We're here every Monday through Friday between now and, well, mid-July, so we're back to daily here on the Lockdown Islanders podcast. The Islanders held their first scrimmage of the preseason. They do that ahead of the first preseason game, which is tonight at Madison Square Garden against the Rangers, and I will be live tweeting during the game, so please do follow me and check it out, and always great to talk Islanders hockey during the game or anytime. So they did hold the scrimmage, and here were the teams, you had the blue team against the white team, and here were the lying combinations for each, and we'll talk a little bit about that before we get into the nitty gritty of what happened in the shootout for the blue team, top line, J.G. Pazzo, centering, Anders Lee and Matthew Maggio. The second line was Brock Nelson, centering Ruslan Iskakov and William Dufor, Carlson Kulman, centred the third line, Pierre Engvall and Julian Goethe on either side of him, and then you had Johnston McClain in Clutterbuck as your fourth line. Isaiah George and Ryan Pollock were the top defense pair, Samuel Bouldook and Scotty Mayfield the second, and then you had Aho and Fulpe as your third pair with Grant Hutton as the extra and the two goalies, Semi and Vorlamov and Jakob Scarrick. Meanwhile on the white team, Bo Hervat centering Arno Durando and Matthew Barsal, so that trio staying together as the top line for white, Kasey Sezeka centers, Simon Holmstrom and Oliver Wallstrom on the second line, you had Kate's New Kirk and Fashing as your third line, Pinho Lyukus and Martin as your fourth line, Pelic and Ladou Mitchell and Dobson Chalowski and Salo are your defense pairings and Ilya Serokin can apple be are the gold tenders. It goes to overtime in this game and team blue gets a five to four win, two goals for Matthew Barsal and Julian Goethe in this one, other goals Hudson Fashing and William do four. At the end of each period, they did hold a shootout competition and after the first period it was Arno Durando who looked really really good while Isaiah George who continues to just play really well did a great job when he got a chance to score in the shootout and look let's face it let's cut to the chase the New York Islanders need need to be better in shootouts and in overtime this year and you know we've talked about the power play being a problem and the offense overall the power that the Islanders play in three on three in overtime and in shootouts that directly is a reflection of the lack of skill that this team has and you know you don't need to be and you lead goal scorer to be a great shootout player I can go back to Franz Nielsen who was what realistically a 15 to 20 goal a year guy for most of his NHL career but he was like a shootout specialist so realistically the Islanders if they're smart and I'm not saying that they're going to be smart or not but if they're smart they are going to have at least keep on this roster one player maybe two who are really good at shootouts in order to just be better let's face it if the Islanders last year what did they win one game in a shootout all year and it wasn't until late if they would have gone 500 in shootouts maybe they're fighting the Rangers for third place in the Metropolitan Division and they aren't just making the playoffs by one point they're making it by four or five points it makes a difference in the standing so I don't like shootouts every dayers you know I think shootouts are exciting I'm not going to deny that but I think it's a horrible way to decide a hockey game and I don't like the oh yeah in an overtime loss or shootout loss yet two points for the winner and one point for the loser I think they either should be going to a three points for regulation win two for an overtime or shootout win one for an overtime or shootout loss and none for regulation loss or you just eliminate the loser point and if you win an overtime you get two points and the other team gets the losing team gets none but you know that's another argument maybe for another day but right now the Islanders need to be better in shootouts the winning goal by the way in overtime scored by Julian Goatier and that was extremely exciting due for with a great pass that sprung Goatier who beat Ken Applebee it went in off the post and behind Applebee and that's again what happened some quotes from Lane Lambert it gives you a really good indication uh when you've got them in a game situation how well guys are grasping concepts and then you look at individual things individual tendency some guys might look really good in drills and in practice but maybe not so good in a game situation so these are the type of things you look for and figure out and he added we've got work to do I fully expected that after day one it's the first time we've had a little bit of a scrimmage but it's the first time they've been on the ice in a game type situation so we knew that there would be some I guess growing pains or whatever and it's only the fourth day on the ice but to sum it up he said I just think we need to play faster we need to move the puck faster for sure so the good news also by the way Oliver Wallstrom out there first time he's in a game situation in almost a year he was injured what back in December said he felt good and uh that is obviously important and you know first game situations for some of the younger guys so that's a plus but here's the the I guess bad news is that what we still do not see is Kyle Palmerie out there on the ice he continues to mistime and it's really just a shame but hopefully palms will soon be back and ready to play you know the Islanders keep saying oh yeah not not serious well let's hope not now we're going to talk a little bit more about the lying combinations and what it all means we've got that and a whole lot more still to come on today's locked on Islanders podcast today's episode is brought to you by Fandall sports book snap into action this NFL season with Fandall America's number one sports book right now new customers get $200 in bonus bets advertising we look forward to hearing from you so the line combinations and I went over them in the last segment and what does it tell us about the Islanders well what it does is you see that Lane Lambert is giving the younger players a chance to play with veterans yeah for example on the blue team the top line Pazzo and Lee two veterans obviously two veterans who do not have a lot of experience playing with each other and then you add one of the top prospects Matthew Maggio second line Brock Nelson Ruslan Ischkekov the two veterans do four the the prospect Carson Culeman Pierre Engvaugh Julian Goethe a all kind of veterans and then you have you know McLean as the young guy on the fourth line Ross Johnston Calclarter Buck flanking him on defense Samuel Bouldow getting to play with Scott Mayfield Isaiah George playing with Ryan Pollock you know again whenever possible Folk playing with Sebastian Aho you're getting the young guys experience playing with the veterans and I think that gives the young guys of you know it gives the coaches a better indication of where the young guys are in relation to the veterans and that's important because how they play with other young players yeah there's something to be gained from that but you also want to know can they keep up with the veterans can they read the veterans body language and anticipate what the next move is um you know take the white team matchups again Bo Horvat and Matthew Barsal we know those two are going to start the season together pairing Arno Durando next to them um something that they've been doing in practice doing it in a game situation you know Barsal had a couple of goals uh in this scrimmage does that give Lane Lambert a better idea of the chemistry of Arno Durando with Horvat and Barsal and if so does it give Durando a better chance to squeeze himself onto the roster uh Wallstrom homestrom and Sezekus Sezekus the veteran Wallstrom and homestrom both young veterans really for this team Kate's new Kirk in fashion kind of mostly uh younger players with fashion it probably having the most experience and then Pinho Ryukis and Martin Matt Martin being the experienced guy Scott Ladou and Adam Pelik is a pairing uh Noah Dobson with Mitchell Chalowski and Salo again a young guy and a more experienced guy and I think that's just a very smart thing now uh Alexander Romanov did not take part in the scrimmage he's did skate with that third group so anybody who wasn't mentioned uh in the groups that I read off and those line combinations was off working with group three and then Kyle Palmerry still listed as day to day Sorokin and Varlemov got to play in the first two periods for their team and then after that it was Ken Applebee in for Sorokin Jacob Skerik in for Varlemov so again the islanders kind of just setting things up and here's what Lane Lambert had to say about having the prospects team up with the veterans it's communication and that's the reason why we have some young guys with veterans it's about the culture those guys have created the culture and they are the culture and having them pass it down through their communication and their work ethic I think is important so you know good intentions there and it made sense now we got some quotes in the hockey news from uh the veterans about some of the young players and here is what Jay G Paso had to say about Matthew Maggio I think he's a very smart player obviously he's got good quickness to his feet and moves super well but I think his hockey sense stands out he goes to the right spots on the ice he knows when to drive to the net he's got a lot of drive which is not always the first thing you see for a young player if he wants to drive the he's there he's there to make plays he's got a good shot too so he's very impressive so far Andrews Lee also on Maggio his IQ is there you watch our practices there's not a lot of space out there with some of the way things are designed and it's meant to be that way so you really got to think the game in a different way you can't just rely on escaping and he's done a good job of that he's really open and just asking questions and stuff like that and that's the little things that just start to build one on the other to create a little bit of a rhythm meanwhile uh talking about Ruslan Iskakov here's Brock Nelson uh basically working with him and then talking about William do four I mean his shot for sure has been a standout he can wire the puck he gets himself in good spaces or a couple of nice shots finding corners with some velocity seems to be a smart player he's improved size wise and speed wise every year then Brock Nelson on Iskakov super shifty and super quick pretty fun guy to watch in tight spaces how he can absorb the speed and the pressure and get in and out of the turns his hands mimic that as well he's got some quick hands and can make some pretty nice plays he has the puck on a string so I try to get open for him he finds the guys in tight spaces and gets some opportunities so again you have the veterans talking extensively about the younger guys and what they can add and uh seeing these young guys get experience now we're going to see more of it tonight when the islanders open up the preseason against the New York Rangers I can't wait I can't wait it is on MSG and MSG plus and it's a seven o'clock eastern time start tonight at Madison Square Garden hopefully they'll have the islanders announcers available for this game that is uh expected if it's also on MSG plus and again like I said uh ice wars NYR vs NYI that's my twitter handle and feel free to follow because I will be live tweeting during the game we have got a lot more to get to on today's show we will talk about Scott Mayfield what he brings to the table what his expected role is and what he needs to do to be successful this year for the islanders plus we will have our islanders birthday of the day a small tough guy from the by player look at the islanders and what role each player is going to play and what would a successful season be today Scott may feel every day as we've been doing this now for the better part of a week and we will keep doing it until the season gets underway may feel just signed a new deal he's going to turn 31 in about three weeks and he's been with the islanders since the beginning played a handful of games in 2013 2014 2015 2016 became more of a full-time guy in 2017 2018 and look may feel it's been in part of nine seasons for the islanders last year six goals that's a career high 18 assists another career high so obviously the 24 points a career high he was a plus 83 penalty minutes still had a little bit of a tendency to take a few foolish penalties and I think needs to be a little more efficient at getting the puck out of his zone he's not bad at it but he's not always consistent doesn't always take that simple opportunity to clear the zone and that's what you want to see may field has great size he's six foot five two hundred and twenty pounds he is at his best in his own zone as a stay at home defenseman the issue you know he really did especially early in the season like the fact that Lane Lambert was giving the defenseman an opportunity to join the rush obviously in a calculated fashion and he did score a little more as we see the career highs but it did occasionally get him into trouble getting back into his own zone he can certainly kill penalties he had only 107 hits which is not a lot over 82 games for a guy of his size but you know may field is not his game is not based necessarily on blistering hits it's more on you can't get around me you're you're not going to beat me for a puck I have a longer reach than you and you're going to not get to the spot on the ice you want to get to because I'm in your way so there is that aspect of it to me for Scott may field what he needs to do if he can duplicate his numbers from last year even a little lower even if he has four goals and 15 assists get me get me close to 20 points be a plus plus minus cut the penalty minutes down a little bit from a year ago be an effective penalty killer when called upon and be smart as to when you choose to you know join the rush may field a capable steady veteran player going to be here for the next seven years so he'll be 37 when his contract expires and again one of those Lulamorello moves of signing a steady efficient bottom pair defenseman yeah he could fill it on the second pair but to me you know signing a guy like may field to a seven year deal that's the Lulamorello philosophy I like Scott may field I think he's useful steady dependable good guy off the ice but again I just question the wisdom of a seven year deal I hope he earns it I think he's more than capable of earning it and we'll see if he's able to get that job done I think you know I expect may field to once again be a third pair defenseman and I guess the question becomes you know who do you pair him with and you know that's not necessarily the easiest thing I you could go with may field Romanov you can go with may field aho or may field bulldoke if bulldoke beats out aho for that final spot in the lineup I I really think that may field and bulldoke or aho is a better combination I think dobson Romanov makes sense if you keep pellic and pull off together we know Lane Lambert they're going to be changes within games let alone within the season we'll see how it all fits together but to me Scott may field look he played 82 games last year let's hope he can do that again and just be that steady presence that helps solidify the islanders defense time now for our islanders birthday of the day and this is a guy who maybe isn't remembered as much as he should be but today is his 71st birthday and original islander well he played eight games for the original islanders uh spent most of that 72 73 season with the new Haven Nighthawks of the AHL but a 10th round pick of the islanders in their first ever draft 5 9 170 and yet a tough guy who never back down from anyone I'm talking about Glendon Albertan native Gary Howett howett he could put the puck in the net had 21 goals in 1975 76 16 more in 78 79 in 74 75 he had a 48 points which was his islander high he later had 50 points with the heart for the whalers in 1981 82 finished up his career briefly with the devils in 82 83 and 83 84 but the bulk of his career was with the islanders and Gary Howett went over 200 penalty minutes twice with the islanders once with the whalers small guy never backed down was on the first two Stanley Cup winning teams had three goals and four points in 21 playoff games that first cup year and 84 penalty minutes in 87 career playoff games all with the aisles 12 goals 26 points and 289 penalty minutes but he could put the puck in the net had a few hat tricks we're going to go back and remember one of them December 20th 1975 at the St. Louis arena islanders and blues Chico Resh against Eves Belange the goalie for St. Louis and the blues took a one nothing lead on a goal by Red Berencine but then the islanders scored count them seven unanswered goals including three by our islanders birthday of the day Gary Howett one in the second period assisted by Bob Nystrom another later in the second period Andre St Laurent and Bob Nystrom with the assist and then one with about five and a half minutes left in the third period Bob Nystrom and Lauren Henning with the assist islanders beat the blues seven to one the hat trick for Gary Howett Billy Harris and Bob Nystrom each with three assists in this game and for Chico Resh 28 saves when facing 29 shots the islanders put together 38 shots in this game Clark Gilley's leading the way with seven so happy birthday to Gary Howett 71 years old today he is our islanders birthday of the day I want to thank everyone again for making locked on islanders your first listen every day
