The Philadelphia Phillies clinched the top NL wildcard spot with a dramatic walkoff in extra innings. A big night for Brianna Stewart, who was named MVP before the Liberty, get a playoff win. And Aaron Rodgers calls on the Jets to grow up and come together already. From Wondering, I'm Sarah Cazal. And I'm John Gonzalez. It's Wednesday, September 27th, and this is starting 5. 5 sports stories to start your day. All right, we begin today's episode with baseball and the NL wildcard race. And on Tuesday, the defending National League champs punched their ticket to a second straight postseason when your Phillies, John, beat the pirates at home in extras 3-2. Sure did. Had to do it with a little drama and flair, Sarah. It's the only way they know. Of course. All right. So with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning and a ghost runner on second, it was Rookie Yohan Rohas, who stepped to the plate. Now Rohas has had a very good season since being called up earlier this year, but he's mostly known for his defense. But on Tuesday night, he did it with his bat. Bounce her back toward the middle, linking his center field of base hit. Popchains come at home, the throne of the plate, not in time. The Phillies are going back to the postseason. What I finished for the Phillies, that's the first time in franchise history that they've clinched a playoff spot with a walkoff. The last time anybody else pulled that off in baseball, it was the Yankees in 2021. So with that win and because the Braves came from behind to beat the Cubs, the Phillies are now locked into the top wild card spot, which means they'll host their three game first round series in Philadelphia. Now Chicago's loss also helped the Brewers when the NL Central on Tuesday, despite Milwaukee losing to the Cardinals, but I'm sure they'll take it either way as for the rest of the NL contenders, or basically down to your diamondbacks, the Cubs, the Marlins and the Reds, all of whom are bunched up and fighting for the final two wild card slots, super fun race. Yeah, really fun race to watch it down through the final week of the regular season. Switching gears now, unfortunately on Tuesday, baseball also lost a beloved hall of famer Orioles legend Brooks Robinson died at the age of 86 in a joint statement his family and the team said they are, quote, deeply saddened to share the news of his passing. Robinson spent his entire 23 year career with the team, winning two World Series, making 18 All-Star appearances and winning the AL MVP in 1964. All right, now to the WNBA, we were treated to a fun one in Brooklyn as the Liberty and the Sun duked it out in game two of their semifinal series, and it was the Liberty holding on 84 to 77 to even this best of five series up at one game a piece. Yeah, we're going to get into the details of this game in a second, but we have to start with New York's Brianna Stewart, who before the game was voted WNBA MVP for the second time in her career. Stewart averaged a career best 23 points per game this regular season as she guided the Liberty to the two seed behind the Las Vegas Aces. Stewart also set a WNBA record with four games of 40 plus points this year. Funnily enough, in game two on Tuesday night, Stewart scoring was nothing to write home about, nothing to podcast about. She finished with 11 points on three of 13 shooting from the field and just hit one of four shots from three, but she made her presence felt everywhere else with 11 points, five assists, and a Liberty playoff record, five blocks. Here is Stewart stuffing Connecticut's Olivia Nelson Adota under the basket. Wow, Brianna Stewart, first team all defense, holy cow, yeah, Holy cow is right. That was emphatic. That block stamped a 14-3 run by New York in the third quarter to shift the momentum their way and give them a lead they would hold on to through the end of the game. The final dagger for New York came in the fourth quarter courtesy of Bonagia Laney with under three minutes to go. That was Laney's fifth three and her 20th point on the night, her offensive burst helping New York grab a much needed win after a tough game won in this series. Now they had to Connecticut for the next two games with game three coming up on Friday. Yeah, good series so far. This game also featured Connecticut's Alyssa Thomas who finished second behind Stewart in the MVP voting. She only put up 10 points on Tuesday, but she did add nine assists and eight boards. And in Tuesday's other playoff action was the ace is beating the wings at home to take a two o' lead in that series. Okay, turning to football, the New York Jets had very high expectations coming into this season, but not a lot has gone right for them so far, John. Yeah, understatement. Yeah, on Tuesday, though, a guy by the name of, I want to make sure I'm getting this right. A a Ron Rogers nailed it, spoke up and said the team needs to snap out of it and stop the infighting. Yeah, taking a break from rehabbing his Achilles injury to say knock it off already and get it together. Hmm. As you mentioned, not the best season so far for the Jets per usual. They won their opener after Rogers got hurt with a dramatic kick return in overtime against the bills. But since then, they got hammered by the cowboys on the road and then even worse. They lost on Sunday at home to their previously winless AFC East rivals, New England Patriots, who beat the Jets for the 15th straight time that has got to sting. Not surprisingly, that has not created the best atmosphere around the Jets and people have noticed, including Rogers. Here he is on Pat McAfee's ESPN show on Tuesday, imploring the team to stop bickering. You know, there's been, I think, too many little side conversations and we just need to grow up a little bit on offense and lock in and do our jobs, everybody and knock point fingers at each other. And that's everybody, you know, we don't point fingers at the coach and staff, don't point fingers at each other. Just get back to work and get the job done. So far, they have not gotten the job done, particularly quarterback Zach Wilson, who threw through for just 157 yards and was sacked three times against the Pats. Following that game, head coach Robert Sala once again said Wilson is their guy, which prompted Hall of Fame legend Joe name at the come off the top rope. The only quarterback to win a Super Bowl for the franchise absolutely shredded the decision and Wilson in a radio interview on Monday. So hey, Aaron Rogers, any thoughts on that? Always, and I'd like to see everybody stick together on fan base, our former players and our current players because too much negativity and the world is crashing down after three weeks. Long season. So let's just take a couple breaths. All right. And then let's, you know, it's going to be some fun things on Sunday, I mean, Sarah Rogers isn't wrong here. They do need to relax. They do need to take some breaths. But I would like to point out that Rogers is telling everybody to stick together while also calling out the fans and the former players and the current players, which I love the irony. But I'm sure the jets are going to get this together, Sarah, they got this. Yeah. If there's something that the jets do well, let's get it together. One more note for the jets from Tuesday, the franchise announced on Tuesday night that they will bring in journeyman quarterback Trevor Simeon to join the practice squad. He's actually returning to the jets. He played for them back in 2019. All right. Staying with the NFL, heading out to your neck of the woods, Arizona, where new Cardinals quarterback Joshua Dobbs got a big win against the Cowboys over the weekend. And then he took a humbling loss, Sarah. Yeah. The humbling loss was not on the field. He led the Cardinals, as you mentioned, to their first win of the season over the Cowboys on Sunday. But of all places to be humbled in the Cardinals team shop. How about that? Dobbs posted a TikTok over the weekend that his since gone viral of him trying and failing to buy his own jersey to give to his family. I know. I know. The video that he posted shows Dobbs toggling through the options on a screen at the team store. Then I go, select from roster, okay? Guess what? Your boy is nowhere to be found. You have all the numbers and no number nine. Like, yo, I know I just got here, but at least, come on, we can at least have the custom jersey ready for me. Man. Where's number nine? I know. I know. I think the team was maybe just waiting for him to deliver a win first, I don't know. But the Cardinals were quick to fix the issue. He posted a follow-up TikTok with a Dobbs jersey in hand. And he asked his followers to please take it easy on the Cardinals as he only got to town about a month ago. He's right. It's been a month since they traded for him. But Dobbs has already proven to be a solid, reliable addition at quarterback as he stands in for Kyler Murray. On Sunday against the Cowboys, the career backup got his first ever win as an NFL starter, completing 17 of 21 pass attempts for 189 yards, a touchdown, and a big upset. Now through three weeks of the season, Dobbs holds the 10th best QBR in the league, which surprised me. And he's completing 72% of his passes with no interceptions, which not bad for your first month on the job. Not bad for your first month. I sense something in the air. Do you smell? Smells like a quarterback controversy. I'll be interested to see, though, how he and the Cardinals fair in week four against another NFC power, the 49ers. OK, we wrap up today's episode with a slice of life, John. Who among us has not felt pain at the pump lately that, of course, includes heat star Jimmy Butler. He posted about it on Tuesday on social media. Yeah, how relatable, right? I mean, you press the gas station, you see the fill, it hurts a little bit. Here's Butler's reaction, though, after he put $145 into his tank. This is high-rate rubbery. Are you thinking about going there and telling them that I put the wrong gas in here to give me a refund? This is crazy. I'm going electric. Going electric, I get it, but it's also Jimmy Butler, right? So you might be thinking, wait a minute, $145 is a lot for regular people, but Jimmy Butler, not regular people. He is, after all, a multi-millionaire NBA superstar, and he likes to have a joke now and then. So here's the payoff. You all believe it costs $145 to fill up a Bugatti? Like, this is crazy, haven't you filmed me? There you go, on the herd of, man, Bugatti's man. He says, Bugatti, he turns and looks at the camera with that trademark Butler's smirk, and I personally cannot believe he recorded the entire thing with his tongue planted so firmly in his cheek, but that's Jimmy Butler's for you, Sarah. Yeah, that was absolutely brilliant, delivery, and by the way, I just want to say I do feel his pain I really do. Just imagine, John, how much the fuel costs for my private debt, okay? Sure. So I get it. That's Sarah Kazzell money. That's right. Get on my level, Jimmy Butler. Mm-hmm. All right, that's it for us today. From Wondery, I'm Sarah Kazzell. And I'm John Gonzalez.
