The ending Poland show got to go after this everything we got bigger. They're gonna come with everything they got I'll start
on by saying I'm bored I'm broke and I'm back the ending Poland show on ESPN 630 starts
Right now. Oh, I got some NFL scheduling news
trickling out with the schedule to be released fully tomorrow night
Something came up today that it's kind of intriguing for New Year's Eve. I get to that the NBA of course as
Philadelphia has put Boston on the brink
Denver also in position to move on after their win last night. We'll look at that and
also, we do Orioles preview every Wednesday Austin Hayes
outfielder for the O's do to join us at 10 30 and also Mike Elias the general manager had a news conference yesterday
I pulled a few things from that worth kicking around
Nationals closing out their series today in San Francisco the rubber game of the series
Josiah Gray on the Mounties pitch very well lately and then they finally come home after being out west
For over a week now. They got a series starting against the Mets
tomorrow night and we'll get to all that and and everything else that's going on in sports, but I
didn't want to start with this and
If you went to BCC high school
Sometime probably in the 60s 70s 80s maybe even into the 90s. I'm not sure
You may have heard of a particular teacher there
She's just passed away at the age of of 97 97 years old and I went to BCC high school from
1973 to
1976 and I had many many excellent teachers there too really stood out for me one was my history teacher
Lester Olinger who passed away probably 20 years ago totally dedicated to what he did
I don't believe he ever married he was he was just so dedicated to his job and worked the scoreboard at the
basketball games and the football games at one time was a baseball coach
but he taught history and he taught it as well as I don't I think anybody possibly could he was just
Terrific at what he did and it was tough and and he had he had a saying that if you if you complained
About the work being too tough or that you couldn't complete the assignment or whatever it was he would say
Safa and and somebody made a sign that they put up in his classroom
su FFA
Safa and I also had a chemistry teacher who was even tougher than Lester Olinger her name Martina
How?
Martina how has just died at the age of 97 and and the name Martina was just
Starting to come into the lexicon at the time. I think I think that's about the time
Or maybe it was a little even a little later. Maybe it's after it got out of high school
I can't remember but
Maybe the first time I heard the name Martina was when we found out that was her name Martina
How but she went by Mrs. How and she went by Mrs. How at a time where
believe that women were still identifying themselves as Mizz M. I S S or
Mrs. The MS maybe came in about that time
But unmarried women didn't really at that time
Seemed to have any qualms about identifying themselves as miss she was definitely Mrs. How and I thought that she was married
I she never talked about her personal life. So I didn't know anything about it
I don't know anybody that did and she would call you by your last name
That's 15 years old taken chemistry scared to death because the course was really tough and she was a tough teacher and
She would address all the boys by their last name. I think she would call the girls
Mizz like miss and their last name, but the boys just last name
Tough and and same thing if you complained she'd say well, you know in 10 years
This isn't gonna matter to you so get over it
I was basically her message and I wondered you know, why was she so tough? Well, I finally find out in her obituary
What a life she had and and how tough it must have been for her at that time in the early 70s
She was a single mom and she was a single mom because her husband was killed in the korean war
She uh, she married uh, luis how and in
51 luis how was killed in action during the korean war leaving her to raise three children including twins as a single mom
And so you know at that time they must have been teenagers
Which are tough to raise as it is and raising them as a single mom at that time, which was very unusual
I I respect her and respected her at the time even though I was
afraid of her and and
And at times cursed her under my breath, but now I look back on this and I go
Oh my
Look at what this woman was dealing with at the time and how she dealt with it
She raised three children taught school at bcc for 30 years
and uh
And leaves behind an incredible legacy and and living a life to the age of 97 just uh
Just unbelievable
So if if you were at bcc at at that time in the 60s 70s or 80s, you probably know the name
Mrs. How she was known as general how from time to time and and she had obviously a military background with her husband
uh being in the army and uh left to raise three children and have a career
Again at that time very very difficult. So rest in peace. Mrs. How I've always had respect for you
But now I have even more respect for Mrs. How all right the uh, excuse me schedule news
um
This just came out and on new year's eve
Which is I believe it's a weekday. Let me check the calendar here
But there is a 425 game on new year's eve
Which is going to be played between two marquee teams and two marquee quarterbacks
Yeah, no the 31st is a is a sunday. Okay, so it's it's it's I would yes a regular nfl sunday
Um
Is that right?
Yeah, yeah regular sunday. So it's it's the 31st and uh and it's going to be a
I guess a prime time game considered prime time
Uh, and it's since an adi at can sis city. That's just been announced. They've also announced the international schedule
And yes, it's it's funny you think with trevor lorance
That the dagwars wouldn't have as much trouble selling tickets
But they are going to play not one but two games in london
They're going to play the first one there this year, which would be october 1st against atlanta
Had wembley stadium and they're going to stick around london for another week
Before they take on the buffalo bills. So again another marquee quarterback match up there as uh as as trevor lorance
Will be playing against josh allen that that will be a game of of great interest
And then the ravens play the third game overseas this year against the titans october 15th
That's in london and two games in frankfort
November 5th dolphins in chiefs and november 12th the colts and the patriots
There are no games this year in mexico because they're renovating the stadium
And uh, the jaguars were actually supposed to play two games in wembley in 2020
But those games were canceled because of the uh, groona pandemic now
Um, that's before they had trevor lorance before they became a playoff team
Uh, I wonder if they're regretting
Uh, you know sending out home games overseas, but uh, that's what they're going to do
It'll be two games there, uh, and they're going to stick around for a week in london to play those games
Um, and we'll get the full schedule tomorrow tomorrow night. I uh, I don't anticipate
The commanders having many prime time games. I would imagine they'll have a maybe a sunday night game
Uh, I would think
That they'll resume them playing on thanksgiving day in dallas
They haven't done that in a couple of years and that's always a big ratings thing
The cowboys and well used to be cowboys red skins. I assume they're still
Interest in washington and dallas playing and that'll be uh likely on thanksgiving day
And uh, they do not have to be on a thursday night game
That's uh, that's also a new rule for the schedule that not every team has to be on thursday night
So it's possible. Uh, they won't be on uh, this year on thursday
All right, uh, ten years ago
Dan snider who is the owner of the then redskins
Said to usa today
We will never change the name of the team as a lifelong redskins fan
I think that the redskins fans understand the great tradition
And what it's all about and what it means so we feel pretty fortunate to be just working on next season
Well, he's asked what if the football team loses an ongoing federal trademark lawsuit
Would you consider changing the name?
And he said and these are the words that have followed him since this little interview that he did
We will never change the name. It's that simple never you can put it in caps
So this is may of
2013
And he's he's got his his dander up. He's he's ready to fight this and in fact it
It went to court and uh, it was ultimately ruled that uh, that the team could keep its trademark rights
I think they
They cited a group of asian singers
Known as the slants
I think that that was part of the uh, the case that was made and uh, and they were allowed to uh,
To keep the trademark rights. It was never a case of the court saying you have to take away the name redskins
But it was a matter of trademark. So that in other words, if you lose the trademark rights
Uh, you or I could set up a t-shirt stand on kinetic at avenue and sell redskins t-shirts without any trademark
Rights fees paid we would just be able to do that. So that's that's what that was all about
But the lawyer successfully fought that off and then in the ensuing years probably
You know two or three years after this the washington post did a poll
And they found that uh nine out of ten
Native americans either didn't have a problem with the name redskins
Or they supported the name. They thought it gave them pride
And
I was really swayed by this. Uh, I thought well, okay. Maybe this is this is much to do about nothing
but uh, but ultimately the name was changed and it was changed not because of people getting woke
It happened about the same time as the george floyd tragedy
But
What was happening and what what ultimately uh has led i think really has played a big role
in the ouster of dans nider as as owner of the team
Is that
It during the pandemic
He attempted to use the pandemic as a reason not to pay his limited partners their dividend shares what they were doing
So that created a whole war there and first to to take a shot was
Fred smith the chairman of fed x and they said well
Uh, if you don't change the name of the team
We're going to remove our sponsorship from the stadium
And he got pepsi and nike to say pretty much the same thing and that was it that that's what that's what led to uh,
The name change and then ultimately the post reporting came out about the sexual harassment
But this was first this was before that
Uh, this was this was the other minority partners putting the pressure on snider to change the name because of economics
Not because it was the right thing to do and so here we are there's two name changes
Later and uh, I have been told by a very very reliable source
That the name commanders is is going to change
Uh, it'll change with new ownership now as I understand
You have to keep a name for five years
Well, the the copyright work and the legal work takes two years as we found out so
Whoever takes over the team, uh, will have had the name commanders for one year next year will be two
And by the time they come up with a new name, which you know, I I'm not opposed to
I mean, I'm not really opposed to commanders. The only thing that that really feels bad about commanders is it's associated with with dan and tanya snider
And so whenever I hear the name, I think of the two of them standing there in those silly letterman's jackets
Trying to get everybody excited about the new name
And so they have to be they have to be fumigated too that all of that
Anything that was associated with this franchise
Into the ownership of dan snider other than some players like terry mcclaurin
Uh, they have to go it just it just has to be out
And so I think the name will will change
Ultimately and they will get a new stadium. I'm also told that the uh, that the deal to have the stadium built in dc is is very likely to happen
Uh, this this source is to me very reliable on these sort of things and uh, he believes that it is going to happen now
Uh, what the interesting follow-up on the snider never quote that came out in in usa today 10 years ago
Just a few weeks later. He sent out a letter to fans addressing the situation
And this is uh, it's it's always fun to look back on these things from snider as he was he was acting like the tough guy
And they're not going to make me do it, you know, and that and that story that came out from don vin nata
Last fall where snider walks around his suite saying they're not going to f with me
This is that dan snider addressing the fans
The letter says I respect the opinions of those who disagree
I want them to know that I do hear them and and I will continue to listen and learn
But we cannot ignore our 81 year history or the strong feelings of most of our fans as well as native americans throughout the country
After 81 years, the team named redskins continues to hold the memories in meaning of where we came from
Who we are and who we want to be in years to come
Uh, he said as a a red skin is a football player a red skin is our fans the washington redskins fan base
It represents honor. It represents respect that represents pride. Hopefully winning
Yeah, hopefully winning dan hopefully winning
Uh, I I think you're going to have some people that feel a certain way absolutely and we respect those opinions
But I hope they respect our opinion the respect needs to be mutual and I hope they do
Yeah, dan you're all about respect, aren't you?
Uh, he went on to say uh with with an interview that he did with chick ernandez
Uh later that year he said I always say this in life truth is on your side
I believe in that and the logo in 1971 was helped
The design by the head of black feet nation the chair of black feet nation at the time
Walter black e wetsl
They designed the logo and the truths on your side. I believe in that so much passionately
We wonder our fans as well as everyone else to know the historical facts because it's important
I'm the steward of this franchise not for long to any boy
Uh most important to me are the fans the alumni the players and we owe all of us a great
gratitude to what was built in this franchise. It's to john riggins. It's the sunny jurgensen
It's the sammy ball. It's to bobby micha. Bobby micha list to me an icon
And the name of the franchise and who we played for and who he respects. It's the washington redskins everyone's so proud of that
We owe so much to the alumni. We'll let it be pointed out here
That uh at that point bobby micha'll had left the organization
He uh had left saying that he was treated as an intern for 35 years and
All this respect that snider said he had for bobby micha'll
Well, they gave a backup tight end bobby micha's number in
2002 which bobby later said was the last straw
the last lack of respect that he got and he had to leave and I actually
Contacted carl swanson a number of times was at that time sniders p r guy and said
This is wrong bobby micha'll's number should not be worn by leonard stevens
Nobody ever responded to me. Nobody ever gave me any any
Anything on that and uh and he wore that number for the rest of the year and uh and to me
That's that was just so disrespectful to a great man who I got to know a little bit
Before he passed away a couple of years ago
This is the last thing he said the washington redskins team our fans and community have always believed our name represents honor respect and pride
Uh, and then he responded to the polling from the washington post that that survey that I referenced there nine out of ten
He says today's washington post polling shows native americans agree
We are gratified by this overwhelming support by the native american community and the team will proudly carry the redskins name
Yes, you will dan for four more years and then the name will change and it looks like it will change again
because
There there seems to be support and I think it's among the fan base too not not everybody
But nobody's really wrapped themselves around commanders. I don't think I don't think there's a strong base of people that are diehard commanders fans
Uh, there are people like me who rooted for the team wearing burgundy and gold
Uh satisfied with washington football team. I thought that was and I thought uh during that process tony cornheiser made a great point about this
He said no matter what the name is people will not like it
And people who rooted for the team known as the redskins are not going to embrace it
Just keep it as washington football team that way the only nickname they will have had while they were the moston braves for one year
But the only nickname they will have had is the one that people embraced while the team was going well now
I will say this I do not want and anybody that thinks
I or anyone else should be thinking the direction bringing back red skins. No, that should not happen
100% that should not happen and uh, you may have heard an interview that I did a few weeks ago with kevin blackstone
Who worked with a viva kepner on a very very convincing documentary?
With native americans who say the redskin name is is as bad as the n word
And it and it's very painful for them
And it was very painful during all of that process and the lengths that they had to go to to fight all of this
Before the the name finally toppled so I don't want that back
But i'm not in love with commanders if it stays commanders, that's okay
But uh, danny boy
10 years ago today you said and let me read that quote again. We will never change the name
It's that simple never you can use caps
You can print that in any language you want danny stiter
It's not your name anymore and it's not going to be your team
For too much longer as uh, the owner's meetings are due to get underway
Next week and uh and uh and from reading that and we can get into this more at another time
But reading this it looks like they're not following
The rules of team change ownership change to a t
They're doing everything they can to facilitate this quickly and it's possible that the Harris group by this time next week
We'll have control of the team keep your fingers crossed
They may not be fully approved as owners, but they may be able to do uh business as owners of the team
And I think that's what you hope for if you're still a fan of this organization
NFL schedule news is trickling out and there's something new to add to the schedule mix
Which we will give you when we return. It's the anti-polin show esp n 630
The anti-polin show on esp n 630 the sports capital
Got tony coming up today at 11 o'clock
He's also doing a show tomorrow the schedule tomorrow for the nfl is coming out at 7 o'clock
I believe or 8 o'clock on uh, I think both the nfl network or nfl network esp n one of the other
Uh, and we'll find out whatever you we know the opponents
But we'll find out when the games are scheduled how many prime time games they have and so the league is is teasing this out
They're giving you bits and pieces of uh, what's going to happen on the schedule
And the latest to come out in the last few minutes is that black friday game that you've been hearing about for amazon
Is going to feature erin rogers. What is shock the new york jets and the miami dolphins will play at three o'clock in the afternoon
Only on prime video. So uh, that will be the first ever
black friday game attractive quarterback match up assuming
Uh, toa makes it that far. Uh, you hope so. Uh, he's had all those concussion issues and injury problems
But uh, it would be toa against erin rogers the young and the old and all the attention of course is
Is lately on erin rogers. We'll see where he is
Uh, at that point in the season, but uh, that is the latest the giants will visit the eagles on christmas day
Uh, that's the latest that's come out. There's a new year's eve game
The uh, that's a sunday anyway, so I imagine they're gonna have a full schedule but uh, the
National game which will be on cbs will be sincinati at kansas city
Uh, so you have the great quarterback match up there also all the international games
Have been announced and uh, the big news there is jacksonville is going to play two of them back to back
october first
Against the falcons and then on october 8th
Against the bills and there are different stadiums first ones at wembley stadium
The second one is at toton ham and then uh, there will also be a game on the 15th at toton ham
The ravens are going to play there and the dolphins and chiefs match up in frankfort on november 5th and the colts and the patriots
Will match up on the following week in frankfort november the 12th no international game in mexico this year
Because they're doing renovations to the stadium and uh, again, we're going to get the whole thing
Oh, it's eight o'clock tomorrow not seven eight o'clock
Tomorrow we'll find out uh, what the full schedule is including what the commanders have and as these
National games start to fill up. Uh, we know now of course they're not going to be on the black friday game
Uh, they're not going to be in any of these international games
And now that every team doesn't have to be on thursday night. I think there's a possibility
They miss that but I would expect them to be playing on thanksgiving day against cal dallas
That that has been a matchup that's that's drawn great ratings. Although last year who
Giants and cal boys. They had an unbelievable number on thanksgiving day. I don't maybe try and run that back
I'm not sure but uh, but I would expect washington to be playing at dallas on thanksgiving day
Um a couple of things uh a spilling out from all this nba yak which uh, which I found interesting
Uh, because when these analysts go on they don't just talk about the match ups
They talk about other things so kenny smith who we just heard
Breakdown the uh the golden state series and he like tim legular thinks that that the warriors do have a chance to come from three
One down to beat the lakers
But uh in in the little schmooze fest that they had yesterday on the rich isen show
He gave you a little peek behind the curtain as to uh, what happens during the game
For the tnt crew, you know, they have a great pre in the post game show
All those guys have now been put in the hall of fame with ernie johnson and kenny smith and shack and barclay and uh and
kenny spith actually now has a book out
Uh, imagine it covers a lot of that of course his career too great player at north carolina and won a couple of championships in the nba
With the use in rockets, but uh, he he talked to rizin about what it's like while the games are going on
And what the crew does to occupy its time waiting for the post game. We have a green room in the back
That becomes uh the kid's clubhouse. Okay
And everything and anything is talked about as the games are going on as well. So it's uh
Multiple tv on
Sometimes 12 is 12 is a big hockey fan. Oh, so we got the hockey guys there
Plus he's there they're watching hockey and basketball simultaneously
And then on certain tuesdays when the baseball games are going on then it's a madhouse
Is there like a signed seating to shack have a seat that nobody sits in or charles
I'm sitting there. Hopefully well cause there's a seat that i've sat in
21 years all the satin in for at and and shack has sat in for 12 that no one and everyone knows never to sit
And and we always play around when someone new comes in we're like if one of us amissant. Oh, yeah, you can sit there
You know the person has to make that person move
That's my follow up
That was my last follow up question on this before we get to the actual nba action is like has there ever been a newbie
Like when i guess gretsky came in or something like that and he just sits down
Any guest that comes in
You know the seats are like super comfortable, but they are go i'm gonna sit here
and
And if and if someone sitting in charles is
seat
And i'm there already and my feet because we're right next to each other. Yes. He looks at me. He doesn't look at the person
He looks at
He looks at me like it's my fault that i let him do it and it's vice versa. So we play games with that
But yes, it is a size meeting you cannot sit at certain seats in that
But i understand that kenny because you know if you know that's charles's seat and charles isn't in there
You could save him the trouble of being the a-hole you're making him the a-hole you could save him
But isn't at the perfect of life that is true. That's my that is my purpose in life
Is to make charles the a-hole i get it very good
Yeah, 100% that's why your show so good for as long as it's been kenny and there's opportunity here sounds like now
With with probably what's said away from the camera
Uh, you couldn't put that on tnt but could you stream it?
Look at what the manning cast has opened up for
Television and we're seeing it with college games now
I think that's the wave of the future
and
Now tnt would have to weigh that because they're televising the game
So if you take the pre and the post game crew and you put a camera on them in this green room while they're watching the game
Uh, how much is that going to take away from the tv ratings or does it matter?
I don't know how they they calculate all this stuff is it just eyeballs on product whether it's streaming or
Over cable. Yeah, it's not air, but it's over cable on tnt hard to tell but
You would watch that right?
You would watch kenny and jack and barley watching games. Of course you would you would absolutely watch that
Uh, and if you stream it, you know, who cares about the language by the way speaking of that pat makkefi
Is reportedly looking to walk away from a 120 million dollar deal? I think it's fan duel that sponsors his show and go to esp n
and I I would imagine
That
All the f-bombs that go on with his show and his crew
Would have to change if they went to esp n or would they put that on some type of esp n streaming service?
I mean everything is in flux now. Everything is changing and
as much success as he's had and he's you know, he does work clean too because he's part of the
the the tailgate show that he does with the with the college game day crew for college football
But you know, is this is this the wave and and I think that if you put a camera in that green room and the things that barley would say
It would be unbelievable now. They may not agree to that
And they all make millions and millions of dollars
So, you know, you have to pay them a lot more to do it and that you know
There is some time that they have to have their private life and you know
And you don't want to say anything insensitive and and getting trouble for that and that so you would still have to edit yourself
Even though you you probably could use you could use f-bombs and s-bombs and things like that
But it just just opens up all kinds of possibility another thing that uh
Spilled out yesterday redgie miller who I think about this time of year is a regular on the dan patrick show
And yes, he looked at the series and analyzed them, but he also gave us this and with the draft coming up next month
It's it's something to think about
The question to uh to redgie from dan patrick is or was uh, is there anybody that you saw as a can't miss
Who missed coming in the nba and the answer that he gave
Actually surprised me. Uh, it's someone who was a local. This is uh redgie miller yesterday on the dan patrick show
On the player that was a can't miss the dead he bears the same name as mine and he was in my same draft
Redgie williams from george town. Do you remember redgie williams remember as a freshman?
He was he was on those great george talent teams. Yeah coach tomsen
Um, I believe one one championship with him
Um, he had all the talent could shoot play great defense could handle
Uh had length and I just thought for sure he was going to be an unbelievable pro
But for whatever reason it didn't pan out. Okay, but why is it you can be really good in college?
And you're playing the same game
But it doesn't translate into the nba
Because the nba is a different type of game is a different type of physicality
um
You know, that's a great question because players that were
Unbelievable college players and it is
Pretty much the same game, but it's played a different it's a much faster pace
Uh, the guys are bigger stronger. Yeah, and there's not a lot of room for error. So
You almost get left behind if you can't put
The page very quickly. Um not to say that redgie couldn't flip the page very quickly, but
Um, you sometimes you just get lost in the cracks, but like kevin love
How do you explain that?
But he was a good college player and but but good
But then he averaged like 25 and 13 or 27 and 13 and
Then he became a three point shooter. How do you explain that?
Learning to adapt with the times, uh, you know, I throw like brook lopas from no walkie
When he was at stanford him and his brothers. They were good. They were okay
But brook lopas transformed his game very much the same way kevin loved it his first like six or seven years
He shot like 53
His last seven years. He shot like almost a thousand threes
He transformed his game
Along with the the way the style of the nba. Yeah, that's a redgie miller and on on redgie williams
Remember he was a key player on the george town national championship team in 1984 as a senior
The 86 87 season. It was redgie in the miracles. I believe they made the sweet 16
He was the best player on that team and everything
Revolved around redgie williams and that's part of the reason that he was the number four pick of the draft now part of this is where you land
And he unfortunately landed with the l.a. Clippers the biggest dumpster fire in the nba at that time
And as the number four pick just didn't pan out there
Bounced around he played for six teams over a 10 year nba career he did last 10 years
But was kind of in and out cut a couple of times and uh fringe player here and there he averaged 12 and a half points
A game didn't make any all-star teams
But as a college player was just spectacular
He was part of that great dunbar team out of baltimore that had mugsie bogs and uh david windgate guys like that and he uh
He was an absolute superstar in college
Reggie redgie miller is absolutely right about redgie williams
And as a pro he just was just a guy
You know just a guy who hung around for 10 years
And I thought he would be a great player and you know some of it too is is timing that the league is different now
Uh, he was a great shooter could he
Today be uh be a guy who would be a wing player who's who's putting up threes all the time the the three point shot
Although it was in the nba at that point for seven or eight years
It just wasn't the weapon that it is now and would he have developed into a a great three point shooter
You know a lot of it is is timing and again place that you land and when you are an outstanding college player
If you're that good, you're going to be going to a bad team
That's the way it works and he went to a a bad team in the clippers
And it just never got off the ground for him
But uh boy as a georgetown player
I I would put redgie williams
Wait if if if you had to to rank them in terms of their college careers
Uh, you might put him top five
Youing number one
Iverson may be number two
Uh, alanzo morning three
Uh, maybe de kenbe matumbo fits in there somewhere and uh, you know, maybe there's a couple of other guys that i'm missing
But I would think that redgie williams would be a top five player in the history of georgetown basketball
Which has an unbelievable tradition of not just producing great college players, but producing pros guys who go on to have great
Pro careers, uh like iverson like youing like morning, uh like matumbo those guys and they all got better
Especially the big men at georgetown every every year they got better and there are a couple of guys that came out of there that
Had no business being in the nba
But uh, but made it for a few years jahide white played in the nba don read played in the nba
me tomsen could coach big men no question about it and uh, and if you ever go into mcdonald jim
You'll see the jursies of all the players who made it in the nba and uh, there's some great ones there
There's some hall of famers up there and redgie williams as a college player
One of the greats to ever come out of the hilltop
Coming up. We will get to uh, what was said yesterday by the espn crew about sam howl and uh, why dan orlofsky likes him so much
Also orrel's preview austin hayes outfielder dude to join us. Don't go away. It's the anti-polin show espn 630
vnd pull-in show we got to go after this and everything we got they're gonna come with everything they got i'll start on by sand
i'm bored i'm broke and i'm back vnd pull-in show on espn 630 starts
Right now. Yeah orrel's preview 1030 outfielder austin hayes dude to join us also mike elias the general manager of the team held the news conference yesterday and uh
She had some light on a few things. They made a bunch of moves
Uh dropped a couple guys down and brought a couple guys up. He said the things may be fluid this year, but uh
He's got a 40 man roster that he has a lot of faith in and and one of the other things that elias said was
Yeah, we're playing well now, but we're really young team
So we should get better as this season goes along
Now the dog days of august get a lot of teams and you'll have young teams that start out with a lot of enthusiasm
And then they kind of hit a wall and the orrel's did go through a three-game losing streak
But they won last night and uh still very much in the mix. It's it's early. It's uh, you know, not even mid-may yet, but
Uh, they have played very very well and uh, they got a well-pitched game last night as they uh as they won four to two
Against the rays which have been the uh the hottest team in baseball as i mentioned the
Schedule stuff is is trickling out as we go along here so that black friday game, which i never thought washington was going to be a part of
That's now out and that's going to be on amazon. It'll be three o'clock. It's the jets and the dolphins
So you get erin rogers there that's going to be a bonanza day
Four for amazon is uh every commercial will be you know black friday sales order this order that
Uh, so that's that's going to be huge for them. Then we have on new year's eve, which is a sunday
Anyway, so i believe that's going to be a full sunday schedule like i can't imagine that they would they would change any of that
So uh, that's going to be a regular sunday
But the the big window game is going to be since an atty
Uh at can's a city at 425 on cbs
And so you have burrow and mohomes matching up there and uh, and then you have um, you know the the international schedule
Which i guess the news there is that jaxonville is playing twice in this so
Uh, they've got games back to back in london though in different stadiums
They play october first against atlanta at wembley stadium. They stick around in london for another week and play the bills
at uh tottonham
Stadium and so you got the the great uh, trevallorence
Match up against josh alan that is that's going to be big. Uh, that'll be a not you know
That's gonna be nine 30 in the morning. So and and i believe this too. We're talking about
Six games five games in london and germany this year
I believe we're not that many years away from having an international game every week
And a football sunday
Which now starts at one o'clock and ends like at midnight with the sunday night game
We'll start at nine 30 in the morning and we'll end at midnight and the numbers will be great
And there will be people that will watch all of it. Yeah rex you shaking your head, right?
Are we clear of course nine 30 for you on a sunday nine 30 for you up on us nine 30 on a sunday
Maybe i'll miss the first quarter first quarter. Yeah, so
I mean this is so much only so much couch time you could do but hey, you know
The product is is irresistible people watch all of that no games in mexico this year because they're doing renovations for the stadium and actually
Uh, this was not supposed to be the first year that jackson bill would be playing two games at wembley stadium
They were scheduled to play twice in 2020
But uh, that was canceled because of the pandemic the the interesting thing is is they didn't have trevallorence then
Uh, and they weren't a playoff team
Now that they are are they going to be as anxious to give up these games for london? I don't know
I mean and also there is still this out there. I don't think it's going to happen
But the fact that they're playing back-to-back weeks. I think they're dipping their toe in this water
Could there be a team
That is based in london could could that happen and could they adjust the schedule
So that they're not back and forth like they play let's say they play
Uh, four games at home just maybe three games at home to start the season
Then they go on the road and they make sure that they play
Like three games on the road, but they're all in like the same time zone
So if it's east coast or west coast and they just stay
It's kind of kind of a disadvantage too, but the nfl doesn't really care
You know, they they basically said to the players who complained about all the thursday night games the thursday night game every week
Shut up. Here's a billion dollars go away and they did and uh, and not every team is supposed to be on thursday
Night, so when we get the full schedule, which will include the commanders tomorrow
Uh, it's possible that they will not have a thursday night game, but
I'm anticipating that they're going to be playing on thanksgiving. I think that's uh, that's pretty much
A given there. I mentioned the death of joe cap yesterday
The former quarterback in the minnesota vikings took them to super bowl four
Uh, and then later became a coach at cal and he coached ron revera and revera talked to pro football talk about it
And he said that uh, he really had a big impact on his life. He was um, he was jacano
And uh, and he had come from a tough background
Ron revera came from military family a little bit different
But uh, he stressed education to him and he and he stressed out tough
You had to be to play in the nfl and he said he really had a big impact and and cap
Cap was the coach of the cal bears when they had the banders on the field play
He played I think he was there like five years and I had some other
Coaching gigs and then had had dementia apparently was suffering from dementia for like last 15 years of his life and uh,
Also passing away, uh, the other day or yesterday was denny crumb who was 86 years old
And he's most famous for his time at louisville. He was there for 30 years
And and pushed out the door for rick patino, you know, this this is a guy who was a great great coach and had an
Incredible win percentage over the 30 years his record was 675 and 295
He got to multiple final fours and won the nc
A championship in 1980 and 1986 and pat 40's got a nice column at s i dot com about him
pointing out that he was he was he was a coach and a disciplinarian but
he led his players play freely and
They were one of the early teams to embrace the high flying style
That's become so much a part of basketball and they were when they won the title in 1980 with their star player darryl riffonth
The doctors of dunk. That's what they were called
And they made it back to the final four in 1983 though. They didn't win, but this if you ever see it
Tape of this this this is one of the most unbelievable games. I have ever watched it was five slamma jamma
Against louisville now the doctors of dunk had moved on griffin was was in the nba by then but
He had great players who played above the rim and if you watch this game
They forget the threes
They didn't even have the three point shot in college basketball in those days
The idea was to get to the rim so you had you know, cli drexler and larry misha for houston
And you had great stars for louisville not of them. I don't think ever made it big in the nba
but uh, they they were
Incredible to watch and that i made some forgotten game because it wasn't a championship game
But oh boy if you if you watch the youtube highlights you will get excited because that was that was a game that was just
Every every trip down the floor boom boom boom and then houston heavily favored two nights later to beat north carolina state
wound up losing ironically on a duck by lorenzo charles
Uh who who dunked it who dunked it in front of kimalajuan just uh amazing
Anyway, um the background for crumb to me is interesting. He's from california
native of the san franando valley
Went to a san franando high school played uh basketball there was all league as a senior went to pierce
junior college in in woodlands hills that
in those days
Most athletes went to junior college in california
Oj simpson played junior college football before he won the hyzeman trophy at usc that was that was a very common thing
In those days and he went to go play at ucla
In 1957 for a coach by the name of john wouldn't now. What's what's really fascinating about wouldn't
Who's regarded by many as the greatest maybe not even just the greatest college coach who ever lived the greatest coach period
He won 10 national championships in 12 years
But
Here's the difference in in the way college basketball was in those days now
They didn't have as many teams in the nc double a tournament didn't have 68
but
uh
Nowadays there's an expectation that you get there often or you don't stay
and john wouldn't
coached for 15 years
At ucla before he ever won a national championship 15 years he made the tournament only five times over those 15 years
And then once he started winning he won 10 out of 12
Uh, and part of the reason that he continued to win
As he got older was denny crumb joined his staff and he was a great recruiter
And as as i've read one of the few times
That john wouldn't ever went to see a recruit he didn't go to new york to see luell cinder play
You know if you if you wanted to go to ucla
You you called you called him and said you wanted to go
But denny crumb who did the recruiting for him during a three-year period from 68 to 71
Said you got to go see this kid at helix high in san diego named waltom
And that's one of the few times that uh john would never showed up at a game
And it was at the urging of denny crumb
I don't think there was any doubt the waltom was going to go to ucla
But that just shows you what what influence he had then he takes over at luerville in 1971 and they're uh,
They're a regular tournament team and uh, i remember the uh the 86 team
Uh, that was that was the last championship that he won
Milt wagner was one of the stars on that and purvis elison who was a freshman
Was the mvp of the final four?
And that team beat duke that was shashewski's first final four team with billis and
alorie and johnny dawkins and those guys and uh, and and it was a it was a good game
It was a close game
But uh, but luerville won the game and denny crumb with the second national championship and continued to have good teams
But uh, but the school got anxious and didn't have much respect for him and shoved them out the door
Uh in 2001 after 30 seasons there so they could get rick patina
denny crumb passing away at the age of 86
Some football stuff and it's it's babble time in the nfl
Um, you know, the these shows that used to disappear in the off season in the nfl
They're just year round so it's just year round babble about football even though there's really
Nothing going on now except for off-season workouts. I don't think anybody's even had a mini camp yet. Maybe they start this weekend
Uh, but uh, this was the conversation yesterday about uh, about sam howl
And uh, this is the crew that was talking about it
It's dan or lofsky mean a kind and adam shefter on and especially or lofsky on how much they like
sam howl as the quarterback for washington
er eric bianomy really, you know the offensive coordinator comes over from kansas city and the thing that I love about the marriage is
If you had to ask me what I thought eb was great at it's the rpo the run past option kansas city has excelled at it for years
And I think I think i love about it the most is that there's layers into our levels to these rpo's
There's actual past concepts attached to them
What is sam howl majoring in north carolina rpo that had actual past concepts attached to them and I think the
marriage of a quarterback that has a ton of reps doing it and great feel and understanding for them
And these unique rpo's with a coach that loves to design them and create them and dial them up is ideal
Now the next level is terry mcclorn and jahan dotson
Hopefully with for their rpo offense getting a ton of one-on-ones
And those one-on-ones space being created by some of the condensed splits that we saw with kansas city
And those players getting a ton of one-on-one opportunities with passes that aren't
Highly difficult right the rpo you get players coming downhill you got a wrapping or a slant or a quick little fade with space
I think that's a big deal for their offense and then brian robinson should have great numbers
and leverage to run on
Yeah, I'm a huge fan of sam howl his
Tape before the year before he came out in the draft when he had dami brown and the better offensive line
Was really impressive in terms of his athleticism and arm strength
but
Are we sure he's the starting quarterback is my question because they keep praising him and obviously they didn't go out and get a quarterback
This year, but they also signed jacobie bersett to a contract worth
I believe up to eight million dollars which would be very high-end backup money
And if they had a true quarterback competition in washington this summer and jacobie bersett played the way he did
last season in cleveland
Async ubr seventh devia fourth and cpo eklesha presented to our expectation those are all stats that account for
Competition and reflect how well he played
I'm not so sure sam howl would win and that's not a ding on him
It's more just acknowledging the fact that jacobie bersett played well last year and for me
This is a it's a
Important question that washington has to resolve soon because
The offenses for these two players are very different everything sam or dan just described for sam powell the rpo's
Um, you know the boot you're gonna put him on the move a lot. There's going to be a very expansive design quarterback run game
That's not what you call for jacobie bersett who's a traditional pocket passer
So
I think washington has to decide sooner rather than later what approach they want to take this season
Well, I mean a first and foremost that deal with jacobie bersett was up to 10 million dollars
So it sounds like they're trying to figure out. Oh, good. We could pay him like a starter
But he might be a backup. We don't know yet
But on the other hand
They have stood firmly behind
Sam how and have made it known that this is the guy that they plan to kind of take a long look at and even have is
Their starting quarterback now. Let's just say sam how does hit and again
We go back to this offseason washington never seemed to make any attempts to go after any other quarterback
Some free agency trade for a guy pursue any quarterback in the draft they seem kind of content
Riding it out with jacobie bersett and sam how but follow me now if sam how
Happens to hit then the washington commander said the mother look because they then have him under a rookie contract
For the next two years in a competitive nfc east that is a huge advantage if and it's a huge if if he turns out to be
A good nfl starting quarterback. So in a way they can roll the dice
Take a look see if he is what they thought he was last preseason when he kind of flash kind of pop kind of was pretty good
And if he works then they really have a big advantage the next couple of years
They're also in an unusual circumstance because all the focus is going to be on ownership
That's going to distract everybody from whatever's going on on the field. So it was really a nothing to lose year
So that that sort of makes sense to have them the only thing is this is the second straight year
That the word if is capitalized because last year we went into the season
Well if karson wince if if he gets back to the form that he had in philadelphia five or six years ago
Then oh boy. Are they lucky they've got a quarterback who's an elite player with a reasonable contract 28 million dollars a year
Well, the if turned into a very small if and and turned into a no that he was bad
And all the bad things that we heard not necessarily about being a locker room guy
But that became irrelevant when he stunk he just he just took sacks all the time
And and wasn't good and in a game that they had a chance to win and get into the playoffs. He was horrendous
Absolutely horrendous. And so that that's gone and you know, I don't know if sam how is going to be any good
Uh, but I think that there is the possibility he can be good and the small chance that that can happen with
The situation this organization is in why not?
But if you if you're basing this and I think too much of this been based on
Oh, well, you know, look at how he looked against dallas with dallas was something to play for
If you watch that game
Dallas to me looked disinterested and I think all the players understood
That the giants were going to rest all their players against the eagles
That they knew the giants had no shot
To win that game and and that was the only way that dallas was going to win the division if somehow
The giants resting on their starters
Be to team that would make it to the super bowl
And that the cowboys could win the game and win the division get a first round by and
That that really was not realistic and I think the players understood that dallas didn't really play well at all in that game
Didn't look good
And uh, and and washington looked okay
And how completed all of 11 passes in this game
other interesting thing and this is just just the the evolution of the times but
And doug Williams was was a dropback passer when he played with with washington
He was not a running quarterback, but the traditional thinking
About african-american quarterbacks as oh, yeah, they're runners. They're they're running quarterbacks. They're not necessarily
uh great passors
And what you heard them say there is that uh jacobie percet is a traditional
Dropback passer and sam howl is going to use more rpo's and and things like that and it's it's 100 correct
But it's just indicative of of the way we used to think about
Quarterbacks, which was so foolish in that you could have
Great african-american quarterbacks who who could run from time to time, but could also be great dropback passes
Warren moon is in the hall of fame
For a long career in the nfl never made it to a super bowl
But didn't get an opportunity to play in the nfl for six years
He he won a bunch of great cups in canada before everybody woke up and said oh, yeah, I guess he is a really good quarter
Nobody drafted him. He was a great player at the university of washington
Nobody drafted him when he came out of college had to go play in canada
And once his contract was up came to uh play in the nfl and was great with the oilers and had some good years with the vikings
I think played with the chiefs a little he played like till he was like 43 years old something like that
And uh, and he was he was a hall of fame
Quarterback and so when you you talk about african-american quarterbacks now
You talk about them as being different and and and the way that they play isn't necessarily
The traditional thinking about them and that's uh, I think a good thing
Uh, this is uh, this is boy. This is really a troubling story
Um, and I remember when this this came out last year the buffalo bills use the draft pick
to take a punner out of san diego state named matt ariza
And uh, it wasn't long before there were reports that uh, he had been involved in a gang rape at a party
Uh, the previous fall october
2021 and uh, apparently there were no charges filed at the time
And once this came out, uh, the bills had no choice but to release him
Well, now it's come out in the wash
That matt ariza was not involved in this and was not even at the party
When this alleged gang rape took place
Uh, he reported left the party at 12 30 in the morning and the rape occurred at 1 30 am according to the video time stamps
Uh, that were were available from surveillance video that was recovered
Uh, and that uh, and that you know the bills finding out that he had been involved in this they released him august 27th
Uh two days after a lawsuit was filed accusing him of having sex with a then 17 year old girl
Who was under the age of consent in california
The lawsuit states that ariza who was 21 at the time led the girl to the side of the house
Told her to perform oral sex on him before they had sexual intercourse
According to the lawsuit ariza then took her inside the home where at least three other men including
The other two defenders named in the suit former Aztec teammate zaviar leonard and nolan
Ounco were located and she was repeatedly raped for an hour and a half
Again, he was not even there now riza has filed a claim against san diego state university for damage to his reputation
This cost him a year in the nfl and and i don't i don't blame the buffalo bills for doing what they did
Because they were working with the information that they had at the time
And you just you know, you just can't have this but boy. This is this is
Sounds in many ways like the the duke case the duke lacrosse team
Uh, falsely accused of uh of raking raping a woman who had who had made the whole thing up
Uh that she had appeared as a dancer at a party and claimed that the whole team had raped her except for the
One african-american on the team and there was a rush to judgment and i read a book about this
There was a rush to judgment and the the season was shut down
They they did not have a season the players were later acquitted
And uh those who who wanted to come back for that year of eligibility could
And a number of them did they made it to the championship game
But uh, but lost to john's hockens and uh, you know, it's it's it's just a horrible thing when you're i mean
It's a horrible thing that happened here
But it's it's horrible that he was accused of doing something that he was not even present
When it happened and uh, and he's you know, it'd be interesting to see what happens out of this lawsuit
But uh, you know and and people will will continue to look at him
And and not know all the facts of this, you know, it's the people remembered the name from oh, yeah
That's the punter who raped a 17-year-old girl. Well, he didn't he wasn't even there and uh now has all the charges
all the all the
The the lawsuit guys there were never any charges here, but there was a lawsuit. Uh, he's now
He's now been off the hook for this. Um, one other thing here
Um, and this is a fun story before we get to oriel's preview coming up
The dodgers are playing a series in milwaukee this week and they're staying at the fister hotel
The fister hotel was built in 1893. It has a reputation for being haunted
And nobody's ever seen any ghost there, but
Mookie bets
As decided i'm not taking any chances
So he got an air b&b for him and friends and they'll stay there while the series goes on
Uh, he said he stayed at the venoy in st. petersburg, which is also supposedly haunted didn't see any ghosts
But said he couldn't sleep and rather than ghost sleep was worrying about ghosts in the fister hotel
Uh, he's staying at uh at an air b&b with friends and this is an apples to apples
But one of the things that really broke off the relationship between abe polan and michael jordan when jordan was a player the first year
Uh, and they only play in portland once a year because it's a west coast team
But the then wizards were the the wizards then were the only team in the nba
That would stay in the hotel at the airport, which was owned by abe's brother harreld who's also since passed away
And uh, and because of his loyalty to his brother, you know abe said well when we go play in portland
That's where we stay and i've stayed in that hotel actually and it's you know, it's a nice hotel
It's not a five star hotel or anything like four star
Uh jordan the bus pulls up and as the story goes and i think uh my friend st
Buckans can corroborate this the bus pulls up and jordan takes one look at the airport hotel
I think it was an airport sharitan and he said no no no no
And he told the bus driver to drive to some fancy down h downtown hotel put down his credit card and paid for the whole team and
embarrassed abe embarrassed his brother and things were were never the same after that um, that's a little bit different than this but
Sometimes sometimes hotels play a play a role in all of this. I don't think the sharitan was haunted
I just don't think it met the michael jordan's standards
So they stayed in the hotel, which I guess
The bowl stayed at when he uh, he had played in the nba a few years earlier
And uh, and I just you know, I thought of it this way
Look, you know mookie bets he can certainly afford an air bnb
uh, but you know, uh, the fact that the hotel is haunted he's he's lucky that the
That the brewers don't play in this in the same division as as the dodgers because that might be that might be trouble going there
Rather often but uh, no, you will not see you will not see mookie bets
Roman the halls drinking his starbucks at the fister hotel while the dodgers play there
This week want to thank austin hays for coming on today and uh, and joining us for ariles preview enjoyed that
Thanks to rex mid-term for running the show. Thanks to all of you. Listen tony is coming up next and i'll see you tomorrow morning at 9 a.m
