Hello everyone and welcome to a very special bonus episode of Goose Chicks Podcast
and All Women Lead Show Focus on the Band Goose and the community that supports them.
I'm Leslie Mack, producer and co-host and today we are excited to talk with Becky
Timman who joins us to talk about a new project from Park Design Company,
Work Life Goose Balance, which we're all dealing with right now, Mental Health and a little bit about how she and Peter
on Spot met. Becky, welcome to Goose Chicks Podcast. We're so excited to have you here.
Yay, thank you for having me. I'm really grateful to be part of this experience.
So, so thankful. Becky, who for those who don't know is a trained architectural designer
and Moonlight says a DJ. We're going to get into that a little bit later.
She is gluten free, obsessed with pesto pasta and occasionally dapples in ceramics.
She used to be a ski bum in Colorado and is now enjoying living in Brooklyn with her partner Peter.
So Becky, I gave a little bit of a taste of what your life is like, but you know, tell us a little bit about yourself.
Where are you from originally? And yeah, what kind of work do you do?
Totally. So I was born in Massachusetts and let's see, the type of work that I do now is architectural interior design.
So I work for a small farm in Brooklyn and we are working on restaurants, hotels, pretty much those hospitality categories within those two
of working on a project in Florida, Wisconsin and Tennessee at the moment.
So when I'm not designing furniture, designing spaces, I love traveling.
I love music. And I also hold a really deep respect for the outdoors.
So when it's feasible, I love to go camping, biking, hiking, all that good stuff.
I love it.
Also, I'd like to be here back.
How did you end up in Colorado?
So I was actually dragged out there by my best friend at the time.
She told me to quit my job and move out and be a ski instructor with her.
I called her crazy.
Then I did it.
And it was the best thing ever.
I ended up staying and working out there for an architecture firm.
And I went to a lot.
Yeah.
Awesome.
And so talk, I know you have a ton of passions, a lot of hobbies.
I saw you, you're so artistic and always doing things.
So yeah, what are some things that are really, you know, driving for you right now?
What's filling up that little bit of extra space you might have in your calendar?
Yeah, totally.
So lately I've actually been working more, honing my skills musically.
I've been preparing for this upcoming GJ set that Peter and I are playing together.
It'll be our first time performing together, which I'm really excited for because we've
known each other for a while.
We've sort of played together and messed around together musically, but showing it to other
people and letting other people into our musical space is going to be new and exciting.
So I can't wait for that.
Super exciting.
We're going to get into that in a few questions.
So a lot of our listeners got to know you as part of the Goose community.
I know I was lucky enough to meet you at the New Year's Eve shows in Cincinnati as Peter's
girlfriend.
So we're curious, like, how did you and Peter meet?
And, you know, what was that like?
What's the Becky and Peter backstory?
Totally.
So the Becky and Peter backstory goes back to the fall of 2019.
I was in grad school and I went to my first Goose show.
I couldn't get tickets to, like, any of them over the summer.
I was so bummed.
I finally got one to New Haven.
I don't know if you all will be there, but I ended up going to the show and I was so excited
that I blazer-cut some signs using the laser cutters that my school had to offer.
And I ended up, like, trying to buy a poster, one thing, let's do another.
And I was in the process of buying a poster when Peter introduced himself and we had ourselves
a little merch table chat.
But then we kind of went out separate ways after that.
And it wasn't until about a year and a half later that he reached out again.
We didn't, like, kind of meet up again in between that year and a half, but very briefly.
But, yeah, a year and a half later, we began chatting more frequently.
I love it.
I want to give you a like, if you have any follow-up questions there.
So, y'all met in 2019 or y'all started, so you met in 2019 and then a year and a half,
y'all just kind of met up a few times, so y'all didn't, like, really start officially together.
So, oh.
So, I actually, when we first met, I was very much happily in a separate relationship.
And I think maybe he was working through something.
I don't really know, but that was just not on the forefront of our minds.
I was just sort of, obviously, very tried to do music, but then he was also, like, interested
in, like, my interests because my interests were similar to his.
We both really love the outdoors.
I went to Yosemite that summer.
I actually went on this, like, it was the summer of 2020, COVID summer.
And he was, like, staring on Instagram, I think.
I went on this, like, crazy two-week camping trip where I, like, slept in the tent for,
like, actually, it was, like, two months.
It was two months.
So, I did that, and he was, like, this is crazy.
This girl's, like, going all over the country.
And then I made it to a show in South Farms in Connecticut.
And he was, like, how is this girl at South Farms?
Like, I thought she was at Yosemite last week.
Was it Yosemite last week?
But, um, yeah, let's take a look.
I love it.
I love it.
It's a very smart man.
Very smart man.
Oh, look at that.
Yeah.
It's so cool to hear that.
That's so awesome.
And, um, when, you know, when I was reading about you and stuff, I try not to be, like,
I always say, like, I'm not a goose-stalker.
Like, I really try and give the guys, like, their space and, you know, and let them be
real human beings.
And, um, so when I was reading, you know, about you and your interest, and I was, uh,
and I was just like, oh, wow.
I was like, this is awesome.
I was like, we have a lot in common.
And then when you said that, that's even funnier because, um, Jason stalked me for
you.
That's your husband.
Yeah.
Yeah.
My husband, he stalked me for, and I say that all the time.
He didn't really, but he would, like, always be where I was.
And I was like, how in the world do you know this?
So that's funny to hear you say that.
So, um, but, and we've been together for 20 years.
I'm like, yes, y'all go strong and stuff.
And, um, but that's really cool.
All the, um, all the things that they've done and, um, and being a ski bum.
And, uh, so where were you, like, where were you a ski bum at?
And out in Colorado, where you, which, like, which town or which, which is your favorite?
Well, I lived in Brackenridge for four years.
Uh, so I do really love Brack, but it also is really busy.
Um, so I really enjoyed it.
I really enjoy the smaller mountains as well.
One of my favorite mountains in Colorado is definitely Silverton mountain.
Um, they have a pretty unique skiing, guiding experience there.
Um, also I love Aspen because who doesn't?
It's like, yeah, I mean, it's so beautiful.
I mean, it's Aspen.
Yeah, it's Aspen.
Come on.
Yeah.
So definitely not one as well.
Sweet.
Yeah.
I love to ski.
Sorry to go off subject.
I was like, I was like, oh man, we had, you know, I love that.
So love nature.
Just love, you know, um, I grew up on a farm and, um, so just, I would always be outside camping.
You know, if it was warm weather, if it wasn't freezing, we would, in half the time, we didn't even have a tent up.
We would just, you know, have a sleeping bag and be somewhere out there and always on an adventure.
So that's, our earth is very important.
I truly believe that and I know that we'll get into later about, you know, y'all's project on the yard doing, but I absolutely love that and the empathy because I don't.
It's, we'll get into it later.
I don't want to go ahead and show my eyes.
Yeah.
Well, I did want to ask.
Yeah, you know, so this is interesting because you, you know, your time with Peter's also been the time when Goose has kind of exploded onto the scene.
So I can imagine that's been an interesting time to be dating someone in a band as, as this, you know, huge meteoric rise.
They've had an amazing couple of years since, you know, their, their breakthrough in 2019 and Peach Fest.
And so I'm wondering, you know, first time we talked, you mentioned to me, there's like this misconception that you're going to just be at every show.
And I wanted to just give you, yeah, like, of course, that's not feasible.
You have a whole career, as you said, you're working in very high pressure, you know, industry is, I mean, designed for hospitality is probably like, you know, a lot of people are working on it.
And so, you know, the way that we're working on it is that we're working on it.

And so, you know, we're working on their dreams
and continue what they're doing
and to have a partner that is supportive
in every way and to be, you know,
I'll be there.
I'll wait for you because it does mean a lot.
And it, I did, I had that.
And so, you know, you have a lot of trust in the person
when you're not, you know, close and you're far away.
And it just speaks to how beautiful, you know,
that both of you are.
Because I know that both of you are, you know,
that you have a lot of trust in the person
when you're not, you know, close and you're far away.
And it just speaks to how beautiful, you know,
that both of you are.
Because I know that both of you are.
Because I know that Peter just has an absolutely beautiful soul.
And I was talking about it earlier.
Just all the shows that I've been to in the last two months.
And not one person has thanked their crew.
Not one person has thanked, you know,
and has reminded the crowd to be careful and safe
and watch out for people that are around them.
And to, you know, and just all the wonderful people
that Peter is always reminding us to do at shows.
And, you know, not any of those different bands have done that.
And I'm just like, wow, you know,
the joy that we take out of those,
the take out of the shows.
And it just was very shocking to see.
I'm just like, oh, not everyone does that.
I thought that everyone did that.
So it's really, it's really beautiful to hear y'all's stories
and to hear how, you know, how being a part
and how it does strengthen the relationship.
And so.
And we appreciate you, you know,
lining him to us for a short period of time.
We get to enjoy, you know,
Peter's pretty brilliant sound on the road.
Very generous.
Yes.
So I want to switch gears a little bit and get to some good stuff.
I want to talk about Park, you know,
your design company with Peter.
You know, what made you both decide to create this collaborative
collaborative space and, you know,
what are the goals with that work that you're doing together?
Yeah, that's a great question.
So back in the summer of 2019,
Peter actually saw a presentation given by J.
Blakesburg who has since now become a good friend of ours,
but back then it was sort of Peter's first time working with him
as a photographer and J spoke a lot about how,
well, just to explain to the listeners,
J. Blakesburg is a long time photographer for the Grateful Dead.
He's known for taking some of the most iconic shots of Jerry,
Bob, all the dead members,
and he went on the road with them and sort of grew up in a way,
his career out of the dead,
and then he's also since really established himself in the on
professional space of photography.
So what J spoke up was how, back in the day, you know,
without cell phones, without digital technology,
people were really present at shows in a way that is just not
tangible today, and he really hoped that there could be a way
in which we could generate more presence, more connectivity
between the performers and the audience,
and I think just more like feeling, like a lot of shows,
people are viewing the entire show through their phone,
and it's definitely not the same experience that the artist has,
you know, if they're just watching the phones.
So J and Peter were thinking about maybe making a sticker
together, and then Peter was like, oh, why don't I call out my
friend Becky? She's our graphic designer.
And then Peter and I worked on the sticker together,
and we were like, oh my gosh, wait, this is so fun.
I've never really collaborated with someone of a different medium,
but who is also so creative, and we both really enjoyed that
experience that we decided to work more together.
And so we sort of started as really seedling of an idea
where the sticker has now sort of turned into really, I guess,
unique project between us and also a way for us to connect with
other people in the audience, and give back more.
So we can talk a bit more about this iteration, if you'd like.
Yeah, for sure.
That's amazing.
I love that J was involved.
J for those who are listening is going to be featured in this Capron
special El Guist Times.
So there's a big article with him and interview.
I'm really excited to read it when we get up there.
So the latest park design drop is out there.
You can pre-order it through actually the 12th.
This is going to come out on the 10th.
So you have two days, if you're listening right now to this.
Go and do your pre-order.
I did mine today.
So, Hazah.
Yeah.
What can you tell us about this latest design and what's the theme,
kind of what drove the creation of it?
Yeah, definitely.
So we, I mean Peter had a begging for me to do a designer for a while,
and we moved.
I started a new job and finally I was like,
okay, I'm settled, I can do this.
But this design, we wanted to reach out into nature a little bit more.
So we focused on, I guess, this iconic image,
the first image of planet Earth that they took from space.
And then the copy for the design, empathy is everything.
That momentum has always been part of our relationship.
And it wasn't until we realized that the people,
the astronauts who went out to space had no intention of taking a photo of the Earth.
They actually are going out to investigate the moon and take photos of the moon.
And sort of this like star and dipitous opportunity came about where they were like,
oh my gosh, wait, like we have to capture this.
And that star and dipitous moment, that like flash of like,
oh my gosh, like looking inward on where you came from really reminded me of the empathetic moments
that we can experience within ourselves, whether it's for other people,
whether it's empathy for the planet, whether it's empathy for ourselves.
But I think sometimes people like turn the dial down on listening to,
like it's easier to just like go with your brain,
think about what's in front of you, whether it's like all these emotions swirling about,
empathy might not be in that equation, but it's so important to the fabric of my life.
Because sometimes it's not natural for me.
Sometimes I could be very empathetic about some things,
but other things don't come easy for me.
And so in my meditations and in my practice,
I have to work harder at keeping that empathy super strong
because I find myself being way more grateful, way more mindful,
and just more conscientious of people, things that are on me.
I love that.
Well, one empty is everything.
And also it's such a piece of connective tissue that we can find within each other is empathy.
And so I really resonate with that.
And I think it's also, you know, so much of what we get, you know,
those of us that go to so many shows, like this one, go to GoToGo shows,
is that connectivity, that connection with each other.
And it's so alive in this space together.
So I see a nice through line there that, you know, really I can pick up on it.
And everyone here can pick up on that as well.
So you chose Greenpeace at the recipient for the proceeds from this drop.
What made you select them?
I mean, obviously the connection between the picture of the earth
and them taking care of the earth.
But what else, you know, kind of move you all to make sure that they got some, you know,
the proceeds from this one?
Yeah, so one of the things is that Peter has been incredibly environmentally active,
I think for a while now.
I mean, he was in college when he first heard of Greenpeace
and has always really enjoyed the organization.
And then we also recently took some time off to go vacation in a warm place
and we were snorkeling and we ended up seeing a sea turtle
and sort of was able to follow it along in his journey, like how to see.
And it was so moving.
I mean, having, like you say, like a connective moment, that tissue
between our human selves and the natural world.
I mean, in Brooklyn, I'm like, oh, like a weed.
Beautiful.
It is not the same.
And so really seeing nature and it's such a beautiful form really pushed us to think,
oh my gosh, like we have to preserve this.
We have to do so much more than we're already doing to protect this environment
that really cannot protect itself, try as it might.
It means all of our health.
And so it became the obvious answer for where we're going to put the profits for this drop
because that's what's really important to us.
That's beautiful.
It's so awesome.
I live in Little Mount area.
I don't know if you've ever heard of Mayberry from the Andy Griffith Show.
A lot of people under like 35 kind of haven't heard of it.
And so, and people, I'm 38 and some people haven't even heard of it my age.
But around here, it's absolutely beautiful in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains
and we're 10 minutes, 15 minutes from the Appalachian Trail.
So, you know, we don't have as much as much littering and stuff.
And, you know, when I go to bigger cities and just seeing all the trash everywhere.
And even when I see a piece of trash here, I'm just like, really?
Really?
That's, you know, we should just be more kind to earth and to pick things up.
And how hard is it just to, you know, if you don't see a trash can to put a plastic bottle
back in your car and just take it with you and take the trash and throw it away.
And I've even gotten to the point to where it's gotten so bad that I will literally
at friends' houses, I was telling Leslie this, I went and spent the night,
or we had a weekend where we were all doing stuff.
And so, I was like, do y'all recycle?
And she was like, yes, we were cycling over here.
And I was like, okay, awesome.
Because I've gotten to the point to where I will have a bag and we'll take my recycling
home with me because it's just gotten overwhelming and just seeing people that
it really, like, I don't know, maybe I'm just like OCD about it and stuff,
but we just need to do so much to help the earth.
You know, there's just so much trash everywhere.
And just the thought of, you know, then taking trash out to sea and putting it,
you know, just dumping it out there, like third world countries will or China will
and stuff and, you know, it's just a very sickening thought.
So it's a beautiful, beautiful charity that y'all chose to put that towards.
And I just say thank you for me for doing that.
That's very, very, very important and very awesome.
Thank you.
Those are such kind words.
And it's so true what you say about, you know, Peter being so environmentally
conscious, I remember at Red Rocks, he literally asked that you should take
three pieces of trash with us at the end of the show.
And I was like, oh, wow, like, I've never heard a performer make such a direct ask
of an audience like that.
And it was like, oh, everybody just started just, oh, let me get my three pieces of
trash to take with me.
And it was a simple ask, right?
But just hearing it from the stage, it meant so much to everybody to receive it and be like,
oh, I can do that.
And so I feel like it's an invitation to show up more authentically in spaces.
And it's rare to find that.
So yeah, I love all of that.
So this drop, as we said, everybody who's listening, go, there'll be a link on the show
notes, make sure you go and order from this drop.
It's PA-RC.net.
You can see the drop right on there, but we'll have a direct link as well.
And you have to do the 12.
So get on it, make your orders, do your pre-orders and get them in.
What's next for Park?
What's the larger vision?
If there is one yet or how are things shaping up for you all?
Yeah, I mean, I think one of the things that are really exciting about it is, I mean, I've
always wanted to align more of my work with a nonprofit.
And I think that one thing that's really challenging nowadays is that through our different avenues
of news, whether it's through social media, the TV, the internet, we're just getting bombarded
with like the world is ending, climate change is imminent, you know, whatever.
And it can be really overwhelming.
At least I find it to be very overwhelming.
And then sometimes you're going to feeling like, well, what can I even do to make a difference?
And so I think for Park, it's been really helpful to just say, okay, like, I'm not going to change the world, but I am going to make this step for doing one small thing, like donating this to an organization that's protecting the environment, promoting biodiversity, saving lands and waters.
And so I would really love Park to do more of that.
And through other initiatives, maybe, maybe if not, you sure, maybe it's something else next time, but I do also have a friend that is the owner of a vintage clothing store and is also working on textile upcycling.
And so I would love if it's feasible to align our passion project with her career and sort of work on textile recycling in addition to selling garments so that they are more of a circular process and we're not contributing to whatever is going to happen in the landfill.
I love that upcycling for the win. Fantastic. Yeah. So you mentioned you gave us a little tease earlier, but the day folks will hear this interview.
You'll be DJing the after party for Friday night of Goose's Capron. Can you tell us all about Rivka Ruth and space panther like how long have you been DJing and, you know, what can folks expect that end up there for this special set. We're so excited.
Thank you. Yeah, I'm really excited to do this. I mean, I have been sort of DJing and exploring the art that is DJing for a couple of years now.
The same friend that I mentioned previously. She owned a vintage clothing store in Providence and she also uses the platform. It's two of them really my friends, Charlotte and Danielle. You can find them.
I'm just going to do a shout out here at the nest in Providence, because they are fabulous women who are doing really important work in a small state.
And they also have the use of space has been just clothing store thrift store as a community space and so they'll host various community events from knitting clubs, ditch bitches, all these different things, mending your clothes that we don't, you know, throw out that pair of jeans that you're ripped.
You can actually mend it yourself and, you know, reuse them, re-wear them again. And she would throw these events and some are more party like than others. And so she would have me come in and DJ for friends, community members, whatever.
And that's sort of how I got my start and was really excited about it. And then Peter and I, when we started seeing each other, we had explored here there, our musical interests.
And yeah, we had a lot of fun. So this is the first time that we will be playing together.
He'll be doing sin and I'll be DJing. Rif Karuth is my Hebrew name. So I'm really excited to also bring this identity into the goose space because, yeah, it's just, I guess, a new venture. So I'm really glad that you guys are going to be a part of it.
Yeah, it's fantastic. What's the vibe going to be like? Yeah. Yeah. What's it going to be like? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I DJ house, mostly, but disco, techno, tech house.
I don't want to give away too much. Don't give away too much. Just little taste is good. But make, let everybody be surprised and experiencing it.
It's going to be my 5 p.m. You know, so bring your dance and shoes and, you know, be sure you wear layers so you can peel some off as you start just wet and dance.
Yeah. I mean, it's going to get pretty spicy. So I am so excited, just super excited. I love when you said house music. I was just like, yes, and I used to live.
I went to school, did a study abroad in France and well lived in Jwan Lepa. And so, you know, over there you hear house music all the time. You don't hear anything else.
And pretty much. And so I just, I miss it here. It's hard to, it's hard to find like the good house music. It's definitely a dive that you have to take to get there and go through.
Not a lot of not so good music to get to the good music. So I might have to bug you on the side. Becky and be like, Hey, you know, what good music? What do you suggest?
And so I'm super excited to hear you to hear you DJ this weekend. Oh, it's this weekend. I keep thinking like it's months off.
No, it's like coming up. Exactly.
It makes me more excited. Yes. So, so I'm sure, but excited. Yes, everyone's excited. I think it's going to be a great time. Of course, it's going to be fantastic. So aside from obviously we had a few dates to the Cap Run, this is coming weekend.
Will we see out on tour in the coming months? What are you going to fit a few times and we'll get to see you out there? Yes, definitely. So yeah, I'll be there Friday and Saturday for the Cap Run. Maybe Sunday haven't decided yet. And then I will be at the Boston show.
I don't know if I will be at any other shows. I might have some family members going to the Nashville show.
And then down the line, maybe I will be at summer camp, but that's all the way out in May. But they're, I mean, they're just crisscrossing the country.
Yeah, they're going all over the place. Yeah, it's. And all those bus tours. I mean, they're like going to bed and they wake up like nine hours away. You know, so I'll bless all of the people that go from place to place. I mean, that is impressive.
It is. I can't even, you know, just going, just going six days to do photography when I went from like Richmond to Atlanta to New Orleans. I was just on day four. I was like, how do these guys do this? How do they do this for weeks on ends and months on end?
And I'm just, this is my hat is off to them, more than my hat is off to them because it's absolutely impressive that they can do this and keep their sanity and, you know, and still have lives outside and have time to, you know, have time to even spend
in that sleep because I know that I'm ready to sleep for days when I get home and they don't have days. They only have a few days to enjoy. And then they have to go back out and doing it. So, whoo. Yeah, that's a, that's definitely a difficult one. And then this is very
important. So, I mean, I'm just going to start around the team that they're lucky to work with. And so being a part of that team, I mean, they are just close like family. And so it becomes just a really nurturing atmosphere where everybody wants the other person to succeed.
And so I think it's a really important thing to see all the different components that come together because there is just so much more than me. See, I mean, people are working left and right and offer this. I mean, like, I'll give the South pouring of love and talent to the community. So it's really special.
And I think we were lucky enough to have Naveet on the show a couple of weeks ago. And it was so great to just hear his story and how he said one of the things he said it really stuck out for me is like, I didn't even know this was a job. I didn't even know this was a possibility. And so, you know, just just knowing so many people have had that experience working with goose or ending up working with goose thinking like, Oh, I didn't even know this was what my vision was for my life. And here I am like living the dream that I didn't even know I had. And so, it's so amazing.
And it's so great to see. Well, we don't want to keep you too long and also Alexis and are literally hitting the road tomorrow. Yes.
Where can folks follow you and follow your work? Want to make sure that we include all of that in our, yeah, in the show.
Well, so I'm not doing the best job of updating my website at the moment. Duty calls in other ways, but I try to put stuff on Instagram here and there. And then the other thing is, is that if you do see me at a show to anyone listening and to you guys also, I really do love it when people stop and say hi.
I love having conversations with audience members, whether you know me, whether you don't know me. It's really beautiful thing that we get to connect over music and not having music in person during COVID just make me feel even more grateful that now we are able to go to show as we are able to have
us empathy for one another. And so I really encourage everyone to say hi and I hope to see you at a good show sometime soon.
Thanks so much Becky. Thanks for joining us again. We're so grateful to you. And, you know, we'll see, well, we'll see we have Carus right on Friday.
Yeah, looking forward to seeing you out on the road. It was so great to meet you at New Year's and we got to have a great conversation about a little bit about empathy and how different the vibe that goose is compared to other shows and how special that is.
So thanks for saying yes to come join us and have this great conversation. We're so thankful.
Oh my gosh. Thank you guys for having me. I can't wait to do this again.
Yes, very soon. Thanks so much. All right.
Well, we want to thank Becky Chairman for joining us again. What an amazing conversation. I have so many things to think about, just even the concept of thinking about time in three different ways is really like, oh, I got to, I got to sit with that for a minute and really think about it and super excited.
So again, as we mentioned, make sure you go to the park website and get your pre order of the empathy is everything pocket T is available. Now I'm pre-order through the 12 so do not waste your time. Get out there and place that order link is in the show notes.
