Toa and the Dolphins get a dramatic comeback win in Los Angeles. Jogavitch and Gough both make history at the U.S. Open. And after a last second game winner, on the last day of the season, the WNBA playoff field is set. From Wondery, I'm Sarah Cazell. But I'm John Gonzalez. It's Monday, September 11th, and this is starting 5. What stories do you need to start your day? Okay. We begin today's episode with the NFL, and right away, week one, we were treated to a back-and-forth battle between two AFC playoff contenders that came right down to the wire, with the Dolphins coming from behind to beat the chargers on the road, 36, 34. Yeah. The game, Sarah, provided you aren't a chargers fan, of course, but fight for the rest of us. The chargers had a four-point lead with under four minutes to go, but that was plenty of time for a Miami offense that was cooking on Sunday. The Dolphins drove down the field and then got into the end zone when Tuatunga Violoa found to re-kill for this touchdown, with one minute and 45 seconds left in the game. And the gov to the end zone and put the touchdown, touchdown, the Dolphins have re-cups through the lead. What a day for Tuatunga Violoa, 466 yards and his third touchdown of the day. That was the second touchdown for Hill, who had 11 catches 4215 yards, both of which were game highs. But as you heard there, Sarah, Tuatunga went for 466 yards and three touchdowns. An absolute monster outing for him. That's the fourth most passing yards in a season opener in NFL history. Here's Hill after the game, pumping up his quarterback. Bro, Tuatunga's a baller, bro. I've been saying this since last year, you know, I've been an advocate, you know, for him. And like, he definitely showed it today. And even on the side line with me, he's like, hey, Cheetah, let's get it, baby. Big time moment, big time players, maybe big time plays. So he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, who is a baller, bro, bro, big road win for two in the dolphins. As for the chargers, the last time we saw them before Sunday, they were busy blowing a 27 point lead in the playoffs and a loss to the Jags. That was the third biggest collapse in postseason history. I hate to bring up old wounds. Sunday wasn't quite that bad. But evidently, the chargers still got a charge. Yeah. Whenever you're ready to join us in the season chargers, whenever you're ready, we're waiting. Take your time. Yeah. I mean, the big AFC matchup on Sunday, the Browns, throttled the Bengals in Cleveland, 24 to three. It got so bad for Sinsie, John that Joe borough who is now the highest paid player in NFL history after signing his new contract extension. He didn't even finish out the game after throwing for a career low 82 yards. What a rough start for the Bengals. A lot of money for three points. Mm-hmm. All right, not a college football. Michigan State announced on Sunday that its head football coach, Mel Tucker, has been suspended without pay as the university continues to investigate sexual harassment accusations being made against him. Yeah, John, the investigation is not new to the university, but the allegations made against Tucker became public Saturday night, seemingly leading to his suspension on Sunday. For a report by USA Today, Tucker is accused of sexually harassing Brenda Tracy, who is a prominent sexual assault prevention advocate. She travels the country to educate athletes about sexual violence and consent. Now USA Today reports that Tucker invited Tracy to Michigan State to speak to the football program in August of 2021 and April of 2022. And according to a complaint Tracy filed with Michigan State's Title IX office, when Tracy was on campus in April of 2022, Tucker repeatedly asked her to meet with him alone and even suggested sneaking into her hotel through a back door so that nobody would spot him. Later that month, again, this is April of 2022, according to Tracy's complaint, Tucker masturbated without her consent when they were on a phone call. His complaint also mentions Tucker sending her gifts and him asking if she would date him if he were not married. Now Mel Tucker acknowledged in a letter to Title IX investigators that he did indeed masturbate on that phone call, but he claims it was consensual phone sex and says Tracy has misrepresented a quote mutually consensual and intimate relationship. She reportedly told investigators that she did not reciprocate Tucker's interest in her. On Sunday into a Michigan State President Theresa Woodruff held a press conference alongside Michigan State AD Alan Haller and she said she fully supports Haller's decision to suspend Mel Tucker. The action AD Haller took comes with the full weight of my support. As he shared, these new developments before the former hearing can impact the case and the community. These actions are not taken lightly. And I know AD Haller is making them in support of the interests of the individuals impacted. The formal hearing that she mentions is scheduled to take place October 5th and 6th, which is during Michigan State's buy week. And there they will determine whether Tucker violated school policy. Tucker signed a fully guaranteed 10 year 95 million dollar contract in November of 2021, making him one of the highest paid coaches in the sport. Obviously, things a lot more important than football happening here. But in terms of football, Michigan State secondary coach, Harlan Barnett is taking over as the interim coach and former Michigan State coach, Mark Dentonio, who retired after the 2019 season is coming back as an associate head coach. Turning now to tennis, the US Open wrapped up this weekend with men's world number one and no back joke, which making history on Sunday and Coco Gough making some history of her own on Saturday. Yeah, good weekend for both of them. We'll start with Joker, Sarah. He made quick work of 3C, Daniel Medvedev on Sunday dispatching him 6376663 to win his 24th Grand Slam title. That makes him the first person in the open era on the men's or women's side to win that many. The 36 year old celebrated by Donning a Mamba mentality t-shirt that featured his face along with Kobe Bryant's and the number 24, which was Kobe's number, and now also represents the number of major titles Joker has. Sure, here's Joker after his latest big win. I never imagined that I would be here standing with you talking about 24 slams. I never thought that would be the reality, but you know, last couple of years I felt I have a chance, I have a shot at a history and why not grab it if it's presented. All right, so Joker wins his 24th the day before on Saturday, Coco Gough won her first major title after dropping the first set against world number one, Marina Sabelinka. Gough came back to win to 63662. And now here's Coco on the mic afterward with an epic speech. I want to say honestly, thank you to the people who didn't believe in me. Honestly, to those who thought we were putting water on my fire, you were really adding gas to it. And now I'm really burning so bright right now. She is, in fact, really burning so bright right now. I loved that speech. Sorry, she also put her dad in the spotlight and said Sunday was the first time she'd ever seen him cry, which was great because of course the camera was on him while she said it. And he was trying to wave it off, which was hilarious. But what a moment for the 19 year old and her family. Oh, that was so good and she called him out too. She said he thinks he's so hard, but he's not amazing, amazing line there by Coco. Adds and daughters. Yes. Absolutely. One more US open note, Dita DeGroote also made history on Sunday, or rather, she continued making history when she won her 12th straight Grand Slam wheelchair singles title. That is her third straight calendar year, Grand Slam. All right, now to basketball and incredibly busy Sunday, also included the final day of the WNBA regular season and the race for the top playoff seed really went down to the wire here, Sarah. It did, John. And it was awesome. The Liberty were hosting the mistakes on Sunday with the Liberty and the Aces vying for the number one seed. So with a New York win plus a Las Vegas loss, the Liberty could have leapfrogged the Aces to grab that top spot and home court advantage throughout the post season. But with 0.5 seconds left and a tie game between the Liberty and the Mystics, Washington's Brittany Sykes said, Psych gets it up to Sykes gets it touching Brittany Sykes at the buzzer. They're going to look at it to see if it got out of her hands, but what a play from Eric Tibo in the Mystics, if this counts. Okay, spoiler alert, guys. It counted. It's caught an inbound lob pass from Natasha Cloud and got it off just as time ran out giving the Mystics the 90 88 win, which put a stop to an eight game winning streak for New York and handed the Las Vegas Aces the one seed right as they were stepping onto the court against the Mercury. So the playoff picture is now set. We've got four best of three series starting this week. The defending champion Aces will face off against the eight seed Chicago sky. The Liberty will also get a chance for some quick revenge as they are facing the Mystics who secured the seven seed and to round it out, we have the three seed Connecticut son playing the six seed Minnesota links and the four seed Dallas Wings playing the five seed Atlanta dream. Man, what a regular season that W had. I mean, you know, all those records that were broken, you have the number one seed race coming down to the final day can't wait to see what happens in the postseason, which by the way, first round of the playoffs get underway on Wednesday with the links taking on the sun. And as you mentioned, the sky facing the Aces. All right, we wrap up today's episode with baseball and a rollercoaster of a day for the New York Yankees who somehow beat the Brewers in the Bronx on Sunday for three in extra. Yeah, weird day for the Yankees, Sarah. They were getting no hit after 10 full innings before finally getting their first hit with one out in the bottom of the 11th. After that, Giancarlo Stanton hit a tying two run homer in the 12th and then in the bottom of the 13th, the Yankees walked it off with this game winning double from Kyle Hagashioca. Three, two, drill to left building deep, going back as Taylor, Thomas Head and the Yankees will win the game, every cent per hour scores, it's a walkoff hit for Hagashioca and the wildest, strangest Sunday afternoon, the Yankees go for being no hit for 10 and a third in nings to walking off with a victory. That was his first walkoff hit in the major, Sarah, crazy day to get it. Yeah, no kidding, a truly up and down day for the Yankees as it holds on after the win. This broke that their top prospect, rookie Jason Dominguez, has a torn right UCL and might need Tommy John surgery. So they have this crazy walkoff and they don't even really get to enjoy it for very long, which honestly just really wraps up the season for the Bronx Bombers, doesn't it? It sure does. Yeah.
