Telling spike to like wake up or like pay attention and he's
asleep. He's got an eye mask on and that that cracked me up for reasons. I couldn't quite yeah comprehend
It's got like because it looks like a spike mannequin for a second, you know, yeah
So he wakes up and then he does the thing where he's not trying to hurt them, but he is accidentally hurting him

And then meanwhile fey appears from behind and uses like this stun
perfume thing to knock out a third hijacker

Uh, and then he sees Spike walking by and decides to just pay the money and then hurriedly
Um runs off to me um intercept spike
Um, it's he just decides that he's gonna pull out a knife and charge down spike
And spike does that thing. Yeah
He does that and spikes like nah, a pickpocket

Um, yeah
What was that about is very weird

I think like there's a time and a place for his
Nonchalant fight style
Yeah, right. Is that where you're getting at John? We're like, it was sort of just like I guess if someone tried to run me through
with a dagger
My first thought wouldn't be like

Spike treats it like a streets of rage character and just kind of casually moves out of the way just shuffles up a plane and um
The rock all falls down and he's very excited by spikes abilities and decides to beg him to teach
Uh, beg spike to teach him judo and kung fu and spike eventually gives in um
And uh, he explains to him that he's not
Using strength to fight but fluid emotion and does the basically the Bruce Lee be war on my friend of thing
Um, which is pretty cool considering we've had
Spike reference Bruce Lee a bunch of times. So he's very much the Bruce Lee archetype
Um
Rocco is trying to figure it out
But um doesn't really get it and then a bunch of bad guys show up with a spaceport looking for him
And he just legs it um, he hands spike a package and says meet me at I think it was a church the next day
Chapel or something like that and then he's off
Um, which is a very mysterious moment
But like spike seems to just kind of run with it um
And the bebop jet is complaining to spike about fey and um, he's like she's just run off and she's not really telling us when she's gonna come back which
Is an issue with a lot of women I find um, he's uh been researching a bounty um and the next one is a lad named
Piccaro was it Piccaro?

Um, who stole something called a gray ash plant
Uh, Spike sees that Rocco is part of that crew and that the package he was given is basically the same plant
Which he shows to jet and everyone's very cool
And like why was it cool Jeff?
I think what less the you know, I recognize that guy but more I guess the backstory about the plan
Like I think it's very I the thing I like so much about cowboy bebop is the little fiction that they it's the sci-fi world building fiction that they do
Um, where you know, this was about like some fucking Venus plant that like
They grows and people make uh an antidote for Venus virus. What was it called Venus flu or something like that? I forget
I like Venus virus

like
You know obviously you got to suspend your disbelief about even
Thinking about stepping foot on Venus, but uh, yeah, they figure there's like floating like I love
I love how you see those islands and you're like what is that about and then like later in the episode they come back to and explain it
That's like that's such a nice way to draw you in and then satisfy
Everything is so cool and there's and you know, you've got 23 minutes to like
Really expertly
disseminate that narrative and like I'm just very impressed with the storytelling that they are able to accomplish in such a short amount of time
Not to mention they're able to like do uh, you know, like a caper
Uh, all throughout as well and
Yeah, I just I love it. This is the shit. I love I also think it's been it's just sort of saying that like the like the background art and
cowboy bebop is usually of a very high standard. Yeah, this episode is fucking
gorgeous
Like it's good because

So uh
So they have the plant basically um and jet notes that they are worth one of them is worth tens of millions of rule long
Because they're used in a medicine that will cure blind lifts called a blindness called
It's called venous sickness but for venous virus venous virus now that Jeff said that so
I'm now sucks. I get it
Uh
Faye is sent to track down Piccaro and uh spike goes off in the swordfish too to
Kind of like investigate a ruined shell in the desert
um
He encounters a woman hiding there and uh, she basically pulls up and uh and a gun with a gun and holds him down at gunpoint
And spike just throws his hands up and is
Trying to prove to her that he's not a criminal
And as they have in the standoff the woman kind of stumbles um and he catches her and shows that he's not really a threat to her
Um, he says he's looking for Rocco and she's immediately very happy that um
Someone knows who Rocco is and presumably is his friend
Um, and she says that she's Rocco sister Stella
I I feel for this girl. I felt I felt forever
I was like, oh, she's some real tragic about her
Yeah, she's also very like a calm demeanor that is
Very disarming for someone who's clearly sick
Also took me a second to realize she was in fact blind
Yeah, they don't really make a big deal of it until later on
But if you look at the way her eyes are drawn
There's some tells there that show you that is
She's her eyes eyes not all that it's they do that actually do that anime affair a bit
They have people's pupils not reflect light. So they're just kind of
Sort of dull. It's kind of interesting. I've seen it in a couple of shows
And it's and certainly the the misdirection of her like, you know, I'm pointing a gun at spike. I was sort of like, well, that's yeah
Yeah
Um, so she's his sister
um and uh spike learns that she has this Venus virus and is completely blind
And then she shows him a music box that Rocco sent her
And it's just all part of like a as well as meeting her
You also kind of learned that Rocco isn't good dude. He's just looking out for her
Um, he's he looks at this a music box that um was sent to her and inside is the gray ash seeds
Um, he realizes Rocco basically only stole the plants. So he could cure his sister's blindness
Um, which is when you kind of realize all right this guy's all right. He's he's not he's not a
Just a criminal
Rocco meanwhile is caught gone
I was gonna say a regular villain
Just a regular villain not oh no, that's extraordinary villain
Um, Rocco is caught by Piccaro in a bathroom while he's taking a piss
It's quite funny the way it happens. He's like taking a piss and there's one dude next to him and he realizes is
One of the dude and then like he just was great. So I'm dead by people um in that toilet
Um, they interrogate him and beat him up and like stab his face with a burning cigar
Um, but do you have a Rocco does not give up um any information on on his sister or the plant or either like that
That is up until actually on the plant. Sorry. That is up until they mentioned his sister
And then he agrees to lead them to spike who has the plant
I I love that one of this guy's thugs is basically like grandpa Joe from Willy Wonka
Yes, I know I know the one. Yeah, the guy with the open shirt
Yeah, the open shirt like real long nose like and kind of gray beard and just like he's like I'm doing this for 85 years whatever
How is your dad's good
He reminded me of the
The first fix that you find in Cyberpunk 2077 Dexter Dishon
Oh, yeah, he's got he's got to go back to that man
Lucy. Yeah, good news man. It's it's coming back out again
Yeah, I got it loaded. I think it's I think it's the glasses and the big cigar that he's got that makes me think of him
Yeah, um, yeah
Uh, Faye meanwhile is trying to track down picker. Oh, and it ends up being a bit of a wild goose chase um, and she's been set up
Uh, so she decides to hide her back to jet and spike um Rocco. Yeah, she kind of like injures many people
Yeah, I mean in the in the course of her finding out that she's in the wrong spot
Yeah, she's just shooting a bunch of people. She's punching a bunch of people at a bar
Which everyone in our boss seem like the deserved it
Probably being a bit Larry towards her
Um
I like that scene a lot because it like it's one of the first scenes where you kind of realize oh wait
Faye is like a badass as well
Like usually if she has other ways around it she'll use them
But in this scene, it's like she gets pissed off and she just
Letterip and it's it's class. It's so cool. Yeah is is really cool
Um Rocco and Spike meet at the chapel area and spike um basically reveals that he's a bounty hunter
Which puts Rocco's guard up and he's like oh shit, you're here to get me and then um
Spike says that he knows that he's got the plant to cure his sister Stella's blindness at which point
Um Rocco starts to realize that he's not a bad guy either
And he's not trying to capture him and he tells Spike to run
but um
Piccaro's going ganks surrounds them all um and then Rocco is like space life. We've you've got the plant leave leave Spike out of this
Um, and when they in the when they seem to suggest that they won't leave Spike out of this Rocco
lunges for a gun
Um that one of them is holding and that gives Spike enough time to kind of roll out the way and get behind some cover
And thus commences a shootout
Um where Rocco's running around with the plant the gray ash plant and uh
Spike is taking shots to try and thin out the crowd
Um
It's all going a bit back and forth up until fate arrives with uh the red tail
craft and starts firing at everyone which is a big swing in their favor
So I'm knocking pillars to the ground and stuff, which is I really liked when she appeared and it's like pissed off still
Yeah, that was cool
Yeah, and then jet also shows up in the hammerhead and is like all right
And I guess we're not doing subtlety here
And everyone just starts unloading on all these people down there
Um one of the gang members takes uh on Rocco in in combat like does this thing ways running at him
But Rocco remembers what Spike taught him and just does this cool like fluid motion
Um, parry that sends this dude on the flying on the floor which is a great moment to I don't it's one of those moments
Since the first time I saw it when I was when I was just a little baby
It has always stood out really clear in my mind and I don't know why I think the way it just like
flashes back to him doing it
Like Spike doing it and then he kind of incorporates them so just something real
Real cool about it. Cool real cool. Yeah
Um, but yeah, it's it's a moment where like he does it and then he turns to look at um Spike
Um, and he's like excited
Um that he's done it and Spike is giving him the thumbs up and they're like and their buddies and that's new
That's when I knew he was gonna die. Yeah, and in that moment. Yeah
Yeah, in that moment as he's giving the thumbs up to Rocco you just see a bullet like penetrate through Rocco
And the music just cuts. Yeah, like everything shifts
And he and Rocco falls for the floor
It's it's a really effective death scene
Because I don't like this character and I still felt sad
Yeah, I like it when I was I'm totally in line with you when he and Spike like had that kind of
Little back and forth going on where he sort of wore down the ice of spike a little bit. Yeah
And he's doing it. Yeah, no, it was it was it was definitely you still deserve to die when we were happy
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, fuck them, but like you know
That that slight moment a bit of empathy. Yeah
Yeah, I forgot that this happens and I was like caught me off guard as well
Um fake honors picker. Oh and force him to surrender and basically everyone stop shooting
Um Spike runs over to see if he can help Rocco, but realize this is way too late and he's on his final breath of life
Before he dies Rocco asks Spike that um if they hadn't met earlier. Do you think they'd be friends?
And Spike killed me. Yeah, that was rough
Oh, no, it killed Rocco
Okay, okay
You know as funny as uh spikes like hold on Rocco don't die on me and just like runs away like with no real
Like he's like yeah, I'm gonna go get it
You know, he's like I'm gonna go get a doctor, but no spike was just running away. Yeah
I mean, you know, okay Jeff give us your best spike speakl go for it
Oh the dubbed version I have not worked on it at all. So I like again these things take time
You know what I'm capable of
So you realize like it takes a bit to workshop stuff. I don't think you ever
Delivered on your promise for an impression of me Jeff all the way back
John, it's tough. You're you're a tough one
I've had enough people to impressions of me to not believe that's true

He's just sort of like well, I'm not sure we're gonna go over there like he just has like that has a kind of

So later that night spike goes to visit stellar in the hospital where she's about to go undergo surgery to repair her
I say and she thinks that Rocco arranged the operation and he's gonna come visit her soon
But then she realizes from psych spike
Not really saying much and and the way he's kind of behaving
That Rocco's oh
There's a line and it kills me where she's like oh, no, is he in jail? And it's like oh fuck dude
Ian in jail my face and find out
Yeah, we're laughing at that Jeff. It's a very touching moment
Yeah, it is cheek yeah
Another touching moment is uh, she asked spike what Rocco was really like
Um, because she didn't really
Know how others thought of him. She just knew what he was what she thought of him and spike replies that um
She knows him actually better than anyone now. He was a terrific guy
Which is sad right um, I mean she also did say like oh
He died probably if he's hurt. It's because he did a bad thing or something like that, right? I mean
She knew she knew she knew
Stella knew
Um, spike uh eventually starts like a little a little fruit stand um and buys an apple
Any any takes a pie out of it and then sees like the spores that were responsible for Stella's blindness are
falling again
Yeah, no panic what is it? Is anyone panicking over that like I feel like I was like oh, that's pretty
But isn't it going to blind everybody? Yeah, no, it's only a really small number of people that blinds
Yeah, okay, what else do you know about Venus sickness?
Well, just as much as the episode told me Jeff
Yeah
When we really get Jeff sometimes he like
He crutches down off camera and he just did that
Yeah, they're a little belly slap, you know, it's one of those belly slap laughs
So, I think this is why
People think that we're really mean to you Jeff because they can't see the delight on your face whenever yeah, I think

When they go around and do like little interviews with earth people about who Edward is

What where do you fall in this time?
I find ed to be a bit of an annoying character
um, I don't I tend to find the
overly energetic hacker character to be quite
Grating. It's one of the reasons why I don't like Futaba and
Persona 5 but
Futaba is maybe on the edge of
Acceptability for me, but Edward is one of those like annoying characters
But I do see the the hackers influence in the overall episodes. So I think Edward Edward going forward
I think Edward going forward is more is better character as part of a crew than the Edward introduction character

Oh, Puk is also a bit annoying
Okay, but I I find Puk annoying
But also kind of funny at times like Puk can be quite funny. Yeah, I think Puk is funny

Overall like I was super down with this character and

The yeah, the episode begins in orbit above earth where satellites artificial intelligence is just talking about being sad and alone

connects to other satellites in the area and kind of activates them and then they just start firing lasers onto the
The earth earth surface
But they're not doing anything weird. They just kind of like imprinting carvings on onto the surface of the earth like almost crop

So but for the longest time it is unclear. I mean Edward is presented
Like ostensibly as a male character for a lot of times. This is very in terms of how they're drawn, but um
Well for the sake of discussion, we'll just refer to Edward as a female which we learn about at the end
Um, so she hacks into the earth gate server where she spots the beebub is scheduled to land for a vacation
Um, and she's like super excited as if she knows what the beebub is
And then a bunch of like rock showers here area and and like
In a comical way toss her up around and her into the air and all of her equipment. Just goes flying and that kind of shit
So she's not having a great time on the earth surface
Um
On the beebub everyone is kind of like listening to a news program and Jeff is doing his bonsai tree upkeep failures
Like filing her nail phase filing her nails and spike is like cleaning his ship
Which is a nice little slice of life's moment on the beebub which we don't get to see much off. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. All right. I liked it. Yeah
And the anchor is explaining that there's an 8 million woo long bounty on
Place by the earth government on whoever is responsible for hacking into the satellites and causing them to draw these
These weird animal markings on the surface of the earth
Um, and there is a psychic on the program as well um, who is
Being big old conspiracy theory-ish
Person which is quite funny. Um, he's trying to convince everyone. I really recognize that guy's voice
But I couldn't yeah, like that's not familiar
Which he was like little nicky. Yeah, yeah
Yeah, like there's that that voice is used in a lot of places where it's always like and I'm not sure why we're gonna do it like that kind of
Yeah, I can even think of a couple of old loony tunes cartoons that has this like
Hey, welcome, you know, yeah, it's some sort of like person-opening that front door to a creepy mansion
Yeah, can you can you do that impression?

Well, like the little nicky thing. Yeah, the one that you just did

It's funny because we we had this arc on bombcast for a little bit where people were doing little nicky

Spike decides to pause on the bounty option. He's basically like fucking hacker suck and I don't like chasing him
I'm just annoying which I was on the other side of being like, you know what chasing hacker episodes do sound she

It's it's kind of interesting though because it's like unless spike
Unless there's some mortal danger
Spike doesn't really want a partner. No, no, he's he wants a adrenaline rush out of his his bounties
Ed meanwhile is just like messing around with a remote control toy
remote control toy which he crashes at like a plane and then earth police department arrives to investigate
a hacking attempt from that area and he takes control or or she
She takes control of
Hit their ship his ship the cops chip and um flies it around and crash is it just like
With the toy which is funny just so awesome. Yeah
Did you see the thing about the jet by the way? I know I just want to say also I've got hard out in like 15 minutes
So I'm not gonna like believe this. But do you see that there is just a jet that's gone missing where the pilot
hopped out and that's just

The cops the cops are very very upset at this
But Ed then hacks into the bebop as spike is sleeping to find out if the crew is after this
To find out that the crew is after this outlet
She she's like hacking around an iron's barking at the computer and she does the funny face like big smiley evil hacker thing
Which is just cute and I'm freaks out a bit
And the bebop lands in the water and they basically say fey will inspect the antenna
Which what is what the hackers could have used and jet will find information about the hacker themselves
um and then they're flying over like the earth area and fey learns that there's like a hundred active transmitters in the area
So she's basically looking for a needle hacker in a haystack hacker
Um, and uh, there's a defunct train depot as well um and j
Uh, jett is walking around learning about the hacker most likely to be radical Edward
But I can't get an accurate description people are like it's an alien. It's a child. It's a
Uh, yeah, it's a uh
Uh, what else is it a gay person?
Uh, it's a a a bunch of different things and they're like oh and he's like okay cool
And yeah, I just love like each of them has such a distinctive design and setting
Yeah, oh, yeah, it's great. It's so good. It was it was it was very like West Anderson
Right like yeah, it was yeah totally great like a lot of like uh, you know
Environmental storytelling just in that frame of just like this is the slice of life of this person. Yeah, loved it
Edward hacks into the kind of satellite outlet server and
Is is able to discover that no one's hacked into it
And here's a voice inside the satellite and the satellites just like um, I'm a central processing unit on the D135
Artificials uh satellite and Edward is just I'm gonna call you MPU because it sounds like CPU, but it's fun
Um and MPU says that um, they've been making their land carvings to recreate Nazca lines
Um, after the gate accidentally destroyed Earth's landscape. So I was trying to restore some
Like kind of history and personality into the Earth landscape, which is a really cool revelation
Really really cool. Yeah
Yeah, Edward asked if she can draw something and then the earth police jam the signal and Edward loses contact with the with MPU
Um, meanwhile on the bebop chair is uh, like um trying to figure out make peace together or the conflicting uh information to figure out who
um, the hacker is and
And spike is examining something called a pocos, which is brought back as a souvenir, which is just a fun little thing for a spike to be
Busy himself with since he doesn't want to get involved
Um jet turns to the computer to see that their police are also after Edward
But then Edward contacts them through a hack and she says like a satellite is what is behind the carvings um
And uh is like the only way to capture MPU is by flying manually to the satellite avoiding the attack satellites
Um, and then downloading MPU through a direct line to a system
Jet is like this is impossible and spike is like I'm out of here um, and any now spike is actually like now
I'm involved because this sounds like a dangerous job
Um, so as John said loves a bit of uh excitement in his life
Um, spike connects to they they take off and they begin the operation the spike connects to a poor um, which allows him to fire lasers without the computer
Um, and then with the computer and engine of spike like kind of like drift towards the satellite
Um, by opening and closing small airlocks that propel the ship back on course cool. It's really really cool
I love it when they do like fancy flying stuff in space
Uh, the animation is so stunning for this bit. Yeah, the problem they have is like there's a bunch of attack satellites
And they keep getting pushed back and and avoiding incoming fire
Um, and then phase like covering spike although she's not super into the idea of doing it
and and taking on the attack satellites who are firing at her
But then Edward pops up and is like fly close to the MPU
Um, because the attack satellites won't risk hitting the actual satellite
Um, and then use failure as a decoy, which she's not happy with
But the plan does work um, and then Edward goes and downloads MPU
Um, she also kind of promises um, Edward something which will come back to you in a second
But they get back on earth and spike and jet try and collect about you by the earth's police rule is that um
The bounties are only issued to life forms and not computers so they don't actually get any
Money for it. They wanted the hacker not the not the satellite um
Um, so yeah, uh the crew basically attempts to fly off then but it is revealed that um,
Faye actually promised Edward that she could join
Uh, as the crew of the bebub as a full member and although when they try and fly off
Edward uses her hacking tool to remote control them back into
Area and stop so she can board
And then spike complains that the three things he hates most are kids animals and women with attitude
And now they're all that bit that bit really got a laugh at me
It's it is like at the ending of it is like very like
Massage and it's to a degree, but the way he delivers it is like it's not I think the way he delivers it and like
Yeah, the way the way Faye is sitting there and she's like a cigarette hanging from it and she just looks like
Kind of an asshole. It's it's so funny
in yeah in any other delivery that would have sounded a bit weird, but in that delivery it was like really well done
It's like oh, he's clearly being cheeky and he's just like yes the uncancellable uh spikes
Spikes beagle. No, don't even try
Yeah, they're all like jammed into this one ship and they fly off from earth
Um where there is a new a land carving on earth now and it's the thing that I'd asked to draw and it is is
It is shit her computer persona thingy. That's Miley
Um onto the surface of South America, which is very cool. It's very cool
Very
And that is the jamming with Edward which I think in what's not to like about that folks
I think you I mean I think Edward is more fun as a character as part of the crew then on her own
Which I I think that we might have different things to say about Edward in the next few episodes
Interesting. Okay, because I I assumed that's what was gonna happen
I didn't know for sure if it really you you you you kind of had a feeling that Edward would join
No, no, I'm saying uh, I realized Edward wanted to be a part of the crew
I guess I wasn't sure if like the show was going to allow it
I didn't know like we were just collecting people yeah, like we did say and I I guess yeah, I guess we can say now, but
They we may gonna be upset. No, no, I was just gonna say like that's the crew of the bebop now like there's no
No, we're rolling now. We got a full crew. There's no we're rolling. Yeah, we're not adding any more people to the party
The gang's hair and this is from here like it becomes
I mean, it's already a great show, but it becomes even more

25 years after it first appeared on American television
No loose you're right and I think in terms of the greater good it works out. It's a win-win
But I do think this stuff would have
Been a formative piece of media for me. Right. Yeah, like so I think as someone who grew up with this show

Yeah, like a hundred percent in the same way that like the fifth element changed the person I am right like had a lasting effect
I have never watched the fifth elements

Really and I'm having the same organic like excitement reaction of being able to like
Do some sort of live watch party with you in that movie
