It's 70 points with the Sanders extra points, 70 to 20, looks like a Miami heat score.
Mike McDaniel in the Dolphins office put an all time beat down on the Broncos.
The Cowboys hype train goes right off the rails after a shocking loss in the desert.
And with one final flourish, another US women's national team legend says goodbye.
From Wondery, I'm Tiffany Oshinsky and I'm John Gonzalez.
It's Monday, September 25th and this is starting five, five sports stories to start your day.
We begin today's episode with a wild day in the NFL so much to discuss from Sunday's
action.
John, including a scoreboard breaking outing from the Dolphins in their 70 to 20 win over
the Broncos in Miami.
Yeah, everybody buckle in 70 points, Jeff.
That's the first time an NFL team has scored that many since 1966.
The Dolphins put up 726 yards of total offense.
That's the second most in NFL history.
Only the 1951 Rams had more in a single game and who can forget that team seriously.
Miami is only the fourth team ever to score 10 touchdowns and that includes the playoffs.
So we're going to play all 10 touchdowns for you right now.
Just kidding.
This is starting five, not starting 10.
But we do have a fun one for you.
Here's to a tongue of ILO who completed just 23 of his 26 passes for 309 yards, finding
Devon a chain on a no look pass and a one for a touchdown.
If it's second down and go, look at that double pass agent, big attack on dives for six.
Splashing his way for a Miami touchdown.
That was one of four touchdown passes for Tula.
And Jeff, it was one of two touchdown receptions for A-chain who also had 18 carries for 203
rushing yards and two more rushing touchdowns.
None of these numbers sound real.
So not surprisingly, this one got out of hand early and Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel eventually
took out his starters.
It didn't matter though, because Miami kept scoring.
Here's A-chain again with the final touchdown to set a franchise record for points.
A-chain big hole turns it out accelerating.
You can kiss him goodbye 69 points on the 67 yard touchdown run by A-chain.
His second rushing touchdown and his fourth to the extra point made its 70 points.
The Dolphins are now three and O and they look absolutely for real.
As for the Broncos, they're O and three and the less said about them, the better.
I suspect Sean Payton goes into witness protection after this one and we never see him again.
In other, less eye-popping, blowout news from Sunday.
The bills smack the commanders 37-3 to hand Washington its first loss of the season, while
the chiefs offense got back on track with a 41-10 win over the Bears.
With Taylor Swift in the house, seated next to Mama Kelsey, no less.
So much happens Sunday that we're just presenting that little tidbit and moving on.
Just skipping right over Taylor and Travis Kelsey.
All right, more NFL from Sunday to Dallas Cowboys started out this season to know they looked
really good and then on Sunday they looked really bad against the lowly cardinals in a game
that Arizona won at home, 28-16 to.
Yeah, John, coming into this one, the Cowboys were heavily favored to be the O and two
cardinals after outscoring the Jets and Giants by a combined 60 points.
Instead, Journey Man, Cubie, Josh Dobbs and the cards went into the half up 21-10 after
a 62-yard field goal by Matt Prader.
Now, Arizona also led at the half in the first two games of the season only to lose.
So when the Cowboys scored six unanswered points in the second half, you can bet cards
fans that, well, here we go again.
But it was Dobbs who came up clutch, hitting Rookie Michael Wilson on a key deep pass late
in the fourth quarter.
Joshua Dobbs sets the shoulders, steps into the throw and going coverage.
Michael Wilson would man to be swarvin' around him inside the 10.
The Rookie's biggest play in the NFL goes for 59.
And there Dobbs has to touch down pass to Marquis Brown to give the Cardinals a 28-16 lead.
And then Arizona sealed the win when Dak Prescott did this on third and goal.
Prescott, looking in zone, that one's picked up.
It's Kaiser White.
Dak Prescott's first interception of the season.
The Cardinals slam the door at the goal line, Kaiser.
Rough one for Dak who completed 25-40 passes for just 249 yards and one touchdown in a rough
loss for Dallas.
Can we say that one more time?
Rough loss.
Meanwhile, Josh Dobbs finished 17-21 for 189 yards in a touchdown while earning his first
win as a starting quarterback.
Jonathan Ganon also recorded his first win as head coach for the Cardinals.
Yeah, they gave him the Gatorade show or after that, but sure.
All right, speaking of first wins, Demiko Ryan's got his first WS head coach of the Houston
Texans, getting past the Jacksonville Jaguars, 37-17, and the process, Rookie quarterback
CJ Stroud made a little history.
He's the first quarterback ever to have at least 900 passing yards for passing touchdowns
and no interceptions in his first three career starts.
Okay, for our last NFL story today, two oh and two teams met on Sunday with the chargers
taking on the Vikings, and it was Los Angeles somehow leaving Minnesota with a 20-24 win in
a game that went right down to the wire with two big moments late in the game.
Oh, sure did.
As you mentioned, two big moments at the end, so we're going to skip right to the end.
Set the scene for you here.
Chargers were up by four.
It's fourth and one at their own 24-yard line, under two minutes left, Vikings out of
time-outs.
So you got a punt there, right?
Oh, no.
Not if you are Los Angeles head coach and amateur riverboat gambler Brandon Staley.
He decided to go for it, and here's how that went.
They are going to go to give up the middle, and he's not going to get there.
They go on the ground with Joshua Kelly.
The chargers go on fourth and one from their own 24, and they fail.
In this place.
Huge heites tip.
Gave the Vikings the ball with a super short field down four points, a minute and 47 seconds
left plenty of time, right?
Not that far to go.
Feels like a home victory, except if how easily we are all fooled.
With time winding down, here's Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins going for the end zone
in the win.
12 seconds when Cousins gets the snap.
Steps up throws for the end zone to flip dead, and he intercepted Kenneth Murray.
After the double deflection ends up with the football and extinguishes the Vikings hopes.
Wow, huge interception.
Murray totally bails out Brandon Staley.
I think Staley has to get him a gift pass, get maybe a thank you card as well.
Also in that game, Justin Herbert had 405 passing yards and three touchdowns for Los
Angeles.
While Keenan Allen caught 18 passes to set a single game team record, Alan also racked
up 215 receiving yards, making him the first charger ever to have at least 15 catches
and 200 yards in a game.
And oh yeah, Alan threw a 49 yard touchdown in the game as well because the NFL was completely
drunk on Sunday.
As for the Vikings, the defending NFC North champs, Wamp Wamp, they are now 0 and 3.
So brutal stuff for them, but man, that day of NFL action wiped me out, Tim, I'm still
recovering.
Oh, well, just you wait, John, because there's more.
There's more.
There is more.
The Packers beat the Saints in New Orleans, missed a feel goal at the end of the game.
That marks the 11th straight year that the Packers have won their home opener.
And John were only now finally mentioning that the Colton back up quarterback Gardner
Menshu knocked off the Ravens in overtime in Baltimore.
Wow.
That's how bananas Sunday was in the NFL.
All right, enough football finally turning to the WNBA playoffs.
It was game one of the semifinals on Sunday in Brooklyn and the Connecticut Sun did something
they hadn't done all season tough.
They beat the New York Liberty.
That's right, John.
These two teams faced off four times during the regular season and the Sun lost all four
games, including two blowouts.
But it's the playoffs, anything can happen.
Yes.
And this time in the opening game of their best of five semifinal series, it was the sun's
turn to blow at the Liberty winning 78 to 63.
Now, it wasn't always looking like a sun route.
New York was up by three at the half, but that's when Connecticut took over going on a 16
and two run to start the third quarter.
And they did not look back from there.
Our foreword to Wana Bonner let the sun with 20 points, including this shot at the
buzzer in the third to make it 65 to 55.
Bonner, one second left, Bonner, fading edge hitting at the buzzer to Wana Bonner knocks
it down.
And the Connecticut Sun take a 10 point lead into the fourth quarter.
Bonner did keep it going in the fourth, scoring the sun's next seven points to give them
a 16 point lead, the largest of the game.
But Bonner wasn't just dominant offensively.
She led her team with three blocks and had seven rebounds as part of an incredible defensive
effort by the sun.
They held the league's second best scoring team to just eight points in the fourth quarter.
Five time all star in MVP front runner, Brianna Stewart made zero threes and went seven
for 25 from the field, struggling to score over the sun's MVP candidate, Alyssa Thomas.
So we'll see what adjustments are made as the Eastern Conference semis continue on Tuesday,
so in New York.
Look at that.
Couldn't beat them in the regular season.
Boom.
Out to a one nothing lead in the playoffs.
Nice start for the sun.
And then in the Western Conference, the top seed Las Vegas Aces did what we expected.
They beat the Dallas wings 97 to 83 in the first game of that series.
Game two there will also be Tuesday night in Vegas.
All right, we wrap up today's episode with a farewell to a legend.
Arguably the best soccer player in American history called it a career on Sunday with Megan
Rapinoe walking off the pitch for the final time in a two-no win for the US women's national
team over South Africa and a friendly at Soldier Field in Chicago, John.
Yeah, end of an error to last week.
Julie Erts said goodbye and now another US women's national team superstar is hanging
up her boots.
What a way to go out though.
Rapinoe treated us to one last memorable moment when she delivered a gorgeous corner kick
that eventually found Emily Sonnet for the American second goal of the night.
Rapinoe ball driven in, blood body punches away, Sunday with a hitter and it's two-no.
Emily Sonnet with a goal and she will celebrate with Megan Rapinoe who delivered the corner
that caused the problems.
Rapinoe ends her national team career with 63 goals, 73 assists and 203 caps.
63 players had longer careers for the national team and of course she was part of the golden
era the one back-to-back World Cups.
Here she is coming off the pitch for good.
Megan Rapinoe's number goes up on the board and a global icon exits the international
stage for one final time.
She's changed this team, she's changed this game, she's changed women's sport forever.
We mentioned her on-field accomplishments but as you heard, she's global icon, not
just for her on-field accomplishments but also for her outspoken activism on just so
many fronts so she'll be missed for countless reasons.
We salute her to what a career.
Yeah, I'm going to miss watching her on the pitch for sure.
Now that's it for us today.
