Welcome to Who Upwear with Hillary Kerr, your direct line to the designers, stylists, beauty experts, editors, and taste makers who are shaping the ever-evolving world of fashion. I'm your host, Hillary Kerr, and today, I'm passing the mic to Who Upwear Editor and Chief Cat Collings, and fashion editor Eliza Hubert, who have come straight from New York Fashion Week to give you all the glorious details. After seeing what the spring summer 2024 collections had to offer, they're here to share what trends you can expect and which designers outdid themselves this season. Plus, they're talking street style and giving us an insight look at some of the busiest internet moments you've been seeing on your feeds. It's all coming up on Who Upwear. Hi, I'm Cat Collings, Who Upwear's Editor and Chief. I'm Eliza Hubert, a fashion editor at Who Upwear. And we're talking New York Fashion Week. How exciting. The most exciting. Eliza, tell me what the week was like for you. It just wrapped today. Yeah, I'm such a fan of New York Fashion Week. It's always just the kickoff to a month full of nonstop inspiration, both from street style to the runways. All of this ends up driving our content for the next six months. So I always find that in the days and weeks following New York's Fashion Week, all of my pictures are the most robust. They're the most passion driven. So I'm always excited to see it come onto the calendar. Yeah, it's like the fuel that keeps Who Upwear moving, right? Since trends and shopping all started the runway, really. Obviously, trends are part of our bread and butter here at Who Upwear. You have such a great eye for trends. So I'm curious of what you saw and which ones stood out to you. What you think will be sort of setting the tone for shopping for next spring. There are always so many. It's kind of crazy how many trends can fit into a five or six day week. But I kind of split it up into two when I was doing my research ahead of this and just throughout the week. One side, there's a lot of continuation from fall. So we saw a lot of those chrome and gold hardware moments specifically on bags or belts or those really large statement eighties inspired earrings. I know we had our little matching moment with our silver cuff bracelets at tiby. And I feel like things like that are everywhere right now, both on the runway and when it comes to streets. So okay, what else trends wise. Another one is this trend that last season in our all cities, we called ready to wear, which is just this really hyper wearable trend that kind of skews away from those really loud hard to style pieces and are just super classic. If you buy into it, you can have those pieces for the rest of your life. And they're not boring. You can still style them up really, really in interesting ways using things like those chrome moments. We saw a ton of it this week. Tibby's whole collection really felt like a building blocks of your wardrobe type collection. Proenza had those loud moments as well, but really at the backbone of it were classic timeless pieces. Brand and Maxwell costs form all of these collections just had a super simple beautiful air about them that I feel you could take right off the runway and put on tomorrow. And it would really be an effortless move. Yeah, I feel like at first glance overall, maybe there was sort of a trend of kind of quietness on the runway, which sometimes you want to be like shocked and odd by the visuals of it, but I do think the wearability element. I'm glad that designers are like taking this into consideration and it does feel like the runway to real way is not such a big gap anymore. So much easier, I think, for people who don't work in fashion to just be able to see a runway look and make it their own, whereas that's not always easy when you have to buy a ton of things to create a look. Totally. And what about a color of the season? I love talking color trends. Was there one that stood out? I feel like red is the only color that matters and has been mattering even more than since last season, like for the last year. That's kind of where the buzz has been, but only really in the last six months have I started to see it really come to fruition when it comes to street style and campaigns. It was more big on the runway, but if you thought it was going to go away, it didn't Kate really let the color drive their collection other than the simple black and white that they consistently include in the collection. Pro and the school are also really played into the shade, having one look in particular that was head to toe red, including red tights, which have been another easy way to get the trend into your wardrobe sense tights often can be on the more affordable side. I know I got mine at Calesadonia for I think $10 or so. Then I also kind of split the trends into newer trends, so ones that maybe we haven't seen a huge splash for in the last season and caught our attention for spring, one of which were fishnet fabrics. The one exception to this is that fishnet shoes and Mary Jane flats have been huge with those viral sold out a lie of flats. But now we're seeing it a ton when it comes to garments at to Gabriela Hurst Ralph Lauren, we saw this and also embellished netting moments at Tori Birch and Gabriela Hurst. I personally loved the bell embellished net fabric at Tori Birch and the way that when the model walked it really almost created music that came with the garment. Yeah, totally. You could hear that model coming from a mile away. Another one that I've been seeing a ton of is lace and then also just super delicate really feminine materials. We saw this a lot at Plomo Spain, Proenza, Michael Cors and Altazara. I think the lace thing, it can feel hard to style in a way that's really casual, but one of my favorite ways is just a lace tank top. I know Kate makes one that's gorgeous, just black, spaghetti straps paired with jeans and a great shoe. It's so pretty, it's so delicate and just looks elevated every time. And then lastly, we're Capri Pants. I don't know how everyone feels about this, but once you see the looks from Tori Birch, Phillip Lim, and TikTok favorite labels like Sandi Liang and Mira Pele, you're going to change your mind. Specifically the sort of petal pusher look. I posted a bit about the Capri Pants coming back and people were quite triggered, I would say. I see it as one of these early 2000s trends that they'd prefer to leave in the past, but I don't know, I find it to be sort of appealing because it is so hard to wear. People are so turned off by it, but I'm like, okay, it's almost like a challenge here. How can I do this? And I was actually quite inspired by one of our editors, Anna Laplaca, who wore some Capri Pants to the Sandi Liang show actually. And it was funny because obviously they're showing for spring next year, and Anna was already wearing it now quite ahead of it. But I think it gives us like gorgeous Italian retro sort of like Roman holiday, Audrey Hepburn moment, catch me in Capri's come spring 2023. I'll be there. They really make me think of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel when they're in the summertime. Just like a pair of petal pushers, a great linen, shapely jacket with big shoulders or something. Yeah, it's a vibe. It's a vibe. I think the challenge is how to not make it feel retro, right? How to bring it into 2023, 2024? A bit of balance. What trends are you here for? And what are you not into? I just profess my love for Capri Pants. One of the things that I'm not yet convinced of is the net fabric when it comes to garments. I think Proenza did an amazing job. Those final halter dresses were incredible. But when it comes to a trend as a whole, I'm not necessarily ready to put all of my money into it yet. However, one that I am loving so much are these lacy details. I am currently saving up for a gorgeous, strapless, lace top from Bofi. It's super simple, but feels very romantic, which is something that I want to bring into my wardrobe more in the next few seasons. I just got a Bofi top tail. Everything from them right now is so gorgeous. What about on the streets? What were some of the trends that you were loving, IRL? So there were a lot of casual, like wearable luxury looks. What I mean by that is a great pair of jeans with a tee and a designer bag and like the killer little kitten heel. The girls are loving proud of these days in that department or like a timeless maxi dress of statement earrings. So actually it's kind of feeling like the end of the peacocking era that we've known. We're a little grateful for that. I feel like in the past I've been pulled to like dress in ways that weren't actually my personal style. Just, you know, to have that splashy moment and that seems to be, you know, coming to a close. It removes a lot of the stress I would say. Absolutely. I love it. It's like you're real self and your fashionings can be the same person. In terms of it items on the street, there's one bag that I sell in particular. The Louis V. Small Squeeze bag is what it's called. Which is a really cute name across categories of people at Fashion Week like editors to influencers. I saw this probably at least 10 times I would say. It's a really cute little bag. I just looked at the price and it's unfortunately a little shocking. But I love the chain detail on the strap. It's really pretty. Almost feels like jewelry. Yeah. The third last thing I'll call out for street style trends is something that they're calling bloke core. So this is like a UK centred, you know, for them football as we call it soccer culture. So think lots of jerseys, but like styled and really elevated way style with something that you think is like the opposite of a jersey. A cool trouser or skirt or something. And then, of course, the ever present sambas. Which do you think we're are we moving on from sambas anytime seen Eliza? I do kind of feel like there have been a lot of them, which can make it a little bit less exciting. But that doesn't take away from the fact that they're just really comfortable easy to style shoes. So I don't think they'll go away completely. But maybe a new sneaker will come along that will capture the world in the way that sambas did. Yeah, I feel like that successor is those yellow and blue on its UK tiger. So I'm glad you knew. You know, it has a bit of a presence that sneaker even more honestly than the sambas. I do feel like the Wales Bonner newest collab with Adidas that has the chrome sambas is going to just reinbigrate it all over again. Those are sold out everywhere and everyone's trying to get them. So it was so smart of Adidas to partner with her her versions of them are just like so good. You can't deny it. You don't care that it's oversaturated the whole category. And then rounding out the bloke core. You've seen all the girlies in their track shorts. Adidas ones a little like shorter silky kind of shorts. That movement happening as well, which is not my like core style, but I I'm very curious about it. So kind of going off that what did you end up wearing to the shows this week? Oh, okay. Well, I had a little dress over pants moment, which is always a fun styling tip that I feel like always comes up now and again. So Maxie skirts. I also always have at least one Christopher Esber piece because I love that brand. I feel like it's my time per year that I'm like, okay, let me see what they've got. I actually only purchased one new clothing item for newer fashion week, which is this red deotima sort of crochet duly dress. They just had their New York fashion week debut. So I was really excited to support them. Definitely. One of the things I was so inspired by is I learned that you and a couple of the other New York editors to plan for New York Fashion Week outfits put together a PowerPoint. These are working girls. These are corporate nine to five girls. They're like, how do I tackle this? I'll make a little presentation of my looks and we'll put in references. I'm obsessed with this idea. So for the burgos who are listening or the type A people something you can do to plan for any sort of occasion where you need to really bring it in the outfit department. And what about you Eliza? What did you wear to the shows this week? You had a lot of great looks. Well, there are a lot of sheer skirts. I'm obviously not over this trend. I know we've talked about it a lot on the site, but it just is a really fun styling moment, I think, and maybe something that I can't wear to a more professional setting. So when you can really play around during fashion week, it's a fun thing to do that with. One of the looks I paired a white sheer skirt with this baby pink mens button down shirt that I ended up stealing from my boyfriend. And it's like old Brooks brothers, but I styled it based on a runway look from Tibi where the shirt was tucked in so that the tail of the shirt acted as sort of a mini skirt underneath. So it wouldn't be so sheer. And then I added these hot pants underneath. So it wasn't so naked underneath. And then another way that I styled it was with this gorgeous strapless Peplum top that I bought from the real real from Kate about six months ago. And then the only other thing that I actually bought was this hourglass tunic and matching skirt from Tori Birch that I feel like I've been dreaming about slash talking endlessly about ever since the spring show last September. So I went into the store, I bought the top when it went on sale and then the sales assistant was really trying to get me to get the skirt. She texted me and she put it on hold. I held off for about two weeks and then the day before the show, I was on the train on my way somewhere else and I just got off the train and walked right and bought it. And I wore it to the show and I absolutely love it and can't wait to style it. Two weeks and you're still like obsessing, I think that's a plenty good reason to go for it. I absolutely agree. All right, let's talk about favorite shows, favorite designers that showed in your fashion week. I've got three. So I'll just roll them out Brandon Maxwell. Amazing. Altsara, Tori Birch all had high expectations, especially Tori Birch and I feel like they all over delivered, which it's just so exciting. You can really feel it in the energy when it happens. Like, you can really tell how intimate people are from how hard they clap. Like, Brandon Maxwell got a standing ovation and people were like, you know, making some noise for him. Other shows are like, you know, people are like doing the little poll. And you've got a few favorites to be on the ones I mentioned. Yeah, so while I also loved Brandon and Tori, I was also obsessed with the Pro Enza collection and Tibi's collection. I have been adding a ton of Tibi pieces into my wardrobe lately. They're so easy to style, but also really exciting. The designer Amy, she's always on social media showing people how to style things in a way that feel really personal. And I think this collection was no different overall. All of these people we've talked about. I think they really just know how women want to dress right now. And I think that's really important. I was also very excited to see some brands return to New York Fashion Week after some sort of hiatus, Rachel Komi came back. Such a fun, exciting brand and very New York, Philip Lim. I know so many people were so excited to have him back. That collection was gorgeous. Lots of really pretty pastel pieces after the show finished. He ran out, of course, and they do their wave. And he gave his mom a hug or someone from his family are close circle. And they were like hugging for like a really long time. And you could tell it was very emotional. But then since I think 2018 that he showed a staple, I think, for many of us have kind of grown up with that brand so sweet. And some new debuts, right? I love the brand Bootsie. The designer is super young. She just graduated from college and already has grown this massive following specifically on tiktok. I know Belly Deeds already worn it. And all the girls came out to Brooklyn for it right before New York Fashion Week started. The collection was gorgeous, just a really fun, playful, wearable collection. And then also Grace Lang, one of J-Lo's favorite brands. We've seen her wearing it. Really cool moments for those chrome details that we talked about earlier. Yes. And then Dio Tima, as we mentioned before, had a New York Fashion Week debut. And also, I didn't get to go to the show, but Michelle Del Rio had a show. And I just ordered one of her skirts. And it was so cool because it was just like you placed an order with her via email or DM on Instagram. And then they're handmade to order these skirts. And she's like communicating with you throughout the process. So it feels very personal and special. And her debut collection looked very cool and artistic. It kind of in a way reminded me of the excitement around like when puppets and puppets first came on the scene. That show was fun to today. All right, next. Let's talk about the biggest moments, whether they're big for you, big for the fashion community. And that comes to mind immediately is Peter Doe's debut for Helmet Lang. Definitely one of the most talked about moments. The biggest anticipation. It will be interesting to see the designer show in Paris for his own brand. Compare it later this month. I know he said that the only reason he took on Helmet Lang is because they're very different price points, very different brands. Obviously, they'll be very different, but it'll be interesting to like just kind of look at them side by side, I think. I would say for me. After the success of Torrey Birch's last two runway collections, the expectations were very high. And nobody really wanted to say anything. There was just like, what's going to happen? Is it going to be even better? Is it going to be similar? And I can say with 100% certainty that it lived up to my expectations and even exceeded them. The show took place at the new Richard Gilder Center at the Natural History Museum. And it was in this gorgeous bubble, kind of beehive room that had just been constructed. And the clothes were really beautiful. One of our other editors, Yusra, did backstage and captured the most beautiful content of these bell embellished knitwear pieces and satin lady coats. I also think that show one element that took it to the next level was the sporty sunglasses with the looks. It just added this like cool element. And I was curious if they are Torrey Birch or she collaborated with another designer for them or just borrow them. I need the details on the sunglasses because they're cool. Well, I feel like they do make eyewear normally. So perhaps that'll be the it Torrey Birch accessory come spring. Speaking of small minute details that will make people crazy. What are some of the things that the internet went crazy for that you noticed this season? One was definitely the protesters in the front out code that was kind of like the first big internet lights a fire moment. I was sitting one seat over from them and it was funny because we were kind of like crammed in there like extra tight and that happens a lot of fashion shows. But now I know it's because those ladies were not supposed to be there. So it was sort of shocking when they popped up because sometimes brands in the past have done plants in the audience and the people in the audience will be wearing the clothes and actually be models and it kind of is a fun performance moment. I think people thought it was that at first and turned out not quite. But that collection the coach was a really special moment because it was Stuart the designer's 10 year anniversary. So I was sad that that you know might have taken a little bit of attention away, but the night overall was really gorgeous. And luckily so much stuff happens during New York Fashion Week that crazier moments made people forget about that and then everyone will remember just the clothes and the beautiful moments. One of those such cases is Anna Delvie held a rooftop fashion week party slash show that she had to have on the roof of her apartment because she's still on house arrest. This was also kind of an announcement that she's joining forces with PR icon Kelly Catrone and starting their own agency together. She's a wild pairing but a very exciting one I'm excited to see what is next for them. I mean I guess Anna Delvie is kind of a PR genius so it makes sense she's joining forces with Kelly Catrone. I know a lot of people were like all I want to do this fashion week is meet Kelly Catrone and icon. And lastly, Scott had this gorgeous show at the plaza and some of the seats were down by the runway and others were in these kind of theater boxes. So I was in one of these theater boxes with about five or six other editors that overlooked the runway so you had a really good view of basically every single person that was there. And immediately all of us be lined or high line to Jeff Bezos who was sitting in the front row watching every single look with his claps at the end. It was just very funny that he ended up being there. He also arrived by helicopter but of course he did. I had the TikTok sound in my head the whole time the Jeff Bezos sound which if you know you know I also like the perfect sound where Nicki Minaj is like, I don't know what are you doing. It was a little distracting to be honest because the collection was really fun and but Jeff there was Jeff. It's just funny because fashion week you see the same people where it's not that big of a group that ends up going to everything. We know a lot of the editors influencers we all kind of know each other from doing this season after season. So when someone shows up that you're very much not expecting to be there. People take note it's for sure. Yeah those are definitely the memeable moments of fashion week. Well I know that you just arrived back in LA so I don't want to take too much time away from your short break between now and when you had off to Paris. Well I need to get going on my PowerPoint presentation so thank you so much Eliza for chatting with me. Happy to send the dozens of PowerPoints that we have created. Our audio engineers are at Treehouse Recording in Los Angeles, California. And our music is by Jonathan Leahy. Hi podcast listeners, I'm Grace O'Connell Joshua and I'm an assistant shopping editor here at WhoUpWhere. As a New York City-based editor when New York Fashion Week comes around it's a mix of excitement and exhaustion but mostly excitement. People from all of the fashion capitals flock to New York City for shows, dinners and parties galore. This episode we heard firsthand from Kat and Eliza about their experiences at this year's New York Fashion Week. As someone who attended myself I absolutely couldn't wait to hear them speak on their experience. But what I really can't stop thinking about is all of the chic trends I saw on everyone attending Fashion Week this season. As I mentioned I'm a shopping editor so whenever I see something I love my brain goes immediately to thinking of how I can get my hands on it and how I can tell our readers about it fast. This Fashion Week was all about accessories. Every show event preview that I went to was covered in next level chic bags, shoes and jewelry pieces. This inspired me to take a look at my own accessories collection and when I did it was clear that I needed a serious upgrade. After asking some of my fellow editors there was only one answer, go to eBay. eBay has been the secret weapon of fashion people for years and once I started looking around for great accessories I was thrilled by how many great pieces they had. But what really got my attention was the authenticity guarantee service. Trust me this service is next level. eBay's expert authenticators personally inspect the items and verify your purchases. So you always have the confidence that you're avoiding dupes and you're getting the real deal. So when I found the perfect Botega Vanetta Instant Chotto bag I knew that I could purchase it with confidence and that I was getting an authentic designer piece. This bag has been on my wish list for so long and now that I know I can get it and get it authenticated through eBay I finally decided it was time for me to have it. Don't even get me started on the vintage 18 karat yellow gold sculpted cable dome ring from David Irman that I found. It's literally been living in my mind rent free since I saw it on eBay. What really gets me is the authenticity guarantee. I mean they even authenticate eligible sneakers. eBay authenticated a pair of air Jordans I ordered so I had the comfort of knowing that not only did I snag a really great pair of shoes but that they're the real deal. To use the authenticity guarantee all you have to do is select the authenticity guarantee filter just like you would to filter for color or price when you're shopping on eBay. It made the whole shopping process that much easier. Trust me I basically shop for a living and eBay is the way to go when you want to get those really special authentic pieces that you know you'll have forever. Thank you so much.
