Bruins reported interest in Pinto doesn't make much sense

The Boston Bruins are reportedly interested in Ottawa Senators Restricted Free Agent Shane Pinto, but that doesn't really make much sense. I'm here to tell you why on today's episode of Lockdown Boston Bruins. Your Lockdown Bruins, your daily podcast on the Boston Bruins, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. What is up Bruins fans and welcome back to the Lockdown Boston Bruins podcast. I'm your host Ian McLaren and this is a daily show where we discuss all things spoke to be. You can also follow the podcast on social at locked NHL Bruins. You can find me, my dad jokes and hockey thoughts at Ian C. McLaren. All right today on the podcast we are focusing on some news and notes from around the black and gold over the last couple of days beginning with some speculation that the Bruins are interested in Ottawa Senators restricted free agent Shane Pinto. Now here's the situation on Pinto according to the hockey news. They write after scoring 20 goals in his rookie season must be difficult for Pinto to see everyone else in Ottawa get their bag while he's left out of the excitement of signing a new contract. The Senators of course just recently signed Jake Sanderson to a monster contract extension they've locked up Tim Suetzle, Josh Norris, Brady could chuck among others. The hockey news continues he's the ideal third line center, keep that in mind, who brings two way ability and depth goal scoring that teams crave. Pinto plays with physicality and has proven to be an excellent face-off man. So I have him in the sense signed a player who is so pivotal to their squad last season. Simply put it's the salary cap. The Sands went from a young up and coming team with all the cap space you could want to a team in a bit of a pickle. They currently have about 784 thousand in cap space with a combination of poor contracts on depth players and dead money being the ultimate culprit. Pinto deserves a raise from his entry level deal but the Sands have some stuff shuffling to do and may need to move out a contract or to do it that according to the hockey news. Now late last week our friends over at Boston hockey now put out a report that the Bruins were interested in Shane Pinto. Bruins of course we talked about this last week have some center depth issues, have a Zakat Charlie Coil penciled in and Jimmy Murphy writing the Bruins are expected to be interested in the Bruins or sorry in the Senators youngster. What would that cost the Bruins? The rumored price for Pinto will be high with Ottawa looking for high end prospect close to breaking the NHL roster. Murphy wrote the options from Boston would likely be Fabian Lysel or John Beacher. Both players played with the Providence Bruins last year. Lysel recording 37 points in 54 games, Beacher with 23 points in 61 games, acquiring high end prospects, helps Ottawa bolster their roster while not taking on too much additional cap it which Murphy's source says is a priority for the club. The Senators according to cap friendly at the moment have just under 895 in available cap space Pinto and Igor Sokolov both restricted free agents they have dead cap space going to a few players retain salary Matt Murray 1.562 million Bobby Ryan buyout 1.83 million calling white buyout as well as a Michael Delzado buyout so they have about 5 million in dead cap space similar to what the Bruins have it and that's why this doesn't really make sense from my perspective there's a couple of reasons. Number 1 the hockey news you saw they wrote that Pinto is the perfect third line center the Bruins are in need of a top line center so why would you flip a prospect like Fabian Lysel I mean I could see John Beacher for sure but Lysel a bit of a stretch to acquire a guide that you have already filled that role by signing Morgan Geeky resigning Trent Frederick we even saw this morning on the athletic Flutusian Zawa saying Frederick could be a pivotal offensive difference maker for the Bruins this season if you're going to be trading any high end prospects and of course that's relative here in the Bruins case as their prospect pool is widely regarded as being one of the lowest ranked in the NHL but still you need to hold on to your prospects there's no point really in trading for a guide that would fill a role that you already have filled here on the Bruins if you're going to trade prospects package them for someone who could step in and play top line or second line minutes for the Boston Roons like in the Lysel in home in Calgary or a mark shifly in Winnipeg these are the bigger fish that you should be after yes Pinto had a great rookie season 20 goals in a depth role but given more of an opportunity Morgan Geeky could be at that level this season for the Boston Bruins or Trent Frederick could hit that level as well for the Boston Bruins and that's the other thing Pinto still has to be signed so the Bruins are going to be acquiring him they knew they would need to create some capsules that's the reason why he hasn't resigned with the Ottawa Senators a lack of cap space the Bruins at the moment have about four hundred and twenty nine thousand dollars in available cap space that's less than what the Senators are working with so they too would have to not only trade one of their top prospects but also make some room cap wise to accommodate not just Pinto's contract from last year which was around nine twenty five but the raise that he's looking for at the moment so if he's looking for around two million you've already got that being given to Trent Frederick and Morgan Geeky who will be on the third line so added all up I can see why they would be interested in a guy like Pinto most teams around the NHL would but doesn't make sense for the Boston Bruins not really they again would have to give up a prospect to fill a position where they already have players slotted in in Morgan Geeky Trent Frederick is Pinto you could maybe argue that he could play on the second line where you put him with Posterdoch and Zaka and then Bump Van Reams egg down to the third line yeah I guess that could work but is he a second line center again for any of the hockey news best suited as a third line role player so we'll have to see here if there's any merit to it again consider the sources and put it in context for me it doesn't really make a ton of sense but crazy things have happened and there's a couple weeks here a few weeks before the opening night line-ups have to be locked in there's always waiver maneuvering potential trades don't forget a couple years ago Bruins traded Johnny Boychuk during training camp or right near the beginning of training camp so nothing set in stone until opening night really until after the trade deadline but for me I don't know seems like a lateral move at best where you are having to sacrifice certainly I would not be trading Fabian Lysel in order to acquire a galaxy in Pinto I think Lysel ceiling is a bit higher than Pintos all right and coming up after the break we're gonna talk about Milan Luchich being back in town Alex Sheson not being a huge fan of PTOs but first we are going to discuss our sponsor today which is our friends over at Fandule football season has started and Fandule is inviting rest of this week and then beginning on September 18th we'll be back to five shows a week as we get ready for a brand new Boston Bruins season there's a lot of you know playoff models coming out and we're going to break down the consensus of where the Bruins seem to be fitting in here coming into a brand new season and coming off that record breaking 2022-23 will be of course a much different looking team without Patrice Bergeron and David Kreechi in the lineup but there will be a familiar face back in black and gold and that is Milan Luchich who stepped on to the ice at warrior for the first time late last week that facility was not around when he was traded back in 2015 so he kind of joked that while it feels like being back home he did have some issues getting into warrior he wasn't quite sure where to enter but he his family very excited to be back in Boston his older two kids were born in Boston but they don't really remember too much so to bring them back to their roots is pretty cool and one of the biggest things Luchich is excited to bring to the table is extending the culture that was created within the Bruins dressing room over the past 15 years he was part of a championship core he helped to build that core he was a big part of the group in 2011 a big part of the group in 2013 they went to the stand like up final now with Chara Bergeron Kreechi, Rask, all retired he's aiming to make sure that the identity of the Bruins remains he said quote that's probably one of the biggest things coming back is to kind of keep that culture and the identity going in the locker room when you lose guys he continued like those leaders it gives other guys like himself an opportunity to step up and carry the torch it's a big part of his job this year coming in you've got to have fun with it you've got to look forward to it even though it's a big responsibility and that's his mindset going into the rest of the year he wants to bring a leadership role a physical role just being himself on a day to day basis having fun being in the NHL but when it's go time it's go time and Milan Luchic was honored late last week as well on Friday by learning that he had been selected as a member of the historic 100 the 100 most legendary Bruins in franchise history the full list will be revealed on Tuesday September 12th which will be tomorrow so on Wednesday I will be going through that list and offering some of my thoughts on it not part of the selection process of course but we'll definitely be giving some thoughts on that list when it's revealed tomorrow Luchic is on the list he informed Charlie McAvoy that he's on the list and I would expect a lot of familiar faces on there I'm hoping you know guys like Joe Thornton Nathan Horton Adam Oates Joe Juno from much other Craig Jayny some of these guys will be on that list as well and for Luchic he said it's a different time in his life he's had experience out in LA in Alberta playing for both those teams but he definitely thinks he could still bring a lot to the team and the organization it's not going to be easy to get playing time we talked last week about how Danton Heinen in on a PTO Alex Sheson in on a PTO you have a bunch of guys fighting four time in the bottom six yes per bulk fist AJ Greer Patrick Brown not to mention some AHL potential graduates Mark McLaughlin the aforementioned Beecher Georgie Murkyloff I could see Luchic being fourth liner possibly getting some time on the third line maybe getting some net front time on the power play to fill that Nick Felino role from the past couple years but I could see I'm also not playing each and every game getting some fresh legs in there at times and when he is on the ice really making his presence felt physically and you know possibly on the score sheet as well Luchic I'm very excited to see him back in black and gold very excited to see him in the Centennial jerseys which will have a 90s vibe like the hat I'm wearing today for those of you on YouTube kind of a vintage look and we'll get a look at those jerseys later on this week as well all right we're going to wrap up today's podcast by touching on how Alex Sheson feels about being at Bruins training camp on a professional triad offer spoiler alert not ideal for him but we'll discuss that finished today's episode coming up after the break this episode is once again text the word advertising to three three seven seven seven or visit lockdownpodcast.com slash advertising we look forward to hearing from you all right Alex Sheson I'm not unlike Milan Luchic no stranger to the Boston area he spent three seasons at BU from 2019 to 2012 and he is back in town will be attending Bruins training camp on a professional tri-out agreement and he said you know it's funny throughout his career there's been a bunch of rumors about him getting traded to Boston I touched on when he signed the PTO that the Bruins were really big on acquiring him as part of the Tyler Sagan trade with the Dallas stars uh they ended up with Luis Erickson a mafrazer rally smith instead they saw his scoring ability his great shot and coveted that unfortunately the stars weren't willing to part with Sheson in that deal and I touched on how he ended up remaining in Dallas becoming very close with Rich Peverley who went from Boston to Dallas in that trade it was very affected by the cardiac incident that Rich Peverley experienced that ultimately ended his career um he played three years for BU after being drafted in 09 the school means a lot to him the city means a lot to him he was around when the Bruins won back in 2011 he knows what the Bruins sports in general mean to the Bru to the city of Boston uh he compared Boston to a Canadian market when it comes to hockey with the media and the quality of sports that the city has he's not a huge fan however of coming to camp without a guarantee contract he admitted that he had a number of offers from other NHL teams a good amount of PTOs on the table he said where he's at in his career the two things he was really looking for were an opportunity to come in and earn a spot a lot of teams that have tons of forwards teams in different phases of winning and whatnot and that brought him to a second point you wanted to be on a team that's competitive he said quote the Bruins are an organization that have been on a high level in the NHL for the past well it's been his 12th year and they've always been on top gonna be a tough camp a lot of guys battling for spots he said quote I bet on myself quite a bit in my career it's always worked out doesn't mean that's easy but I'm willing to put myself up against the odds and see where it goes he has been through the experience of being on a PTO including in 2018 when he went to camp with the Edmonton Oilers produced a career high 22 goals and 38 points in 73 games that was after he won a Stanley Cup with the Washington capitals so even that didn't guarantee him a deal for the next season ended up having the best year of his career and now that he's gotten older he realizes that it's a privilege to play in the NHL you can't take it for granted whatever opportunities come his way he's always fought for what he believes and that's to play in the NHL 650 games he's won a cup played with some of the best players to ever play the game of Etchkin with David and he's trying to keep it going trying to squeeze a little bit more out of it and excited for this opportunity in training camp again he's going to have to fight off Jesper Bokefist, Danton Heinen, AJ Greer, Patrick Brown, Luchich and some of these younger guys in order to grab a spot but you know he's only 32 years old still has quite a bit left in the tank last season he scored nine goals sorry six goals three assists for nine total points in 20 games with the Detroit Redwings nine goals in 29 games down on Grand Rapids he had 13 goals in 67 games prior to that with the Vancouver Canucks he can put the puck on net he can put the puck in net and that's what the Bruins are in desperate need of this season talked a lot about how they're going to be strong and net defensively probably not as strong offensively and Alex Shason could bring the kind of pop that they need to retain a playoff spot coming up this season I'm very excited to see what he's able to bring to the table here in camp and in the exhibition season again no contract for him none for Heinen the Bruins will have some shuffling to do if they do get contracts I'd expect them to be minimums or no more than what Van Reemsdike and Luchich are making at one million some other guys that could be sent down like Greer Brown to make room for them perhaps even bookfast although I'd really like to see him make the team yeah it's going to be a very interesting camp for the Boston Bruins and I'm excited to see how things will shake out for the opening night lineup on Wednesday like I said we're going to talk about the top 100 list that will be revealed tomorrow later on this week we'll preview the prospect challenge coming up this weekend in Buffalo things are really starting to come together here
