Hello everyone. Welcome to another episode of Goose Chicks Podcast,
an all women lead show focused on the band Goose,
the community that supports them, and the GMBN scene in general.
I'm Leslie Mack, producer. Our co-host Alexias,
Lebo is not here today. She is already in Athens getting ready
to shoot tonight's show down there. Very excited for her.
But of course, we have our amazing contributors,
Hannah and Chelsea with us.
And today we're going to take a light, take it easy.
I don't know if you can hear from my voice, but it was a long weekend out here on the road.
And so we're going to do some general check-in, some reactions to Goose's Philly
and Cleveland shows, and then of course our regular segments.
But first, of course, brief check-in.
Hannah, how are you doing? I know you got back super late last night,
but how was Cleveland? It was a vibe.
But what are you feeling today?
Yeah, so I am from Ohio, always from Ohio.
And it was just awesome being with my three best friends from college.
They got to hang out with you Leslie and Drew.
That was awesome.
It was just a great overall, had a wonderful weekend.
So thank you to Goose for sort of making that happen.
Exactly.
Hannah, first of the best after parties.
I just want that to be said.
I posted it.
We're all shocked.
Without it, it was like the best vibe, the best, just all of it.
It was so fun.
We were dancing.
We were talking.
We were talking.
We were connecting.
It's exactly what you want from an after party.
And it was really amazing.
So thank you for inviting us.
Yeah, shout out to my friend Martin because he curates the best after party playlists ever.
And it's just a vibe.
And then he brings his own lighting to our Airbnb's when he's with us.
So it's just, yeah, got to thank him.

And I thought they had only played all three Jives, like two or three times prior to Cleveland.
But actually, Mad shout out to the guys who do the, or people who do the Goose B and Trivia Facebook page.
Because they broke down a bunch of stats about how often the Jives have been performed and everything.
And so, I do too.
Yeah, I know.
They're so great.
And they have like a running stats and everything.
My bestie Tyler, he made the cut off barely.
He's on the bear.
So they're just such a cool group.
Definitely follow them if you're trying to learn more about Goose and sort of the trivia stuff.
I actually just posted a Jive related for your question.
And it was my first trivia question I posted there.
So love them.
But this is trivia posted by Dean Nogan, who is one of the admins for that page.
And question was, how many times have the three Jives been played during the same show?
And the answer is six times.
So that includes the Agora show on the case six.
And then also on 8 2022, 11, 13, 21, 5, 8, 21, 11, 7, 19 and 1, 3, 19.
That answer Rachel, who described in the comments that 5, 8, 21 order and sort of gave some of the answers.
And how many times have all three Jives been played in order?
The answer is once.
And that's 11, 13, 22.
So technically, we didn't get that this time because there was California magic in between.
But it was so very special.
It was definitely my first Jive side that day.
So thank you for that. And that alone made Cleveland work, you know, extra special or magical or whatever.
So yeah, I don't know if anyone else has anything else to say about Jive, Tripekka, Jivekka.
Yeah, so I got a Jive too and a Jive Lee at the St. Louis show last year.
But so that was close.
That's the closest I think I've gotten to a Jive Fekka.
But I just wanted to know on the actual songs, you know, I love lyrics.
So I was of course looking at these lyrics.
Jive has already gotten me so many times with the lyrics, but I just want to point out a specific part that really resonates with me,
where it says, I don't care what you say about the rules.
It's going to drop your jaw to see the things I can do.
Soon you'll see you can do them too.
Don't waste your days on the endless race. You know, it's not too late to leave it all behind.
And this to me just really speaks to me because I get so often people saying to me, friends, family, strangers, even like,
I'm so jealous of you. Like you're able to just quit your job and pursue your passions and you, you know,
you have all this time to go follow your favorite band.
And like, I get this all the time and I'm always just like, you know, you can do that too, right?
Like anyone has the power to change your life and make it what you want.
And I think that's what this is talking about is like, you don't have to follow the rules. You don't have to follow what society says.
I know it surprises you that I can do this, but you can do them too.
And it's not too late to leave it all behind.
Just remember that when you're looking at someone else's life for, you know, so-called life that you think it is.
And you know, you're thinking, I wish I could do that. You can people. You can.
So for your passions, it's important.
And I think that's the whole message of this song in particular.
And then that's Jive. One, I guess you call it. And then when you go into Jive 2,
well, the main takeaway here for me is just a little bit goes a long, long way.
And a lot of the song is talking about having an opportunity to do it this way,
or I could change things up and do it a different way.
And it feels like a second part. That's why they're probably Jive 1 and Jive 2.
It feels like the second part of that, right? Like me telling someone like, you can do this too.
And then it actually coming to the point of like, are you going to do something different?
Now's your chance. And just a little bit goes a long, long way.
You don't have to make huge changes either. This could just be small things.
And just living your life more authentically and not feeling like you have to follow the rules or do it a certain way.
So, and then I think Jive Lee is just all instrumental, is it not?
Yeah. And so then it's just the cap, you know, like, so now let's just vibe out.
Yeah. That's how I see this trifecta.
I love it. You always have the best analysis of these things.
This is my first time seeing the Jive fact at all.
I thought it was cool to have Callie Magic kind of in the middle of the between Jive 1 and Jive 2 in this particular set.
Just because I love that song and also like it fits somehow in terms of the narrative of the
Chelsea was just mentioning. And I do have to admit my favorite is Jive Lee.
I love instrumentation music generally speaking, but I just find that that goose is able to take instrumentals to a whole nother level.
And honestly, for most of Jive Lee, I have my eyes closed and I just let my body and my and the sound just like decide how it wants to move through it.
And I really love that about it.
I will admit to being kind of shocked when they started when they went into Jive Lee, I was like, oh my God, they're doing Jive Lee as well.
Like I couldn't quite comprehend at first. And then I was just so excited about it.
But yeah, it was really great. And then just to know that it's only been played in completely, you know, order one to the one time is really interesting.
And this is the closest other than that, I think that they've done. So that's really exciting because a lot of times they'll split into different sets too.
They'll do like Jive 1 and Jive 2 in the first set or actually sometimes they'll do Jive 2 and Jive Lee in the first set and Jive 1 in the second set.
So I've heard that played maybe once or listened to it in some words. But yeah, this was really special.
And I think that was a good note you made Hannah that like, this is such a like fan thing to notice.
And somebody who's like, oh, because you could assume, especially as they go from Jive 2 into Jive Lee, that it's just, oh, they're just jamming that song, right?
It's just an extension of the jam. But you know, all of us are like, oh boy, we're in for a minute.
It's happening. So yeah, so I think that's really interesting about it.
And then they did take on me, which was really great.
A lot of people in the audience had the honey bee ears. And so Peter gave a little nod to them like, oh, for all the honey bees, let's get it going.
And they played honey bee, which was so pretty. And they got coach a new rain stick and presented to him on stage when they called it.
And they called him out to play honey bees. So it was just really and everybody was super just happy. And yeah, it was a cute moment.
So for the honey bee thing, I don't know if y'all know this, but that's a crew that is from Ohio and they get a lot of gooshes together.
But pretty much any show higher goose, you see, you don't that that group's usually there with their honey bees.
So to me felt like it could have been intentional where the guys know that they would that crew would likely be in the audience, shout out to them.
I don't know any of them personally, and I don't even know their crew name, but my friends with my friend, Ohio, was like, oh yeah, I see that at other shows too in Ohio, not just goose.
So that's like a thing. And I thought that was really cool that the guys likely knew that. And so they were like, oh, I'll add that to the list.
Yeah, they definitely were at New Year's. Our New Year's. New Year's I saw.
Because they gave me one and I had one on for like a minute. Yeah, I couldn't keep it. New Year's because.
So they were handing him out. They were handing him out last night because the Lexis had one on. I saw because she was on the round.
I thought I'd go to always find her because I could see her red hair and and and Santa's sticking out, which was cute.
And then they did a chamomile mama on core, which I think based on a show.
Setlist holds on. I have it on my phone. Let me just take a look at it.
Here it is. Yeah, they were not going to play chamom. They were going to play hot tea.
So that was interesting. I also meant to note that the the evil echo literally obliterated a whole half of that sat there,
were supposed to play four additional songs after evil echo, but that just kept going and they per usual lived in the moment and just was like,
F that's that list. We just going to keep this train rolling. So shout out to them for always doing that. I love it. These were great.
Go ahead.
I was speaking of the evil echo. I know you if you all follow us on social media. Leslie Mack has said, you know, I'm a fat evangelist. And so I've been joking.
Okay, if you're the fat evangelist, then I'm an evil echo evangelist because I have an echo on the rose teacher that a fan artist made and I will often try to manifest an echo by wearing rose gear.
And so yeah, the evil echo is from.
And can we just say how on our live last week, I was going talking about the dark goose evil goose, just like more of that please and then that that weekend they came out with the evil echo.
I think I did not stream the shows, but I watched that. Yeah, that song for sure that they posted and it's so, so good.
That's what I'm talking about. Yeah, we got to put this one up. It's too hot to keep to ourselves. And I do think to me, it's like more evolution of the band, right? We're hearing them play with different sounds.
Go deeper into jams in a certain direction and being okay about that. I also thought it was funny because during the Arabalo Osiris event, when the Peter was asked about the blanket that he has that he took from his mom's house.
And I specifically said, yeah, like Philly 22. I needed we went, we went real dark and I had to have a little security blanket.
And so it's funny they're now back in Philly and they go straight into this evil echo. So I feel like Philly brings out, I don't know, something in them. I posted online like no to self. Never miss a Philly show.
Because clearly they bring the heat to Philly. I also want to say the Met was when I say decked out for this. I'll post this on our socials as well. But at the end of the show, they had this group called Cheeto projections. I think it's the name of the group.
And I'll tag them that projected an entire goose landscape on the entire facade of the mat, which is just white. And it has like windows and they had the like goose logo they put together for the shirts for that show that look like the love.
And then you know statue and then the dates and then the middle was just all this like psychedelic stuff. They had like raccoons running through the windows. It was really impressive like a bunch of us just crossed the street and just was standing there like taking it all in.
So I really just pulled out all the stops for them. And it was just it was beautiful. And the staff there was really great and wonderful. And they brought me gummy bears. So I'm, you know, you're always getting snacks.
I always I'm like, I'm just not going to someone's like, I got you girl. And then suddenly gummy show up. So shout out to the staff at the Met as well.
Yeah.
All right for our goose dog segment. We're going to talk a little bit about great blue. Hannah, I think this came from a conversation you had with someone cracked.
Or was it Chelsea somebody had a conversation with somebody about just questioning like, what is great blue and is that a band Peter's in or whatever. But anyway, somebody mentioned it. We were like, well, let's talk about on the show. So we're going to talk about the show.
But I will turn it over to Hannah just give some general facts about great blue. Sure. Yeah, I think it wasn't a conversation I had per se, but I follow a lot of the different chat groups that exist.
And I think people were having a thread about great blues. So I thought it'd be cool to talk about it. But basically, so this is one of Peter's side projects.
And it's a group that he started with him is in high school, which I think is really cool that he sort of stays humble maintains his roots and continues to make music with them and going forward them.
But according to their website, they're a progressive rock quartet. And so it's Peter on guitar vocals, south on bass vocals, Nikon drums vocals and Ethan on guitar keyboards and vocals.
And so their bio says they fearlessly push musical limits with experimental songwriting and intrepid of provision featuring goose's Peter.
I don't know how to say his last name on spot and on spot. This quartet formed during the members high school days 11 years later.
These longtime friends maintain the same useful exuberance, treating an explosive and soaring sonic experience with each show.
And so I also think it's cool that not only does he still do this with his friends, but the other guys of Goose have embraced it and they have learned some of the great blues songs, Goose has a lot of covers of great blues songs.
And so there's actually, according to the interwebs, the Goose has actually covered great blues songs 36 times.
So I think that's pretty cool that the guys have learned their songs.
And I think that's all I have to say about it. I think Leslie, you're going to talk a little bit more about some conversations, Rick and Peter have had about great blues, right?
Yeah, we'll include this a note of course, but there's a great article from relics.com that came out sort of profiling them before drip feels released and before the Radio City music hall shows.
And I just wanted to read this little piece about great blue and Peter.
So by late 2017, Ansba was grinding it out on the road with great blue, enjoying the time with his high school friends, but not getting too much traction with audiences.
This is when Rick extended him an offer to join Goose, but it came with the complication. There's a quote from Peter.
Rick asked if I could play keyboards, but at that time I was exclusively a guitar player.
I told him I'd give it a shot. So I practiced for three weeks while I was on the road with great blue.
I had a mini keyboard and a computer. By my first gig, I could play a few of the songs confidently. Others, not so confidently.
It took a few more months of being in Goose to feel like, okay, I can get through a set and play these songs on keyboards.
My fourth gig was opening for Spafford on tour, and it was my first time playing in front of a real sold out audience.
A very accomplished keyboard player had played on the Goose record, Chris Onright, another Berkeley alum.
And I was like, wow, I hope people don't listen to the record show up and feel disappointed.
End quote. Ansba said a high bar for himself and asked to name an early personal highlight on keys.
He states, quote, it might not have been until the fall of 2019. We were on a very special tour that fall because it was the first time anyone had ever bought advanced tickets to our shows.
And a lot of these small clubs had sold out. I remember we were playing in Columbus, so high all.
And during an all I need jam, I went up to the synth and took a solo, which I had never really done.
At that moment, I was like, wow, I just take a synth solo. He laughs and adds, I still love that recording end quote.
So I just thought it was really great. There's also a lot in this article because Rick says that he had an epiphany in deciding to invite Peter to the band.
He says, I was on an exercise bike in my mom's garage, pedaling super hard and sweating while trying to gain clarity on our situation.
All of a sudden, I had this vision that Peter Ansba needed to join the band, he recounts.
It was a very left field thing because we needed a keyboard player, not a guitar paler.
And he was the leader of his own band. But at the time, I was looking for the excitement of playing music and the basement when you're a kid while your parents are trying to sleep.
I was looking for the magic and wonder that comes with discovery of music.
Then when we crossed paths with great blue, that's what I saw. I was like, shit, I want to go with you guys.
This seems way more fun. So our sands were shifting pretty heavy.
We were playing with some really great musicians, but it's a matter of chemistry and finding the right person who gets what you're trying to do.
I remember there was a moment when we first harmonized together. Everyone's got a unique phrasing and the way that they deliver melodies and it can be hard to connect.
But I remember with Peter, he got it right away and it seemed pretty effortless.
So there you go. I just thought that was really cool. Again, I'll include that.
The entire article is really great and some really great tidbits about just kind of this lead up to the drip feel release and everything.
But I just, yeah, those two things are really cool. And just, yeah, I mean, they do harmonize really specially together.
I always note that even if it's one line that Peter, or even one word that he's harmonizing with it, their blend is really unique and super special.
And since the pandemic added Jeff as the third voice, which we're seeing more and more in goostages now that Jeff is joining in the harmonies.
It's really, really something really, really great. Just another kind of color to goose.
All right. Let's move on to our fan art spotlight and I'll turn this over to Chelsea.
All right. So speaking of evil goose or dark goose, today I want to talk about this old sea apparel.
So this old sea is a jam band and goose focused merch shop run by a Chris, a creative director from Brooklyn, New York.
And Chris's designs break the mold from your typical jam band artwork, instead taking inspiration from music genres like death metal, 90s hip hop and more.
So I came across Chris's work on Instagram. And I actually purchased a shirt the other day, because I was like, this is so dope. I haven't seen anything like it.
The shirt I got is a creatures inspired shirt. It says goose and like a really metal looking font. And then it has some like creepy school creature graphic.
And then at the bottom, it says creatures in the night, they're crawling. Oh, I'm so excited. I haven't gotten it yet, but I'm definitely going to rock it as soon as I get it.
I kind of have a metal vibe to me anyways, like my favorite bar go to is metal themed and I rock their merch all the time that has like almost the same graphic I was looking at it on some of the stuff I already have. So this is right up my alley.
He has more shirts as well, some with silver rising that's El Meg t-shirts and then he does have other graphic teas and hoodies as well. So check that out.
And I wanted to add, I know a lot of people might think this is kind of strange for me because I'm also really about the love and light.
But I just want you all to remember, you can't have light without the dark.
And we need to remember that. So, you know, I think that like dark times are hard times are the period of most growth and that's how we grow and change and learn.
So we can have all those light times as well. So just keep that in mind.
When you're listening to Goose and when you see Chris's amazing work, it's awesome. So follow him or check this out on Instagram at this old see apparel on tic tac at this old see.
And he also has an Etsy shop. This old see.
Awesome. I'll be checking that out for us with like immediately.
I mean, you are that to apparel in my life anyways. So, yeah, I wish people could have seen your face whenever she said that's like it was so priceless.
And you're speaking her love, love is love language. We can start talking about that church.
Anytime that's much as mentioned, I'm into it.
I wanted to, one thing I forgot I was going to do was just kind of name a couple of big favorite songs of goose that goose plays that are actually from Great Blue.
So Doc Brown is a great blues song. Jeff Angborg is a great blues song. Pancakes is a great blues song.
The Wales is a great blues song. Time to flee is a great is a great time to flee. No, no, no. Yeah, that's right. And then lastly, Yeti. Yeti is a great blues song.
So I mentioned that because there's a lot of them that I think are quintessential goose songs now. And obviously they've turned them into something different as goose, but the bones were created during Peter's Great Blue era.
So, yeah, that's. And a note on that. Yeti, this old see just came out before I even wrote or after I wrote these notes with a Yeti shirt.
I think it says he says he's coming for you. So check it out guys.
Every time they play that I say he's coming for Drew because Drew loves Yeti. It's like that's one of his favorite songs. So, yeah, it's really great.
All right, podcast below down with our back team.
Yeah, so one thing we've seen in creating Lee as we hear from folks who are on tour and at shows is, you know, goose is fan base is sort of evolving as they get more and more spotlights and sort of mainstream spaces, like Jimmy Kimmel and all that.
That there's a lack of empathy. Sometimes that shows. I know for me and my friends personally, we saw through a bro do in front of us light up a cigarette.
And I was really disappointed. We didn't feel comfortable saying anything just because they were like, bro, they weren't, they clearly didn't know who goose was. They didn't know any of the songs. And so, like, because my friend was like, Oh, like, if they had been goose fans like that, but maybe it would have been a little bit different.
Like maybe they don't want to miss their favorite song. And I was like, actually, if they were goose fans, I would have been more comfortable saying something because I would have just been like, Hey, man, that's not cool.
And I know other folks in the various threads and everything have had even worse experiences than that. So we're really trying to find different creative ways of incorporating the message of being empathetic and being kind.
And to each other when you're at shows and, you know, gently explaining to people, you know, like, for example, a lot of rail writers have been saying that people are just like not waiting in line and then they're pushing their way up to the front.
And they're just being really sort of entitled about it and not nice to each other. And the thing about that is we actually have a really great rail writing scene where if you just go up and say, Hey, no, I wasn't lying, but this is my favorite song or like, Hey, if they play creatures
or whatever your favorite song is, can I ride the rail just for that song? People will say yes, but it's just that level of respect where you're not trying to invade other people's space and push your way through.
You're actually getting to know the people around you and talking to people and sort of, you know, making sure as you try to enjoy your time, you're not interviewing with other people's ability to enjoy their time.
Right. That's what it's all about. It's like making sure that as you enjoy your show, you're not interviewing with other people.
And so I think long term, actually, someone just asked on a Facebook post if we were going to do dedicated entire episode to this topic of empathy and I would love to see that, but we haven't planned that out in our show now beings yet.
So while we think about that, you know, just trying to spread that message of empathy and love and taking care of each other as we continue our different episodes.
And so I chose a podcast today that's led by a woman and the focus is on empathy and allyship and when you're a leader, because I think part of it too is like, you can want to be empathetic and you can want to spread that message.
But sometimes you don't know how to articulate that in the moment.
And so, as die-hard goose fans, we're sort of leaders of the scene and the people who are sort of frustrated in Facebook spaces and group chats, like they're frustrated, but they don't always necessarily know how to like do something about it in a productive way.
And so that's why I like this podcast because it's called leading with empathy and allyship and it's about when you're sort of in a leadership role, how you can do so in an empathetic way.
And so the podcaster is Melinda Brianna Epler and the podcast bio says join us each week for deep real conversations about how we can all be more inclusive leaders in our workplaces and communities.
And intimate conversations with advocates, activists and allies, Ted Speaker and author Melinda Brianna Epler provides a safety space to learn, build empathy for each other and understand tangible actions we can all take.
And then you can also, it's an interactive podcast somewhere to ours where you can join in live.
So I thought that was sort of a cool aspect of the podcast.
And of course we will share to her podcast and our stuff, if you're interested in checking that out. But yeah, I think it's really cool to think about okay well it's all finding good to say that you're empathetic and you want to be kind to each other out there.
But then how can you actually do that without coming across as like bossy or like especially as women, sometimes when we had an intervene in real time, we get perceived as be bitchy or whatever and so how can we do that.
How can we take action and still have a positive impact in the community.
I love all of that. And it's funny made me think about the fact that I really like just like weaponize the patriarchy and most moments like that and I'll just really dreamy to say some things to these people immediately like right now they need to be
spoken to and he's not rude or anything but he's a big dude and speaks with lots of authority that the patriarchy has bestowed upon him and so I'm just recognizing that and like thinking about like what are the ways that I can, you know, not do that or not make that
my go to and put some more tools on my own arsenal to do that. All right, I feel like that's good. Great show y'all. I'm glad we got to go through all of our things catch up with each other.
We were going to have a little combo about doing the show but I want to let's see it's here for that combo because she's got a lot to share around that because it's Hannah and I both had direct experiences of people like record strangers recognizing us at shows
and it's definitely changed a little bit of how we interact and it's just new to us so I want to talk about that but I want to wait till the XS is here so let's go ahead and close out.
We do want to hear from y'all so we have a voice line set up for all goose chicks at fans and for just anybody that loves the jam band scene and loves goose. You can give us a call at 704-275-3128 so leave us a message and it might get played on the show.
