Hey, it's your old pal Slim, and this is 70 millimeter of podcasts for film lovers, just like you.
Every Monday, I chat about recently watched movies with my close friend and artist, Danny Haas.
I remember sweating through my clothes, playing the rock band, the guitar solos.
I just couldn't stop.
And our close friend and movie insider, Pertalexis.
Uh, I had a great time with my dear friend Slim in the theater.
I mean, you know, we sit down, of course, he's got a he's got a box of bunch of crunch
right there with him.
And you know, the movie's starting.
He looks over at me once a bunch of crunch.
Every month, we have a new theme that guides our main discussion later in the show.
And this time, it's comic book month.
We left the final pick up to our supporters on Patreon to vote for.
And they chose Scott Pilgrim versus the world directed by Edgar Wright.
And you can use the chapters to skip right to that discussion.
Is this the most rewatchable cult classic?
Or is it just for old people like me who have to explain to our audience what guitar hero was?
Let's find out.
Now.
We have to kick off the next month's theme.
People, I mean, the complications involved in next month's theme.
The planning involved.
We sat back.
I can't believe first of all that comic book month is over.
We finished this is like the fastest month in history.
I feel like we do like three episodes.
My God, flew by.
Thank God.
Yeah.
So, you know, in our DMs,
I feel comfortable when revealing some of this because it's just, you know, show planning stuff.
Right.
We had this like idea for July.
And some of the images that popped into our heads were like,
uncle Sam pointing, but it's part of his face.
General Patton, but it's Proto.
And it says Proto in the background.
Those images are created somewhere.
I don't know where it is right now.
So next month is going to be Proto pendants.
We've Danny and I have had enough of Proto's shenanigans
and complaining about not being able to choose movies.
So we have come up with a scheme where Proto every week will present to us.
A group of movies.
Right.
Do I have this right?
And then one of us,
maybe it's, I don't know, I forgot to discuss this.
Maybe it's me picking at the end of the show.
Based on what Proto provides at the top of the show.
Right.
And then maybe like you would be next week, I think, or the week.
Yeah, I don't think we just discuss it.
How about you let me take over here?
Just take over, please.
Take the floor's yours.
Slim producer, if you could in the background when I was speaking, put some kind of like
hatred, music, maybe like the pledge of allegiance or something.
You know, in my version, you know, you heard the slim propaganda,
but I was threatened all years that, hey,
what if, what if we make Proto pick all the movies for a month, huh?
How about that?
That's what happened.
That's a fact.
I was threatened multiple times.
And I said, you know what?
I don't remember what I said.
First of all, the first time.
But what eventually came to is that, you know, this month,
we celebrate our nation's independence.
But what if we could have something better where you were dependent on me
in some way?
So there's going to be some freedom here, right?
Where they pick a movie, but it's curated by me.
So I have, I have now, I have assembled a team.
I have assembled.
Proto is our TCM.
He's our TCM this month.
Nine themes.
Nine themes.
What the hell?
You have four themes.
There's a lot.
I want to give you guys a lot of options.
There are nine themes.
I will tell you the themes.
Then, I mean, you can decide who gets to pick them.
If you guys want to do it together,
or if you want to take turns picking them,
whatever it's, whatever you want to do,
I'll let you decide how you want to figure this out.
But you pick a theme and when you pick the theme,
you're locked in and I will reveal four movies within that theme.
Oh my God.
So this is how it's going to work, okay?
Are you ready to hear the themes?
Are we doing this right now?
Let's just go.
Let us put this.
I just want to also point out that I think I also suggested
you know, the Dewey defeats Truman or like that image.
I wanted like a person of that, but it was Proto.
It changes the text.
So yeah, that was a great day in our DMs.
It was a great day.
Come up with this idea.
All right, so here's the themes.
One, modern bangers.
This will be four movies from the last five years
that I consider all bangers.
Okay.
That's theme number one.
Theme number two, normal men.
You're just some films featuring normal men.
Number three.
Now this is a theme that I want to do for a whole month,
but it just didn't gain a lot of traction from either of you.
So I don't think it's ever going to happen.
So three is horse week.
Oh my God.
You're always bringing up these horse movies
in the uncut episodes I think at the end of the night.
You're like, oh, I'll be great to do this
Spielberg horse movie.
And the power is now in your hands.
Four, laugh or die.
Okay.
I think that's pretty self-explanatory.
Number five, LB Top 250 narrative list.
Oh my God.
I've got four movies from the LB Top 250.
Six is AFI list.
So maybe you can help me out on my journey.
You can watch one.
Seven is A24.
All A24 movies.
Theme number eight is crime lovers.
So if you're craving some crime,
those.
And then the final theme is mystery
all tour director.
We have not covered the show.
Mystery all tour director.
Oh my God.
Those are the nine themes.
So now you guys have the choice to pick one of these.
And then I'll tell you the movies.
And then at the end of the show,
you can tell me you can reveal which one.
So Danny, do you want to go this week or next week?
I'll start us off.
All right, here we go.
This is big.
I am going to pick the theme.
A24.
Wow.
Oh.
We're going to hold it for 24 month.
Week.
This is exciting.
Okay.
All right.
I'm just going to take these four pictures here.
And I'm going to drop them in.
So these are your options.
We've got
after sun.
Swiss Army man.
The last black man in San Francisco.
Or the lobster.
Wow.
Okay.
So at the end of the show,
Danny will have to reveal his choice for next week.
We're proud to know what it is.
What?
Sorry.
We're revealed at the end.
At the end.
You have to stick around to the end.
Okay.
You have to stick around for the end.
Stick around.
Proto pendants.
Proto defeats Truman.
Me.
Dot meme.
We did.
Angie.
Big, big month.
I'm excited for this month.
Big month.
We're so sick of Proto talking about horses
that we were finally putting the power in his hands
for this month.
Proto and I had a date this week.
You did talk about it.
Our second date movie date ever since
Portrait of the Lady on Fire.
Proto and I got an advanced screening
of Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning in IMAX.
Unreal.
This was like a press screening
that they don't usually do plus ones
but I'm guessing Mission Impossible
is not screening outside of IMAX
if possible for press.
And that's like a huge auditorium
so they gave plus ones.
Proto, what did you think of Dead Reckoning?
Part one.
Did you get one letterbox review Proto?
I didn't see it.
You dropped it.
I did.
I did.
Scandalist review to sum.
I had a great time
with my dear friend Slim in the theater.
I mean, you know, we sit down.
Of course, he's got a he's got a box of bunch of crunch
right there with him.
And the movie's starting.
He looks over at me.
He wants a bunch of crunch.
Gave me the handful.
Beautiful.
And I mean, this Dolby theater.
I mean, has Dolby figured it out?
Or what?
Yeah.
God.
There's a, this isn't a spoiler.
There's a train sequence.
It's in the trailer.
Everyone's saying it.
But in this Dolby theater,
you can feel the train move through you.
It's crazy.
So it was a fantastic theater experience
being in there.
I gave this movie three stars.
Oh, great.
That's good.
That's good.
Proto, Mission Impossible Three Star.
That's a five-star really.
Mission Impossible Seven Three Star.
I'll take it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I think, um,
yeah, I think so.
I think, you know,
maybe the scandalous thing that I said was that I,
you know, I had some words for, for our friend Tom Cruise.
Oh, that's true.
Just that I think he's starting to show his age a little bit
in his acting.
Okay.
And I think the thing that really stood out to me if there's any
moment, there's a moment in this movie where
um, he has to intercept this woman.
And Tom does it in a way
that like he goes up and he like grabs her and turns,
and turns her to him in a way of like,
hey, I'm like this sexy
stranger that you're seeing right now.
You want to interact with me.
But what we're all seeing is what looks like a six-year-old
businessman like assaulting a woman.
And it just doesn't work anymore with Tom.
I'm sorry.
It just doesn't work.
So that was just one moment, you know,
but there's many others.
But the thing that that pleasantly surprises me in this is that it's,
it's very funny.
When I watched Fallout, one of my, my gripes was that I didn't think
they lean enough into like the comedy aspect that they have
in this whole series.
And I feel like this one did a much better job where there,
I mean, there was, we were,
the theater was cracking up a lot of differences.
I mean, I heard, I heard you slim.
I was dying at the.
Yeah.
Any car joke that happened at one point.
I agree with that one scene.
It didn't work with the sunglasses and Tom,
business suit, Tom.
So Fallout, I had like this amazing experience of Fallout.
It was the culmination of all those movies.
And my extended thoughts obviously will happen in the interview
with the podcast vampire podcast.
The Tom Cruise retrospective with Jonesy and Dale.
But this one feels like almost like a reset
because they close so many things with Fallout that it's like a brand new thing.
So that was like one thing,
me mentally just trying to come to grips with like,
this isn't the journey that I remember.
This is like new.
This is like a brand new starting point.
It has the same characters obviously,
but it's not the emotional thing
that I loved and fall out.
It's very different.
I mean, the action set pieces are nuts.
Like the last action set pieces.
Pretty wild.
I think I have to see it again to give a
my real rating, you know?
Double dip.
You got a double dip.
How about this Dune 2 trailer that dropped.
A lot of messages flying in our group
about this Dune 2 trailer, Danny.
You pumped?
I got the chills.
Okay.
There was some moments in it where
I have to be like, you know, fooled me once.
I'm not going to get fooled again with this.
These great trailers they make for these movies.
It's happened many times, not just with the first Dune.
But yeah, I thought I thought it was a really solid trailer.
The music sounded incredible.
Everyone bringing the ray game for round two.
So I'm looking forward to it.
Part of the G-watch it.
I did.
Yeah, and it got me pumped because
seeing the first part one, was that 2021 we saw that?
It's forever ago.
Mid-medemic.
It was, I mean, that was one of the best theater experiences of the year.
So it gets me excited to be back in the theater,
watching more, Danny, and his handy work in the Dolby.
I'll be in the Dolby theater.
Oh, speaking of which.
Yeah, I meant to bring up when we were seeing the movie.
I didn't feel this the last time I said the theater,
but the seats shook.
It was like, not 40X, but it was seat shaking.
I never had that before.
That's the base.
That's the Dolby.
But it's like the seat.
It's not just the Dolby being so loud that the room shakes.
I feel like the seats are moving.
No.
Part of back me up here.
So I mean, stop him.
I want to play both sides.
If I come, we don't.
It is so strong that it does feel like they're shaking the seats individually.
But I think Danny might be right.
I think the base is so strong that it feels like it's running through you.
That feels like hogwash.
And I need a Dolby representative that's listening right now to confirm whether or not
that it's just the base shaking.
I mean, that feels unsafe.
I'm on like the fifth floor of a building in Philadelphia.
And the base is so strong that the structural integrity of my seat is at risk.
The nuts and bolts of that building are coming apart from that base.
Cripes.
What else does I want to get into?
Oh, I mean, the big news.
Danny, from this recording, you came from Dial of Destiny, Indiana Jones.
I walked out of my car into the podcast studio just leaving the theater from Dial of Destiny.
I want to see it Dolby
in the AMC theater at Disney with a bunch of friends.
Just to set the stage, if I may, you've been extremely nervous.
Nervous.
You've been dreading this moment.
The final battle for Henry Dr. Jones.
And it's over.
It's finished for me.
There's no more indies after this.
It's hard to put into words what this movie was.
I think for someone like me who likes Crystal Skull, I'm a praise Crystal Skull.
This is Leaps and Bounds better than Crystal Skull.
I had an incredible time watching this film.
Wow.
Haters retire.
Just retire.
Get out.
Get out of here.
I had so much fun watching this.
This is, you know what's also great about this supporting cast.
Harrison has a great supporting cast around him in this.
Helen Phoebe is great.
Love her.
Love her wit.
Great style too.
Yeah, she looked incredible.
I mean, it was a lot of fun.
I feel like
I could easily give this five stars.
I have to marinate on it.
I had to marinate on it.
But I had a great time.
You got a double dip.
I'm dipping in three times, at least.
It's trying to angle in a vibrating seat-chip to triple dipping,
but I'm going to withhold for now.
So you probably didn't see my review.
You were abstaining from the news.
You know, I saw it come in the quick star and I didn't read.
I could read.
I saw your stars and I'm like, oh, Lord, here we go.
Do you agree with my statement that this feels like one of the,
if not the most Indiana Jones storylines?
Like, when you combine the kind of finale
and take into account the novels,
to me, it feels like one of the most Indiana Jones stories ever.
You know, I would agree with you on that.
It really does and I don't, it's just hard to not spoil any bits of it,
but I agree.
There's some twists and turns that are like, yes,
this feels not back to formula,
but it just feels kind of on the nose for Indy.
It felt good.
Harrison was great.
I can't wait now.
George Bush mission accomplished.
That PNG.
We did it.
We did it, George.
Wait, that's not George.
Can we photoshop George Lucas on that image?
On the other carrier?
Let's see, what do we have time for?
We got to talk about new patrons.
Scott M and Matt joined this past week through the VHS
of Village Disc, or Discounts on Danny's Prince.
We just broke news that the meetup has been pushed to early 2024.
The second ever VHS village meetup.
So patrons are getting all those details,
getting all the breaking news about the meetup happening.
If you want to join us.
Every week we give out a free year of letterboxed patron.
Used to be probable.
We're stepping up our game.
It's up.
This review from Wyatt cracked me up.
It's one of my questions when we get into Scott Pilgrim
versus the world letter.
I left this review.
I'm going to be honest.
About a third of the movie, I almost turned it off
because I was so weirded out by it.
This is a movie for a specific taste to love.
And that's just not me.
Don't get me wrong.
There are some enjoyable elements,
like remote and Chris Evans' Lucas leave.
But I don't see myself rewashing this anytime soon.
I feel like almost could be a part of all to count.
You're not giving this Patreon, are you?
Excuse me?
Yeah, that got Patron.
That review?
Yeah.
Tagged 70 mm pod.
That's how you get entered to win that free patron.
All right, Danny's pest.
Let's see.
I have some other topics,
but we're about 20 minutes in.
I'm trying to maintain our time here.
Can I talk about one movie?
Please.
I fired up the old
you know,
watching able to watch movies in other countries.
Machine.
I watched I like movies this week.
Wow.
And I loved that film.
I had a great time watching it.
And you know what I was surprised by?
Is I thought it was going to be kind of something.
I thought it was going to be silly.
I don't think I've watched a trailer for it.
It gets heavy.
It gets a bit heavy.
And I was impressed by the performances and writing and that.
And it's a good film.
Had a good time.
My favorite movie last year.
My number one movie.
It's a available VOD.
VOD Canada.
So if you have a Canadian.
Put your passports.
Your passport out.
Stamp them.
Yeah, there are so many great scenes in that movie.
You know, it's essentially we talked about a while ago,
but it follows the kind of like narcissistic
movie fan who works at a video store teenager,
which I've obviously shifted to.
Yeah.
But there's so many like great little funny homages.
Like there's a there's a shining homage and one scene that's hilarious.
When they're talking about wild things,
it's a great movie.
I love it.
Yeah.
Fantastic.
Need a physical release ASAP.
ASAP.
What are we doing?
We need to make some calls.
Who do we call?
Should we get into Scott Pilgrim?
We are SXB-BOMB!
What do you think?
Clothes out comic book month before Proto pendants.
Where he has all the cards.
For us laid out.
You know?
Scott Pilgrim versus the world.
Edgar Wright ever heard of him?
This was the villager vote.
The villagers voted this movie over Ninja Turtles 1989 and Blade.
They said no.
We don't want that.
We want Scott Pilgrim.
Or what's this movie about?
Scott Pilgrim is a 20-something bass player in a band with an ex-girlfriend.
He has started dating knives, a 17-year-old high school student,
to the chryprin of his roommate, his sister, and every other person in his life.
But when he meets Ramona, the girl of his dreams,
and the girl who has been appearing in his dreams,
he dumps knives to begin the rest of his life with Ramona.
But Ramona has a little secret.
She has seven evil exes who will stop at nothing to fight Scott in an epic battle of being the ultimate sim.
I love that word.
Oh boy.
So the graphic novel, the first one of Scott Pilgrim came out in 2004.
Digest size, black and white, or six of them, only press.
We talked about it last week.
I asked you, Danny, if you were slinging these books at it,
nerds at your comic shop.
And you said no, right?
You were giving them something else.
You weren't giving them Scott Pilgrim.
What did I say?
I don't know.
We decided it does make a fun of walking dead fans for 20 minutes.
That's that seems about right.
Well, the only things that we could have sold at that point is the hard covers.
And that's what we sold a lot of.
So that's what I have left is, I don't have my floppies.
I have my colors, the recolor, like the first color of the color it is.
Yeah, they're gorgeous.
And I love them.
Yeah, that was my first intro into Scott before the movie came out.
Yeah, the first cover to this is seared into my brain.
I know I have that in a long box somewhere.
So part of last week, he said you never watched the movie, but I guess I'm assuming
that means you never read any of the comics, the digest size comics.
Yeah, I never read the comics.
I mean, I knew the name, but nothing about it really stood out to me,
or even like reading the description just didn't really do anything for me.
So I guess, yeah, I just was not interested at all when this was coming out.
First ever viewing.
Yeah, I remember this being a big deal when it came out.
Obviously, a huge cast, which we'll get into, but box office bust.
Busted.
Big time bust.
Flash level bust.
I don't think it made its money back and it's theatrical run, but I think it made some money back
on DVD, Blu-ray type thing.
I don't even know where Blu-ray came out, but...
And the Dolby re-release.
Really?
Yeah, they did a Dolby re-release of it with Edgar.
Did you see that Netflix is making an anime with the same cast?
I did not see that.
Yeah, they announced it in March of this year, apparently.
Excuse me.
So I'm pretty much for that.
Yeah, that should be rad.
So let's go around the room.
Each host jot's down three things we want to talk about during our discussion.
We'll give our final letterbox reading at the end.
So let's start with Prado.
This is a first viewing experience.
I'm fascinated to hear what first time viewers think of this movie.
Prado, what's on your list?
The first thing on my list, and I think this is the thing that just stands out the most,
is really the editing of this movie and the transition and the way it moves from scene to scene,
which is, of course, a very reminiscent of Edgar Wright's other movies that I've seen,
Sean of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz, which also have amazing transitions.
And just like the way it moves from scene to scene, just the different tricks they use,
it's just fun visually.
There's so many visual gags in this, not only with the transitions,
but just the other ways they incorporate the arcade numbers into this and just text on the screen.
It feels very much fitting, I would say, to the movie and the tone,
and it works really well.
And it's not like a gimmick that's played off in one scene,
and it's pretty consistent throughout the movie.
So I found myself just really enjoying that.
It wasn't distracting, it was fun, it was funny,
and it was pleasing to watch as it all just moved and flowed from scene to scene.
It flows fast. It's very fast.
There's a lot of funny gags that, if you look at something for 10 seconds,
you might miss three different jokes that are happening on screen.
That's what struck me on this rewatch as well.
I think Jonathan Amos and Paul Maclis edited this movie,
and it is the same crew that generally work with Edgar.
I think Paul actually worked on the flash, believe it or not, if you want to know.
It's on the problem.
To be honest, I thought the flash was very funny.
But yeah, the editing in this, it's so on point,
it feels like the perfect match to the comic.
The comic has so many quick gags and visual gags that we're probably pretty difficult
to try to come up with in a movie form, because if I was like Brian Leo Malley,
the creator of the comic, I'd be pretty nervous if someone was to adapt this.
What is this going to look like?
You're going to adapt my comic book.
It's going to look like ass probably on screen.
I don't even think he had the book finished at the time when they started writing this.
Now, the final one wasn't out yet.
Right, so they had to, I think he even helped pin the ending of this film.
Which is also different from the book, which is special.
Yeah, there's six, there's six books.
Pretty quick reads, though.
Yeah, I agree. I love the editing.
I think what is great about the editing, too,
is it really lends itself to be like a comic book?
It's almost page turning type cuts to different scenes.
My favorite kind of gags are like the P bar when he's taking a piss.
And it's almost like, because that scene always gets me, because you can see the P bar
and the reflection of the mirror to the right of them.
And it's like, it's almost as if it's in world.
Like this, this bar is actually there.
It's like little details that have extra thought put into them.
The lightning bolts coming off the guitars are one of my favorite animation bits.
And I love the pop-up bubbles when you first see Wallace,
the roommate, and it starts selling like, Wallace's stuff, Wallace's stuff.
Like it releases all his items in the apartment.
Just all the little gags like that are always going to win me over.
My number one, I was like going to say like this is kind of just a weird movie,
but I guess this is maybe just an example of a cult classic movie,
even though it has like a really giant budget.
I guess like cult classic movies generally aren't like super expensive.
I don't know anyone research that, but like, and no more evident than the scene where
they homage Seinfeld when he comes back after spending the night with
Bermona.
Oh my god, I was dying at that scene.
But I'm thinking of myself like, who else is going to get this?
And I always come back recently.
I always come back to our friend Ian, former producer of the show,
Natalie Scrazed, saying that no one under 35 cares about Terminator.
And I'm thinking I'm like, well, what do people under 35 or 30 think of Scott Pilgrim,
right? Like, I know a lot of our audience is younger.
So I'd be curious to know what that audience thinks of Scott Pilgrim,
because there's got to be some things that just feel weird.
And I think probably your review referenced that a little bit, right?
Yeah, I said in my review, is this what Gen Z means when they say millennials are cringe?
Because even like that, like the Seinfeld, like, I don't know if, you know, people,
you know, 15 years younger than us are watching Seinfeld or like, like, to me, it's you big,
like at, you know, we're old enough for it to have been like, at that point,
wherever, just everyone watch Seinfeld, right? But I don't know if that's still true,
if like that gag would even register for everyone.
Of course, I'm like totally out of my own. I have like no idea if people would or not.
But then even like the cast, too, like all of these actors, you know, I didn't see this at the time.
So I, a lot of these, I probably wouldn't have even known. But now, of course, like,
like, you know, you know, all of these people. Yeah.
So I wonder like what the relationship is people, you know, or just even like the humor of like
Michael Sarah, if it, if it works for people, I love Michael Sarah, love him. Yeah.
He's one of my, my acting heroes. Oh, he's so funny. Yeah.
And everything he does, this is, I mean, this movie in particular, it's like the role was made
for him in this movie. So every scene he's in, every reaction, it's infinitely quotable,
like almost half his dialogue. Mosh and chat, if you love him so much, why don't you kiss him?
I would if I could, Mosh, if he would, if he would allow it.
Does his performance match the character in the comic?
I honestly can't even remember the last time I read the comic book. It might have been in the
2008 era when I, when I last let it. That's really how you kind of imagine it, though, because it's
a very, it's a very kind of cartoonist illustration style. Anyway, it's very minimal.
And the characters look nothing like real people. I mean, they, like, they're just animated
versions of people. So I don't, I think, I think what helps what matches the comic the best is
almost frame by frame shots of what is in the comic. Yeah. And I was kind of like alluding to it
last episode at the end of the show with, like, kind of cultural moments, like,
Scott Pilgrim was a cultural moment for people that read comic books in America at that time.
Somewhere to the walking dead. But I don't know, it just feels like Scott Pilgrim hasn't
it hasn't maintained that height in modern whatever. I don't know, just feel like it kind of
just plateaued and went down in the kind of mainstream psyche. So I don't really know. That's
why I'm just fascinated to see what normies think of like a Scott Pilgrim, you know, because it's
not like maintained in IP incessantly. And that's probably Brian Leo Malle's decision, like,
my father go to the well so often. Danny, your number one. You know, my number one is something that
always strikes me when I see this film. I ever, the choreographed fight scenes in this, I think
are brilliant. And I, and I think they're really well done for a movie where I'm supposed to believe
that Michael Sarah can kick anyone's ass. And there are, I think the first fight where he fights,
the fights, Patel, I'm sitting there every, I think every time I watch this film, I'm like,
can Michael Sarah actually fight like this? Because it's so well edited and so well done that
every fight I'm like, damn, Michael Sarah can kick ass. It's really good. It's so funny too, because the
like, if you're not following along like the fight breaks out, you're like, oh, this is what this
movie is going to get into. And then it's just like normal. And Michael Sarah is good at fighting.
Yeah. Like he wins like instantly. And it's normal. And he gets the coins like, oh, look coins.
Yeah. It's so cool. But I'm always blown away by it. And I think it has, I forget if it was,
I thought I read that someone from the Matrix worked on this as well.
But it just blows my mind these fights. It's even even the fight with Mary Elizabeth,
with her hammer. And I mean, every fight scene kind of blows me away. I think they're great.
And Chris Evans is hilarious in his fight scene. But yeah, I'm blown away by the hand-to-hand combat
in this. Yeah. Pro. Yeah, let's, we could talk about some of the smaller bit roles. Yeah,
I thought that Chris Evans scene was hilarious. Man, he's really funny in those moments that
whatever they're doing with his eyebrows, I don't know if he's like holding that or if they
were like taped or painted on or what. But that looked amazing. Like his lines were just like
hilarious too. I forget he does something that he pulls out his phone. He just is like, that's
actually hilarious. That's actually hilarious.
Alarious. There's just, and there's so many moments like there was, like I got pointless to
like keep writing them down because it was just like so many funny lines throughout this from
the different characters. I mean, Aubrey Plaza was hilarious too with just like her little role
and a Kendrick with just the stuff they did. And like the way it all worked in together was
amazing and how they kept coming back to them. I loved it. Yeah, the cast is nuts. I have the page
up. I mean, Michael Sarah, Mary Elizabeth Wednesday, Kieran Culkin, Jason Schwartzman, Aubrey,
Anna, Chris Evans, Brandon Ralph, Danny's boy, my boy Larson. And I was like, man, I honestly
forgot Brie Larson was even in this. And I was like, what? What happened to Brie? Like she's
unrecognizable and I googled she's 19 in this movie where she was 19 when they filmed it. Everyone
was so young when they filmed it. That song, that metric song that she sings. Oh my god. What a jam.
And Chris Evans walks out to the Universal fanfare. I lose it. It's so funny to me. It makes
no sense. God, what a friggin cast. What a friggin cast. I mean, just to continue, Perth's thoughts,
Mary Elizabeth, when instead, listen Mary, if you're listening to this, let's go get milkshakes. Let's
just have a chat, a long walk. I love to get to know you. I mean, this, when this movie came out,
I think that this was it. White dude's my age are we're in love from the second. This movie came out.
That's your story. I think I know her from anything else.
Cloverfield Lane. We're about to know her.
Haara. Haara. Oh, that's far worse. She's going to be in the Soka TV show. Oh,
wait, does that mean she's going to have that like? Yeah.
My number two, that wasn't my number two. I just wanted to continue that thought. Thank you.
One of the most quotable movies ever, at least for me that grew up with this movie. I'm in
lesbians with you. Bread makes you fat. I can't even count that high how many times I've heard
people say that line. Girl pirates are in this year. The sex bubble,
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. There's just so many great lines in
this. It's amazing. I mean, it was like walking down memory lane, rewatching this movie. It was
not. Didn't you know Todd vegan. Vegan stuff. Oh, my God. The vegan police scene with Thomas
Jane. Thomas Jane. Oh, my God. What a strange scene. And then they high five each other as they leave.
What is going on? What a moment. What a frigging moment.
Danny number two. Number two, let's we got to talk about the music. I
I couldn't believe, I think I haven't seen this in years. And I when someone, I think whoever
emailed last week or couple weeks ago was talking about soundtracks, I forgot how much I'd
listened to this soundtrack. Like on repeat, I think when I first saw this film. And right when
Kim, the drum beat from the beginning, the opening credits, it just gives me the chills. Just
jamming out to this music. It's so good. Every track. I think one of my favorite scenes is when
they're doing the the the amp verse amp scene with the gorilla and the and the drag and just love
those. It's just incredible. It's incredible. The soundtrack. I couldn't get over it.
Remember guitar hero. Yes. Oh, yes. What was the band one? Rock band band. Oh, my God.
How old am I for having to ask about a guitar hero? Everyone listening right now,
but I was shutting off the podcast. I remember how many parties you had with like guitar hero and
rock band. Oh, we bring in us to the next meetup. Remember that tool song that was like so hard,
but it had like a 10 minute solo and you're like washing your buddy, try to do the tools.
For me, it was the dragon for song. Good Lord. Oh, my God. So did you have this drum set?
No, I only played the guitar. Oh, we had we had the drum set. Well, we we would literally go to a
friend's house every Thursday night to play rock band and I would play guitar. One person
played drums. We had a singer and it was my buddy Wands and we literally called our band Thursday
nights at once. It was the best. I loved that game so much. That was rock band or was a guitar hero.
That was like the crypto of its day. That company blew up like anything they put out. They were
the next biggest tech company and then they just like vanished in like two years. I remember sweating
through my clothes playing the rock band, the guitar solos. But it couldn't stop.
I remember like when that was like phasing out and just like the the commentary on like people
trying to get rid of like these plastic sets. Like you couldn't you couldn't give them away and they
were just like piling up on the on the side of the road. For our younger audience rock band
a guitar hero was a video game where you had a mini guitar and they had buttons on the guitar. You
had to try to play and match the song by hitting the buttons and then rock band had all the instruments.
And you could also sing. It's like karaoke but more fun. I have photos of Jonesy playing guitar
here at my house wearing a blonde wig that would knock your socks off. I think I have those
videos somewhere of me playing. Yeah, there are. I think we're we're pro to number three already
we're flying through. Oh my gosh. I actually don't really have a ton of notes.
We always just like through we blow through comedies. Anytime we do a comedy I feel like our
discussions aren't that long. Yeah. Yeah, I kind of just have like random moments. I mean,
I loved Kirin Culkin. Yeah. Hilarious. All his little bits. Just the whole the whole gay jokes
throughout that with him were great with the just the the thing with him stealing the
Scott's sister's boyfriend and then the boyfriend like showing up in their apartment. That was Hilarious.
You got to read the book. I think you don't enjoy it because that that's like seen for scene in
the book. It's almost perfect. Yeah. I also love the scene. Oh, it was the the pee scene where the
pee is going down. But then the way Michael Sarah tried his hands. It's like the funniest thing.
Just two towels on the side. He just like taps the tails. The towels as if like that's all he
needed to do. There's just something about Michael Sarah and like his grip on comedy that I
agree totally, Slim. I think he is like genius. To me, he's like he's like Jack Black to me. Like
it doesn't matter what he's doing. Like he like I don't even know what his background is. I don't
know if like he ever did comedy or whatever. Or he's just like one of those guys where it doesn't
matter what he's doing. He's just funny. And I feel the same way about Jack Black. And that's why I like
that movie year one where they're they're it's them together. Yeah. Just being so stupid.
We thought about the movies since it came out. That was another bomb. I feel like you're one.
I think my one of my the moments that I laughed the hardest that was when Kieran answers the
door to knives. And Michael jumps through the window behind him. It cracks me up every time.
Another line I forgot that I wrote my notes. I got a pee on her. I mean, I got a pee.
The gauge is in the middle. Yes. Number three for me. Yeah, I don't think I have anything.
Let me see if there's another note for my horrible mentions.
The battle the band scene is so funny when he's yelling down to the like the
what's the what are they called the golf band where it's like three people. And they're like having
that back and forth about we wrote the song about you. He's like the song right before that he's
like the song. He's called I'm so sad. I'm very, very sad. He starts playing it's like 10 notes.
Yeah, that was the song. Oh my god. This is a great friggin movie. My god. I was always cracking
me up seeing some like not sub three star reviews of Scott Pilgrim. But I was watching it
and Amanda came downstairs and like, oh man, Scott Pilgrim. I haven't thought about that in a
long time. But so not just me that is reminded of the humor in this film. You know, it's funny
as I watched it with my 15 year old daughter who I had lent the books and she read. And she was
cackling along with me. I was so happy. I was like, oh, she's not going to like any of this stupid
my age nonsense. But she was just enjoying it. She was loving it. She ever heard a guitar hero?
No. I don't think so. I mentioned Jason Schwartzman earlier in the cast list. Spirit of a hard
hashtag high five. Danny, what's your number three? I think we've covered most of it.
I love the final the final fight with Gideon. When he takes the one up, pulls the sword from his
chest. There's I just love that scene. That's that's all I have left of my notes. I'm a huge fan
of this movie. What's your rating? What's your rating? Yeah. I have no reason to not give this five stars.
It's just something I've loved forever. It's a visceral memory of seeing this in the theater with a
bunch of friends. And we were all having an amazing time. There's one, the few memories I have of
like a group of friends in a theater that we just all agreed on this movie and laughing and losing
our minds at it. So this is nostalgia fog all over it. And I don't even care because it's great.
Don't even care. I don't care. Five stars. Eat it. Proto? I think that was maybe my one
gripe is that I felt like the end they lost a little bit of like the comedy gas. It kind of just
got like more action oriented with like the final fight. So it kind of lost me a little bit
in the third act. But I had I had a good time like yeah I was trying to figure out how to rate this.
But I think you know having not read the books and looking at this maybe is like a from just like
a pure comedy standpoint. I mean I laughed a ton in this. I thought it was really funny. I was
laughing out loud. I have four stars. It's really a really funny movie. I think very rewatchable.
Oh yeah. I was literally just about to say this is one of the most rewatchable movies I can think of.
Put this on the background. You know put it on a channel run 24 seven.
Anything else in my honorable mentions vegan stuff just tremendous.
He gets thrown through the table and he gives Brandon Ralph like the half and half. We're like
here we have two cups. He's so dumb. He's like I just thought really hard about giving you.
This is easily my favorite Edgar Wright movie. Yes. Like I had forgotten how much I love this
movie. Yes. The other ones it's they're they're so far down the list. You know hot fuzz,
Sean of the dead. Whatever else he directed after that. I have no idea. But this is this is
tops five stars easy for me. Easy. The nega Scott scene. I remember when he like shows up. He
thought there was going to be like this giant battle and then they cut quick cut to them just
having a conversation leaving the building. He's actually a pretty cool guy.
You know what it reminds me of the vibe of this movie reminds me of Adventure Time a lot.
A comedy in Adventure Time. Yeah, you're right. Yeah. There's a there's a big match there for sure.
Okay. Comic book month is done so. Get it out of month. Maybe the fastest month in history.
A lot of good picks. Great month. Great month. But now we have to go back to Proto pendants.
Our theme for next month. We talked about at the top of the show. Proto presents Danny and I
with themes for the week. We choose the theme and there's four movies to choose from. So what are
Proto? Can you reiterate what Danny chose and our our movie options for next week?
Yeah, our movie options. Once again, after son so that he picked a 24. So it's after son Swiss
Army man, the last black man in San Francisco or the lobster.
I've seen the lobster. I love the lobster. Great movie. Not picking that.
There is a movie on this list that I've been dying to figure out how to get it on the show.
So once I saw it up there, I knew I had to pick it. So we're going to do last black man in San Francisco.
I've been dying to watch this movie and I've been waiting to find a time for the show. So once
I saw it, it's time. God, I just got chills. Wow. Let me see where this is available. I'm really
excited about this. This isn't a few spots. You can watch on Canapest or your local library.
Toobie. Support your local conglomerate. Voodoo. Pluto.
Plex. On the free streaming. So it's everywhere. You have no excuse to try this movie.
A synopsis for this film from 2019. Jimmy fails dreams of reclaiming the Victorian home
his grandfather built in the heart of San Francisco joined on his quest by his best friend Mont.
Jimmy searches for belonging in a rapidly changing city that seems to have left them behind.
So critically acclaimed film when this came out in 2019 for sure. I'm very excited.
Yeah, I've been wanting to watch this for a while too. Sweet.
My God. What a show. 50 minutes. We can't end. I mean, in 50 minutes, this is too short.
We've got time. What are you going to talk about? I mean, I have to go, we have to go back
because I the destiny. Let's go back. I skipped over some talking points from the top of
the show because I felt like we're running late. So maybe now we can check in because I had
questions for Danny on watching Mission Impossible 2. You give that like four and a half stars.
No, I give I have five stars bet five stars. You don't listen. That was a moment in my life
when that movie came out. I feel like I had just finally got around to watching the first one.
And I think I don't think I was as favorable in the first one then as I am now.
I think I still think the first one's my favorite out of all of them.
But to hit me in high school, end of high school, I think it was 2000, right?
And it was just right up my alley. I mean, Tom looks incredible. His hair is incredible in that film.
I think I've said punk put a hole in my Versace more than any other line quote in a movie.
I just, it really was one of my favorite action films for a long time. I haven't watched it.
I haven't watched it. Who knows how long? So seeing it with fresh eyes again, but still kind of
loving it. I remember every beat of that film. I couldn't get over how much I remembered of this film
haven't not seen it in years. And I don't care. It gets so much hate and I don't understand why
is a John Wu movie toward a force. What do you expect?
I don't see. Now the juxtaposition of watching one and then two from Depama to John Wu is a
whip lash. But I have so much fun watching this film. I don't get it.
I can imagine a free climbing. Is that what it's called free climbing?
The free climbing. What a stressful scene. I mean, one false move, Tom's dead.
Start that movie off. That one wire he's being hung on to do that scene.
He like there's wasn't there one moment where like he has to jump. Yes. And he lands on his one
plans. And then he like holds himself. I think he does that like Tom. The behind that. Yeah.
He also does like a nod. He like chuckles at himself.
It's it's baffles me. It's part of going to watch Mission Impossible 2. Should we do a Mission
Impossible 2 watch along? I mean, you're making me want to watch it now because I'd love to revisit it.
John Wu. Oh my God. You know what's also funny is the not the main bad guy but his henchman.
I would have I mean, I haven't seen forever. I would have put money down. I thought that was
Sean Bean. I thought Sean Bean isn't this movie? Just like dollars to her Sean Bean.
Do you remember I feel like this is probably the most well-known trivia. But Doug Ray Scott was
originally going to be Wolverine in the X-Men movie. But I think he he I can't remember the reason
why but he might have turned it down to do this. But he was he was in the running with what's
his face. Hugh Jackman. He did this instead. Marcy anyone's better than you. Oh, just just so I'm
just being made now. Just joshin. But yes, I love I love in my two. I just it's fun. It's so much fun
and ridiculous and Vingrams has been writing this in my train for a long time.
I saw him in the trailer of night. I was like, Ving, get paid, buddy.
See in the second one. Oh, yeah, yes. Yeah, I forgot. Just rewatch this too.
Yeah, I rewatched the first one recently and yeah, they could not be any more different.
Yeah, the first two. The first one is a perfect spy movie though. I love it. Tom Rock and
these casios. You kid me. These 30 dollar casios. My king. Golly. I'm looking at my review
from Mission Boswell. Ethan Hunt using the internet in 1996 is one of the most painful things I've
ever seen. God, that's the animation. The animation when he sends the the email and like the
mail folds up and then like slowly goes away. It's like, oh my god. There's like a time lapse of him,
you know, researching to try to contact Joe, but he's just going on like message wards and
sending the same email to the same address on each message. Yeah, different language. Six
hours. Like I could be an IMF agent if that's what he was doing in 1996.
Fricking brutal. Anyway, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I love that film. I don't know if I'm going to
continue. I really wasn't meaning to do like a mission possible journey before these new movies,
but I was on, um, I watched the first one on Paramount and it had a nice image for all of them.
So yeah, I watched the second one. They rebranded it. I saw that. They have the same thing.
They're pretty nice. Anyway, I had a blast. All right. We got to wrap. Obviously, it's almost
midnight. You know, dial a destiny happened tonight. Big night. We have a new theme next month.
Comic book month is in the past, starting fresh, celebrating our part of pendants next month.
Any closing thoughts, Bruno? Uh, you know, I didn't get to give any AFI journey updates,
but I could do it now. Um, still going on, watch two more movies this week. I watched
Shane from 1953, which is a Western, um, gave that three of stars. But then I saw the treasure
of the Sierra Madre. Oh, baby. Wow. This friggin picture, John Houston, 1948 with Humphrey Bogart,
Walter Houston, Tim Holt. It's about these gold prospectors. Uh, what a delightful picture.
I, I love this. Um, and it's considered a classic, classic for good reason. So, hey, I mean,
if you're looking for an old black and white movie, get this at your local library. Yeah.
They got to have a desk there. This is a prime library movie. You got, you got like,
you've been working hard at the local library, right? Yeah. Oh, I'm always grinding at the library.
You know me weekends. Oh, God. Put his reading glasses on, you know, run in his, his index finger
across the spines of those library DVDs to see what he can get. The smell of a library.
I should even have the, the cases there. Are they in like some kind of CD book that you got
to flip through to pull out those discs? Cases. My, uh, unfortunately, my local library sold out.
It's, um, you got to pay a buck to get a DVD from there. What? They're not free rentals. Yeah,
you got to, you can't borrow. You have to rent. That doesn't sound like a library. That sounds like
a, a business. I mean, it's hard times for the government, you know, everyone's trying to get
by with inflation. I'm so sick of this government. I'll celebrate our independence next month with,
uh, perturbendence. We need to get some more memes. If anyone does any famous historical moments
in the United States, they want to add part of his face too. By all means, add us on Twitter. I'll
retweet the hell out of those things. Don't forget my suggestion for George Bush on the carrier,
mission accomplished with George Lucas. All right, we'll see you over next week for
