What's the difference between the ground floor and the first floor? Excellent question. In American English, the first floor is the one that's the same level as the ground or the street. And after the first floor, then we have the second floor, third floor, etc. But in British English, they call that level the ground floor. Again, the floor that is at the same level as the ground outside. That's the ground floor in British English. And then when you go up, you go up to the first floor, second floor, and so on. So when you walk into a building from the street, you enter the first floor in American English and the ground floor in British English. And when you go up the stairs to the first level above the street, that's called the second floor in American English and the first floor in British English. Super confusing, I know, but that's the answer to your question. Ask me anything this month and I'll answer the most common questions from students.
