Let's talk about number 63 Brad Marsh on our ongoing series looking back at the Boston
Bruins in 2022, 2023.
What is up Bruins fans and welcome back to the Lockdown Boston Bruins Podcasts.
I'm your host Ian McLaren and this is a daily show where we discuss all things Spoked Beat.
Today is Tuesday May 9th and I want to thank you so much for making Lockdown Bruins part
of your day every single day.
We are free and available wherever you get podcasts and on YouTube part of the Lockdown
Podcast network your team every day.
On today's podcast we are continuing our look back at some player performances, player
review series here, player by player starting with Patrice Berger on yesterday and we're
going to talk about Brad Marsh on today on the podcast.
So today happening later, General Manager Don Sweeney, head coach Jim Montgomery, team
president Cam Nealey will be meeting with the media.
So on to tomorrow's podcast we will pause this player review and give you a full recap
of what is said by those key members of the coaching staff and the front office.
It should be very interesting to get some insight on why Linus Olmark kept playing and
what the future of the club will be.
Before we get into Marsh on a quick reminder that you can find the podcast on Twitter and
Instagram at locked NHL Bruins and you can find me, my dad jokes and hockey tweets at
E and C McLaren.
Alright let's dig into Marsh on shall we?
What went well for him this season?
Well first of all we must highlight his appearance on this very podcast a couple of months ago
if you missed that episode do go back, search it up.
It is obviously the highlight of my season here on locked on Boston Bruins.
It's always been a goal to have an active player on here and it was great to be able
to chat with Brad and to get his insights on at the time what it meant to be in line
to win the president's trophy, how he was feeling and some other fun stuff in terms of his
Twitter presence which is no longer and choosing between Pooh Bear and Meth Bear.
What went well for Brad?
Well he was an absolute beast for the Boston Bruins in the playoffs.
He recorded 10 points in 7 games to tie for the team lead in playoff scoring with Tyler
Bautuzzi.
He had 4 goals, 6 assists and also had 25 shots.
Bautuzzi had 5 goals, 5 assists in those 7 games.
Not only that but he also stepped up as a leader for this team in the playoffs.
There's been talk in the past of not if but when Patrice Bergeron retires who will be
the next captain of the Boston Bruins.
And there was a time where it would have been maybe not inconceivable but very difficult
to tab Brad Marshon as the next captain of the Boston Bruins because of his reputation
because of his history of supplemental discipline.
But in the postseason with Marshon with Bergeron and Craychee both out of the lineup at times
he stepped up and was a leader on and off the ice for the Boston Bruins.
And it should be noted that he had only 2 minutes in penalties in the 7 games which
is insane.
Think back to the run to the Stanley Cup in 2011.
He had 40 penalty minutes that year.
2013 when they went to the final he had 21, 2019, 14.
This season only one minor penalty which is very indicative of the discipline that he
demonstrated.
Guys were trying to get under his skin but he stayed cool, he stayed calm and only took
that one minor penalty.
If indeed Patrice Bergeron decides to retire it would not shock me if he were to be the
next captain.
Now it won't be a long term, he's getting up there as well which we'll talk about in
a moment.
He's going to be turning 35 next week or in a couple days actually.
Excuse me.
I'll get his knees.
Alright, you didn't lose me there I just had to turn off the mic in order to sneeze.
Allerjays am I right?
Yes, so it wouldn't be for multiple seasons necessarily if he is the captain but he emerged
as a huge leader for the Boston Bruins especially in the playoffs.
He had 6 three-point games this season.
His best game individually performance wise was in game 6 against the Florida Panthers.
Unfortunately it was a loss but he did get 4 assists in that game.
The four points was a single game high for him this season including the regular season.
In terms of his possession metrics he had a 61.1 shot attempt differential.
That means the team was controlling the puck more often than not with him on the ice.
That was above his career average of 58.2.
What else worked in his favor?
He was shooting the puck with great regularity and again he came on strong near the end of
the season.
7 points sorry 10 points in 7 games for the Boston Bruins in the playoffs.

on the show you can expect a full recap of what general manager Don Sweeney team president
came nearly and head coach Jim Montgomery say today in their end of season media availabilities.
Let's get back here to Brad March on what went wrong for him this season.
Well can't really say it went wrong but he did have off season hip surgery on both hips
that certainly slowed him down to start and even when he was on the podcast as late as
in March he was talking about how he was not yet up to full speed.
He was still finding his game getting used to the surgically repaired hips testing capabilities
and certainly slowed him down through the regular season.
In fact he had his lowest point per game total since 2015 16 and fewest goals per game since
his first full season in the NHL that was in 2010 2011.
Brad March on scored at a rate of 0.29 goals per game that was down from 0.46 last season
career high 0.55 in 2020 2021 and the lowest since his first full season in Boston where
he scored only 17 goals in 77 games for a rate of 0.27.
He did have 0.3 goals per game in 2013-14 we scored 21 but goal scoring wasn't quite
there.
The play making as well was down 0.63 assists per game which still well above his production
from earlier in his career but down from the last few seasons.
0.92 points per game last season he had 1.14 two seasons ago it was 1.3 he's been well
over a point per game since 2016-17 under that mark this season which was I wouldn't
say a disappointment because again he did have that off season hip surgery but he was
definitely down in the regular season.
He did make up for that in the playoffs like I said well over a point per game in the playoffs
but the regular season production was down.
His age catching up to him a bit like I said he will turn 35 on May 11th which is just
two days from now you couple that with the off season hip surgery and Brad Marchon in
the regular season at least was not the same player that he has been in recent seasons.
Having said that his shooting percentage was also down 11.5 compared to 15.4 so perhaps
some of that was a bit of bad luck here and there or he just wasn't getting as much on
his shot as he was in the past.
Last season he finished 12th in Selkie voting probably won't be on the ballot this year.
Again just a down regular season overall for Brad Marchon and that was a combination of
recovery from that hip surgery age catching up to him and yeah that's pretty much it unfortunately
for him.
Now the question is will he be back in black and gold next season certainly and we'll talk
about that here in a moment.
I want to thank you once again for making lockdown Bruins part of your day every single
day again catch a full recap of what the front office and the head coach say today in
their end of season media availabilities on tomorrow's episode of locked on Boston Bruins.
This time last year I floated the idea that perhaps if Bergeron and Craychey are not back
as members of the Boston Bruins you may be looked to trade Marchon and recoup what you
can and get some building blocks for the future.
Marchon himself famously replied on Twitter that was a tough take and if you look at where
he's at now the leadership that he showed in the playoffs you're probably not exploring
that they weren't last season and they're probably not exploring that now.
In fact there's a possibility that Bergeron and Craychey could be back and even if not
there's a case to be made that the Bruins could still be a pretty solid playoff team
with Marchon one year removed from that double hip surgery and based on the way he played
in the playoffs.
And keep in mind four of those games were without Bergeron in the lineup although his
best game of the series did come with Patrice in the lineup.
At any rate even if they were to explore that he does have two years left on his contract
it's a very manageable deal just over six million dollars per season but he does have
a modified no trade clause.
This coming season he has a 15 team no trade list and in the final year of his deal he
has an eight team no trade list.
If you're looking at guys who can produce on team friendly deals then Brad Marchon's
is as good as it gets 6.125 million dollars and he remains an elite left winger for the
Boston Bruins.
But without any first or second round pick in each of the next two seasons do you explore
a trade where you could possibly recoup some of those picks and maybe get a center that
can play on the top six to offset the loss of Bergeron and Craychey if indeed they do
retire.
I don't know if it's worth it.
Marchon is an all-time Bruin.
He stepped up as captain to Facto captain in the playoffs.
He stepped up as one of your best players in the playoffs alongside Tyler Bertouzi who's
unlikely to be back and he is as essential to the culture of the Bruins as it gets.
He hasn't shed his reputation but he has cleaned up his act for sure.
He is a very vocal leader on and off the ice and along with Charlie McAvoy and David
Postrach that could be your new core next season.
Of course he only has a few seasons or a couple seasons left on his deal and who knows
what happens after that point but as far as if Marchon will be on the team next season
then it's almost guaranteed.
I don't think they're exploring any deals at this point.
Now if someone calls and offers something spectacular I used this example last year.
Say the Toronto Maple Leafs flame out in the playoffs like they seem ready to do down
three nothing to the Florida Panthers and they want to shake things up.
He's one of their core four for a guy like Marchon who has a winning track record.
Do you explore that if they're willing to part with William Nylander?
I mean maybe he's younger in his prime pretty good team friendly deal.
I don't know just throwing it out there that's something that if a team calls you at least
have to pick up the phone and hear what they have to say.
But again incredibly unlikely and I will not be going on Twitter to suggest that this
time around.
So overall for Brad Marchon slow start down regular season because of off season hip surgery
stepped up huge in the playoffs and with his 35th birthday set for two days from now he's
as important to the Bruins as ever and will be key to any bounce back they might experience
next season.
I think that's it for today's episode.
I don't want to get too deep into the Chicago Blackhawks winning the draft lottery last night
they're going to draft Connor Bredard extremely unfortunate that they didn't have their draft
pick removed in the wake of the Kyle Beach investigation.
And yeah just I was hoping for anybody really but Chicago maybe Arizona as well but Chicago
specifically for their drastic failure when it comes to handling that situation for over
a decade.
That's all I'm going to say about that.
Otherwise it's a beautiful Tuesday out there.
I hope you're all doing well taking care of yourselves taking care of each other and
we'll be back tomorrow to discuss what is said by the front office and the head coach
in the wake of this playoff collapse and then later on this week we'll get back to our
player reviews looking at Jake Dubresque and Charlie McAvoy.
That's it my friends.
