But oilers make a big statement early to even the score against the Golden Knights. The Warriors Dynasty survives an elimination game in the Bay. And the Yankees are showing signs of getting right just ahead of a huge showdown with the Rays. From Wondery, I'm Tiff Oshinsky. And I am Matt Straub. It's Thursday, May 11th. And this is starting five sports stories to start your day. We're starting things off today in the Stanley Cup playoffs where the Oilers won Game 4 over the Golden Knights 4-1 to even things up in that series at two games each. Tiff, as you may recall, the Oilers dropped Game 3 5-1 at home on Monday. And they came out on Wednesday looking like a team that was not pleased whatsoever about that result. They essentially put this game away with three goals in the first period, including this one from Mattias at home to make it 3-0 Edmonton. Not only was that at home's first goal of these playoffs, it was actually his first playoff goal in five years. And Leon Drysidal got an assist on that goal. He still leads all players and points in the playoffs. But a bigger trend here for Edmonton as much as they've dominated on the power play. And we've talked about that extensively on this show in recent weeks. They've actually had some trouble in five-on-five situations in this series against the Golden Knights. Prior to Wednesday night, they'd been outscored 10-4 in those situations. But it was a different story in Game 4 as they scored three of their four goals playing five-on-five. And one more note on Edmonton. Maybe we should have seen the Oilers bounce back coming. They haven't lost back-to-back games since late February. So as you said, Tiff, we are all even with Game 5 in Vegas on Friday. Elsewhere in the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Maple Leafs fought off elimination by beating the Panthers in Florida 2-1 in Game 4 on Wednesday. Dranto now heads back home down three games to one for Game 5 on Friday. All right, before we get to the NBA playoffs, we're going to stop off in the NFL. We have heard a whole lot about Aaron Rodgers this offseason, but we've heard way less about the guy replacing him in Green Bay, Jordan Love. And on Wednesday, we actually got to hear from the Packers' new QB1 himself. That's right, Matt. The media and I'm sure Packers fans have been waiting to hear what Jordan Love had to say about the whole Rodgers being traded to the Jets situation. And on Wednesday, we finally got our answer. And overall, he was very positive about his relationship with Rodgers. Love actually said on Wednesday that he spoke to Rodgers after he was traded and talked about what was said on that call. It's kind of just wish you the best, you know, going forward. He wish me the best and, you know, always there for me if I need anything. But I'm always just grateful to be around him and for the time I had with him to be able to learn and be behind him. It's very grateful for me. Love had three seasons to learn behind Rodgers. The same length of time, Rodgers had to wait for the starting role behind Brett Favre. And while Love didn't expect to start right away, even though the Packers moved up to the 26th pick to draft him in 2020, he did say the three-year $150 million extension Rodgers signed last season made him question his role with the team. I mean, I think the hardest time was when he re-signed the contract last year. It was kind of like, okay, well, where do we go from here? What do I do? And I think I, you know, sat back, kind of thought to myself and just came back with their approach, like, just go ball out and grow and try and become the best version myself. And I can't really control what happens after that. Now, Love never complained, at least publicly, and put in the work behind the scenes to earn the QB1 title. Obviously, the big question here is, will Jordan Love be ready? During his three years as Rodgers back up, he only started one game, a loss to Kansas City, but it's Kansas City. And in 10 total appearances, he threw for 660 yards with three touchdowns and three picks. Love signed a one-year contract extension earlier this month to keep him under contract through 2024. So we'll see if he can establish himself as the long-term answer in Green Bay. For what it's worth, Vegas has the Packers with the longest odds to win the NFC North this year of any team in the division. Wow. Yeah, going to be a fascinating year in that division. And elsewhere in the NFL on Wednesday, free agent tight end Foster Moreau is set to sign a three-year deal with the Saints. Moreau reportedly plans to play this season after the 26-year-old was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma back in March. Now as promised, we are headed back to the NBA where the Warriors staved off elimination in game five against the Lakers beating LA at the Chase Center 121-106 on Wednesday. Yeah, the Warriors put all five starters and double figures in this one, including a game high 27 from Steph Curry. But another guy who really stood out in watching this game was Andrew Wiggins. After having so many great moments during the Warriors run to the title last season, he had a really strong performance on Wednesday and he put some punctuation on a big run for the Warriors with a tip dunk early in the third quarter. Now they're late return over Green. Here they mentioned the Lakers looking listless. That was the capper on a 25-7 run for the Warriors that took this game from a 54-54 tie to a 79-61 Warriors lead. And Golden State was mostly in control after that. Wiggins finished with 25 points. This highest scoring game in these playoffs while the Warriors also got a rare big scoring night from Dremon Green who poured in 20. The Lakers, meanwhile, were led by 25 from LeBron James and 23 from Anthony Davis. But Davis did leave the game late after taking a shot to the head. So that's an injury situation to watch as we head back to LA for game six on Friday. Meanwhile, the Knicks also kept their season alive with a win at home in game five. Jalen Brunson played all 48 minutes in port and 38 points in the win. And Chris Paul has been ruled out of game six in the Nuggets' sun series due to his groin injury as the Suns try to extend their season in game six tonight, Thursday. Let's move to Major League Baseball where the Yankees, despite a winning record, have been trying to dig themselves out of the ALE's basement. And along those lines, they beat the AAs 11-3 on Wednesday, earning their first series sweep of the season. That's right, Matt. Before the series against the AAs, the Yankees won only five out of their last 14 games. Then in this three game series, the bats showed up and they dominated scoring 28 runs to Oakland's 10. And during Wednesday's route, Yankees rookie shortstop Anthony Volby capped off a seven run fifth inning by hitting his first career grand slam. At just 22 years and 12 days Volby became the youngest Yankee to ever hit a grand slam at Yankee Stadium. Now I know it's the Almighty Yankees, Matt, but they really needed this. Yankees have not been great in the Bronx in large part because they've suffered so many injuries. Starting pitchers Carlos Rodon and Luis Severino have yet to throw a pitch this season while Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, among other position players, has spent time on the IL. Judge is now back. He went through for four on Wednesday and Luis Severino is also close to returning from a right-lat strain. So things are trending in the right direction. The A's will do that for you, but we'll see if the Yankees can continue this positive momentum as they host the best team in baseball, the Tampa Bay Rays, for a huge four game series starting today, Thursday. I've heard. So some are saying the Rays are off to a good start. And elsewhere in Major League Baseball, the Miami Marlins are calling up their top prospect Yuri Perez from double A Pensacola. The six foot eight flame drawing right-hander is the number 10 overall prospect in baseball and he will make his debut on Friday against the Reds, becoming the Marlins youngest pitcher in franchise history at just 20 years, 27 days old. The previous youngest was the late Jose Fernandez in 2013. We're closing things out today in the Champions League where we saw an all Milan semi-final on Wednesday between Inter and AC Milan with Inter taking the first leg to nil. The tip there is a ton of shared history here. This was their 236th all time match up and there's also a shared stadium. The San Siro Milan was the home side on Wednesday, but it was a decision by the visitors Inter that made a massive impact on this match. That decision was manager Simone and Zagi, hoping to go with 37 year old Ed and Jekyll at striker over Ramlulu Kaku. And the manager's choice was validated pretty quickly as Jekyll scored on a tremendous left footed volley off a corner in the eighth minute. Can Cholano Lu curled in towards the sixth! SICKLE! SICKLY STUDDING from the Bosnian! A goal worthy of the moment! Pays off handsomely! So a strong start for the visitors, again, the term we're using loosely here. They were not done when it came to early scoring. In fact, they put in a second goal just three minutes later, courtesy of Henrik McEtarian. There's DiMatico sneaking it behind. Aren't by Calabria squared in for Lottado? Leave this for McEtarian! A goal! It's a dream start for Inter! One-way traffic in San Siro! Hearing the stadium name on that call, I feel compelled to mention one last time that these two teams share a stadium just for the record. And what an atmosphere there as Inter is off to a strong start in this semi-final showdown and they now get to play at home, so to speak, with a two goal lead in the exact same stadium for the second leg of this semi-final next Tuesday. Inter are looking to become the first Italian team to win the European Cup since they did it in their treble-winning 2010 season under a guy by the name of Jose Mourinho. And on that note, we are out of here from Wondery, I'm Tifoshinsky. And I am Matt Strop. Thanks for listening. Hey, prime members, you can listen to the lead starting five ad-free on Amazon Music.
