine. Oh, well, I could talk about my theater experience So I wasn't sure Talk to what was happening at first I thought that like are they're in Germany um Maybe there's something about Her life and like it be being in a pressure cooker the start of this because The screen of my theater kept vibrating like there was a bomb going off I'm not even joking It was it was like it sounded like very distant like a like a like it was sound like a nuke was going off in Germany And I thought that might be happy like were they testing nuke's in Germany while For silla Pressley's family was stationed there Turns out my theater was right next to the i max feeling of Uh the marvels movie That was Bri Larson and friends next to you because I yeah, I'm like All right, it's now go there was like a part where the screen went blank and there was like nothing and then the screen vibrated I was like okay, this is not part of the movie. I am sure now I mean I left and then when I left the theater I'm walking out Like I can feel it vibrating the floor of the the aisle um my god So that went on the whole runtime of my cheese But I felt like it kind of maybe Elevated it some because I thought it was just part of the show for a while there The vibration could be in metaphor for heavy petting in those things exactly I can't believe that theater has an i max screen judging from the parking lot situation It has two i max and a doldy, so What the theater yes dang okay Oh, okay, okay, you take the go with the bad Yeah, um my final point We covered everything, but I think I was mainly shocked also I mean, there's many shocking things about the relationship Um Was the height difference between the two I mean Jacob is like nine feet tall She is like four foot And that adds like another layer just into the age difference early on in the film But also just you know the the power dynamic obviously Um, but I did really like Jacob as Elvis and I know there's like a meme about The other actor that played Elvis in the other movie, but I don't know there's something I he even talks about it in that video that I alluded to He said his like regular voice level is closer to Elvis's as well, so it kind of made it easier for him To kind of play the role and get to those certain conversations, which I thought was fascinating Um, I all the other video I watched was I guess this was a video from Vogue in anticipation of the Lerman film But it was Priscilla going through the decades of like her style Oh, yeah, the camera is above her and then in front of her, but she's opening up this beautiful kind of photo album And it's like a photo of her saying goodbye to Elvis in Germany that first time like when he leaves for good And she's taught and she's smiling She's like, yeah, I remember this moment, you know, he told me not to shed any tears So you can see this photo that I'm smiling and that I'm trying to like hold back everything and it's turns page It's like you know the wedding Um, the photo of their of them and Lisa Marie like all the various styles through the year. I thought it was an amazing 10 minute video So track that down too Yeah, in terms of her style the one Where she uh, it was sort of the end where Elvis is like going on his tour I think it's like after her 68 come back Uh, and it's like they're they're kind of mourned to like get into like the 70 style and her hair looked like a modern a modern haircut Because she goes from like that higher the beehive. Yeah, it was like flat. She looked like um You what's her face? No, the British princess um from America Kate I know the other one Kate wins a lit. No, the the X princess the X princess is Megan's dying. That's who it is. Yes Yeah, sure, my name is Megan It's crazy to watching his comeback special and then The 73 special. I mean fashion has changed so much and so fast in between those two specials It's nuts. It's nuts to go through those videos Uh, Danny honorable mentions. I don't read Um Honorable mentions. I loved I loved the pool parties, but I loved when they're at the jukebox and he makes that jab at the Beatles. Oh, yeah Samarica I wouldn't play them um I have I think I am just I'm at four and a half stars for this It doesn't hit five for me because I didn't I didn't love the ending I didn't kind of like how it kind of ended of her driving away. I understand it, but I Honestly wanted to see her process Elvis's death a little bit. I thought we were going to get there because I felt this movie flew by In my opinion for what it was runtime, but I thought we're going to get a little closer to his death maybe um But I didn't enjoy how it ended, but I really loved this film. I'm at four and a half stars for only some moaks Was it ever in doubt? You know for the king my first copula you never know the queen Elvis is the lead fertile Uh Yeah, I agree Danny with the um the ending. It doesn't you know, it doesn't have like a typical story arc the way it It develops like when you think of uh, I don't know like a story about someone's life in this way It usually you know has more like key moments that you can track the story and they're they try to end it with some kind of You know climactic Turn or something a revelation, but I did like how this just felt more of like a slice of just her life with Elvis And this period and just showing it from a certain perspective it kind of reminded me of the um The Steve Jobs movie Where it was just like towards that one period of his life was that Michael fastbender in that Ashton kutcher no not the ashton kutcher one the ashton kutcher one tries to show his whole life and it stinks The the fastbender one I think it's like it's just like one period of his life So kind of reminded me of of that in the way it told the story But it did feel like you're getting towards the end. It felt like it was running out of runway It was like uh the movie's almost over and it seems like we're not totally somewhere So this movie definitely to me feels more like riding a vibe than having a you know that uh That resolution that you you're used to in a movie Mm-hmm I also really Connected with just like her parents struggling what to do man. I don't know what what I don't know what to do I bet her dad going out with her too. Remember he flies from Germany to there. It's crazy. But just seeing your daughter You know this oh man. I I don't know it's different times. Yeah It's crazy to think of being in that that moment and like what do you do because then you think Maybe he should maybe they should have protected her told her no not let it happen, but then I mean she tells them she's gonna go either way Yeah, but I mean even like before the first date like if they said no Absolutely not under no circumstances Then you just wonder like what if you know Yeah, also like I mean it's Elvis What if she just falls into like a deep depression for years he becomes an even bigger star I mean the amount of like resentment. Yeah, that she would have towards her parents for the rest of her life. Maybe I could have been his wife Sure could have been hanging out alone for most of my life at grace would ever he lose bracelet I love the font of the opening credits Oh really just yeah nice font choice Um yeah her falling in love is just magic at the beginning I thought that was so well shot Him giving her the gun. Oh, yeah, what a moment. Yeah, all of her different matching ones or addresses Yeah Kind of wanted to shoot a gun after seeing this I feel like I could shoot maybe I could shoot one of hers whatever she had those little pea shooters mm-hmm cut that out Oh How about her graduation then she comes out to him getting pictures with the nuns. Oh my god That was amazing. They'll have their guns out too. So funny. He's so charismatic like ah good Like yeah, the Jacob a Lordy or whatever. He did so good in this. He was so believable I like I just thought he was Elvis while watching this and I think that's that's probably the highest compliment you give somebody um Oh His jewelry game was crazy that ring fish between the bracelets the watches the rings the gifts he's giving her Yeah in that um Priscilla Vogue video they showed aside by side of the family photo But it was like the Austin Butler version and I just like was thinking after seeing this I was like there's almost no visual comparison between these two actors Like Jacob is Elvis and it's it felt so weird seeing Austin Butler in those photos With like slick back hair and it's like that doesn't work Spirit Halloween Elvis true the scene where Elvis calls Priscilla into the room is like I think we should spend some time apart The woman in front of me she she whispered under her breath bastard But that was the only people out of them the whole movie so I'll take it um Yeah Yeah, that that final scene with them in the hotel room of him like completely strung out Um man, that was rough Um this movie is like confusing to know how to feel but I feel like that was its goal because it's confusing for Priscilla obviously Um, I almost can't get over that this is like a real life seeing them Like going out on a buying trip together He's got his posse with them like the paparazzi falling on the round they look like a million bucks in their clothes It's just Whatever like this life that they lived is it's just something else um, I had a great time watching this. I'm at four stars Oh goodness holy cow Okay Elvis died when he was 42 years old people 42 Let let that sink in TM TM okay I still can't get over that Um before I saw this movie I saw trailer for Beyoncé Documentary of like her tour and it looks Fire I need to see this movie to be honest. It looked amazing the way it was shot You know the production of her tour. I'm not sure if anyone else listens to shows Beyoncé fan I need to talk to people already I need to learn About it's like I guess it's called the Renaissance tour. I don't know you need to learn. I might be using my MC stubs join the bees see that The rug to open the movie. I made a note that looks super comfy. It's a great barefoot walking rug Uh, what else in my notes here Him and every shot of him in front of a car like outside the house that I'm doing anything that rolls He looked tremendous. I'm not sure if they use a different lens. Everything just looks so clean and beautiful Her walking into the houses. He's playing pool to shot Don't let me sleep later than three tomorrow. Okay Apparently he just always slept it until three or four p.m Everyday his inner circle the Memphis I mafia Man did they did those guys just have it made in the shade for however many years they were with Elvis I'd love to read a book on them. We're an audio book read to me at that about their lives the 68 come back special Of them on stage just playing like jamming out together It's unbelievable. Yeah Oh, I mean that thing is gorgeous too. There's a few 4k restorations that people have tried to do for those videos if you can find them on YouTube Um, there's one scene where I think she is walking in the hallway where she dies her hair in school Like the day after and a none even turns her head to gawk at her. What is this none doing my god Please So piss at the Um her cheating on the test. Remember cheating on test in school trying to peek over at someone's book God, I hate it school It gets better folks Um Three days in bed and he ruins it with a pillow fight. Oh, I love the scene up until I'm on it Was pull the rights I wanted to read more about like the Ann Margaret engagement. So I did um You know when she she goes where she like goes to Malibu or something to because she feels like something is happening And I guess in one of those one of those instances in real life like Ann Margaret or I can't remember if it was Ann Margaret or another woman he was having an affair with She leaked to the press that they are engaged because she was pissed And that's how that started she like she's told the press core like oh, yeah, by the way We're engaged. Oh, um, and that's just how that kind of stuff started I actually wanted to learn more about you know those those moments and those kind of like affairs It and so then I was curious like you know You see the karate teacher later in the movie when she's trying to have her own life and she is having her own life She did have an affair with that guy Um, and they lived together for a few years after the divorce Hmm I don't it was like so vaguely inferred in that scene. I was like I guess they are a parking and between karate sessions karate I am at three and a half stars for Priscilla. I had trouble connecting with the way the movie was told and I know that it's on purpose You know, I just wanted more from I mean 75% of the movie 80% of the movie you have no idea what Priscilla is thinking You're supposed to kind of know and I get that but I kind of wanted You know more emotion from Priscilla, you know, maybe a little bit more of an outburst She only really has like two outbursts and the entirety of the relationship Um, and then you like the the most emotion you see from Priscilla is when she's Out dinner at that dinner party with the karate instructor. She's laughing it up y'all can have a good time I mean, that's how like the the end of the movie And I and I again, I understand that's the point of the movie Wanted it wanted a little bit more. Yeah, it does feel like it's bottled up and it never releases So especially walk out of the movie feeling There I can see like the unsatisfaction with that of just feeling that it's there's no resolution in it in some ways with this I did like it. It's gorgeous cinematography is beautiful Love the shots of and especially when she's at the house and she goes into that room and just the one Slipper of light is on her face. That's like an alternate poster that I shared Holy cow Can you actually have to sit there and listen to Elvis read you the Bible? I mean absolute nightmare. I don't know I can do it. I mean For me for me that is an absolute nightmare Elvis know Jacob Valardi maybe Okay, that is Priscilla next up is we have some letters. I have a voicemail that I forgot to play with apologies to our dear friend Jonesy loves beer. Yeah, she feels like time. What a run. What a run. We have there So let's let's hear what Jonesy has to say 70 millimeter. This is your uh fellow pigdeck alum Jonesy loves beer JLB to the masses. I just finished listening to your Friday at 13th episode. Great episode I wanted to comment on the origin of Friday 13th which gave you a question Now in Masonic lore that is free Mason lore Friday 13th originated as a battle clock day or an unlucky day one in 1307 King Philip of France I believe ordered the arrest of the night's 10th are all around Europe he had feared that the knights had grown in power of course It's popular theory they invented modern banking and that they had seized a lot of the wealth and control and of course were their own private army Um, and the king of France didn't like that because he owed them a bunch of money So he figured what better way than not to own the body than to order their arrest and kind of take over their order And it is also a popular Ancestor of order 56 What's our words? It was um, I believe George was citing some poetry when that order was kind of brought about the same way that uh King Philip Get the night's 10th more So that's it. That's my two cents probably means nothing to anybody, but I thought I'd chime in while he's all bye My god, nobody fact check him It's poetry Jonesy also is the host of the Twin Vipers podcast martial arts action movies So if I mean if you like what you just heard We got a podcast for you I just asked chat GPT what the origin Of the not the bad luck with 13 is Let's just say I'm getting different answers Uh, jamesy thank you. Hello 70 mm first time long time yada yada I was just listening to slim recount the tragedy of the groaning women on the flowers on the killers of the flower moon episode And was inspired to share my own theater experience with you Just for a minute. I got like 20 plus comments in that review people agreeing and have shared experiences I saw a flower moon with three close friends at seven p.m. on a Thursday in my rundown local AMC in Connecticut Our theater was nearly empty and everyone was quiet and polite throughout the film Always quite well in fact until the entire theater lost power I need to stress to you that this happened almost exactly three hours into the movie During the interrogation sequence people screamed people swore Something magical happened then as the audience sat in the dark for the next half hour while the staff got the projector running again We all began to discuss the movie thus far what The man directly in front of us had been asleep since the 20 minute marks So we came together as a community to catch him up We did competing terrible Leo impressions to pass the time In capilleters my wife is very sick And wondered among ourselves what he had stuffed in his cheeks to look like that After 45 minutes the movie started up again and suddenly became a comedy Every word and expression from Leo became pure comedy Maybe being in the theater for over four hours had driven us all collectively insane But it was for sure one of the most memorable movie experiences. I've ever had thanks for the pod and happy November Niko in Connecticut P.S. They did give us all free AMC tickets So I guess I'm saying Priscilla now. Oh my gosh. What a better AMC This is why you have to go to theaters. So I gotta go to AMC. This is why we miss things. We love the AMC We make movies better Oh some good letters good VMs this week Just a reminder for your patron get your mailbag letters in the next few weeks before record Napoleon But next week the killer Fincher he's back Thanks on Netflix Already right now It's there hey oh Everyone has Netflix right Who among us has not canceled Netflix Uh in the recent weeks so That's it and then after that Raging bull After that Napoleon Huge I feel so far part of for November So far so great Two great movies And It's we only go up from here I think we're gonna break the five star mark at some point last month for the killer Dan Do you think you're gonna drop five stars for the killer?
